What about gluing a piece of thin rubber matting where the water drops at the bend, that will stop the noise, and its much easier and cheaper

The problem with this option is find a rubber matting that does not deteriorate. Also, a glue that does not deteriorate. It is also quite hard to install the matting at the right place of the joint. And lastly, if the rubber matting dislodges, it will block the downpipe - creating other problems. It is always better to spend the money to do a job properly.

@@roofingportal very true, you could even use a layer of silicone. Anything which affects the acoustics will help. Eventually everything deteriorates even the downpipes themselves.
