I have 3 extractor fans for removing steam; laundry and bathrooms. I also have 2 whirlybirds. The extractor fans supply air to the roof attic (whether they are turned on or not) so in effect they ARE air inlets.

The housing crisis is caused by immigration and it’s being done deliberately. Sure there’s this and that minor thing here and there that you can point to but they’re just agitating the fire that’s fueled by immigration. Sky high record immigration. It’s that simple.

Wise words from a responsible contractor. I was a builder for nearly 50 years retiring at 72. I started at the bottom doing small jobs gradually taking on bigger jobs, building a regular clientele, completing contracts over $1000000 and accepting responsibility for everything I did. I never advertised and did repeat work for many clients including well known people. I supervised every project and never took on more work than my crew could handle and so the buck stopped with me. You just have to go a bit further than is required and not do the job as quick as you can and get out, which seems to be the way of the building industry more and more. I wish you all the best and keep up the good work. Your approach is what provides you with continuous work and gives you many happy clients.

We put whirly birds and gable vents in our new build over 25 yrs ago by choice and 2.7m verandah all way round, i can tell you that in an area with 40+ summers people are surprised when they come inside and after commenting its nice to be in AC that we had no AC just interior design of open plan in cross shape that allows cross flow at night the closed up during day and the roof cavity not building heat, no ceiling insulation either just sisilation under roof sheets

In the old days of building construction, every cornice corners has vent with flywire to have warm air flow into the roof from ceiling plus brick vents just below roof line and its works well without air conditioning, sadly it's has changed for the worst by concealing the whole roof. The only problem is that you loose a lot of warmth in winter and a simple solution is to create some kind of shutter on willybirds and wall vents. Comments on sarkings by cutting a hole for vent is a big no no, you have huge condensation running down onto ceiling and you may say the same for willy birds, but willy birds are based near the ridge at high point of the roof..

In my house in north brisbane, there is whirlybird but no ceiling inlet vent. But it still make a cooling job. the air inlet comes out by way from the ceiling vent fan installations. 2 in the bathroom, 1 at the laundry and 1 in the kitchen. this is better here in queensland because of hot weather since it takes away warm air inside the room while sucking the hot air at the ceiling at the same time. Also, the roof area inside the ceiling is not 100% air tight construction, therefore air can get in wherever there is a gap. Try to look inside your ceiling through a manhole and you can see light from the outside.

You don't need eve vents your bathroom has an exhaust fan direct into the roof. Plus the roof is not air tight.

Yes they work. End of. Our neighbours either side don't have the convection fans, their air-con runs every day the temperature exceeds 25C. We have2 on our house and have used the air-con perhaps 6 times in 8 years. Granted, we've been going through a lengthy cooler period in tha time but even days 35+ we don't need to switch it on. Standard 8' ceilings, steel frame, gable roof, brick veneer.
@davidstephenson36157 күн бұрын
Hot air expands - it takes up more volume than cold. And then it goes out the vent. You do NOT need an air intake for these to work. It can help, but that is not how physics works. The heated and expanded air remaining within the roof cavity has less mass, density and conductivity - less thermal energy - less ability to make the house hot. I am trying to explain in layman's terms. Alternatively, just look at all the whirlybird installations that WORK WITHOUT INLET VENTS. Measure the difference. You can do that easily by stopping the birds spinning for a day.
@2394Joseph7 күн бұрын
I had always thought of using the warm air that forms in the roof space in winter sunshine, to warm the house. Wouldn't be hard to install a reverse fan in the ceiling. Is there such a system available?
@roofingportal7 күн бұрын
I would not recommend this. I have looked into so many roof attic spaces and the dust up there is better vented out of the house. You would not want that dust blowing back into your living space...
@tomcat75258 күн бұрын
Can someone explain why so many new houses have a dark grey or black coloured roof, surely its not energy efficient?
@roofingportal7 күн бұрын
It is a trade off. Dark roofs attract less condensation under the roof - so it is better for condensation. Dark roofs do soak up more heat, so ceiling insulation has to work harder to maintain temperature in the living areas. The rule of thumb should be: Dark roofs for the cold, temperate areas of Australia. White roof for the warmer areas.

G'day, How would this change impact Bush fire ratings? What would you have to add to prevent embers entering the roof cavity?
@kussemeinkont8 күн бұрын
On a hot day the more roof ventilation the better. I live in SA and we don't suffer from condensation, the heat build up in the roof space is the problem.
@urbsimp52738 күн бұрын
As a building designer that has to deal with this B/S everyday this is a simple solution that should be investigated further. We need to prove compliance through an alternative solution to the NCC showing that enough air volume moves through the roof to meet their current requirements and that the condensation is NOT going to create another issue. It’s becoming insane the amount of compliance requirements now needed to fix problems that have been legislatively created. Solutions like this stop adding more and more money to the builds, like adding whirlybirds and eave vents, hopefully allowing us to start controlling the outrageous cost of building.

Sounds like a job for bitumen impregnated foam around the bracket? On our solar brackets the installers grinded away the underside of the overhanging tile(concrete) to reduce the gap distance. I've checked for leaks in heavy (really heavy) rain from inside the roof space (we have no sarking) and there are none at this stage. But it sounds like it might be a good idea to stuff the gap from the inside to stop any uphill capillary flow.

Depends on what your roof is. If it is metal well, you have ample air flow and do not need eve vents.

The building blanket doesn't stop condensation from forming, and the reason why it's supposed to go into the gutter is so condensation can drip into the gutter. By cutting the blanket short like that, it just means that condensation drips into the roof cavity.

Yeah..cannot believe that this guy is suggesting to cut the blanket short of the gutter,goes against every recommended installation guide i've ever seen.. Try run that through a commercial certifier and you will find yourself ripping up deck to patch your mistakes... Fascia vent with a gutter flashing (detail similar to B/G) and you are sweet for eveless ventilation..only going to add a few hundred bucks to the job and its done correctly! The literature on this is so bloody straightforward i cannot believe someone would take their time to try find a loophole around it..

If the roof isn't steep enough, and I have never done the maths, condensation between the blanket and the ton will sit in the sag of the blanket. There are alot of houses with part flattish roofs.

Had a heat problem in roof on my old 1979 Perth house (poor insulation). We installed whirly birds in 2014 and it lowered the house temperature by 5-10C on hot days. it lowered the attic temperature by considerably more. The reason it worked is because the air was coming in from under the back verandah (facing south, away from sun) and then up into roof, then out the whirlybird. But I was well aware of the air replacement issue (I am a physics teacher) and the roofer understood the problem. The reason I did not get insulation at the time was cost. We simply didn't have the money for new insulation at the time.
@garyradley569412 күн бұрын
I have had a whirlybird installed for over 20 years and it makes a big difference to the interior comfort of my home over summer BECAUSE I have made two very important improvements. One, I have a piece of core flex that I slip under the whirlybird over winter so the heat does not escape, and two, the eave vents I have used are central heating floor vents that I can open in summer and close in winter using the end of a broom. As soon as I make it operational at the beginning of summer the need to use air conditioners is greatly reduced and as I live right on the coast I can normally just use the cool breeze I get after 4pm to cool down the home.

Hi - other than the main issue of how it is safely anchored, modern roofs donot seem to be designed to be able to support additional loads. My home for example was built late 50's and is a mixture of 4x6 and 4x2 hardwood I had the roof cleaned 2 years ago, and the contractor was suprised that he was able to have 3 people on the roof and there was no sagging, he mentioned many new homes ( say mid 80's onwards ) have a slight say with one more than average weight person - thus he typically has 2 people one left one right side or front / back Most homes with concrete / clay roof tiles would develop cracks and it will take a wile to find the water leak in your home as most times it would soak into the insulation (if fitted )
