Even though I travel for many years, I still cannot accept the modern nonsense approach to motorcycle trips. In the next few minutes, I will list some of the questions that I have and unlogical decisions that I have seen and cannot understand and I really hope that you will give me some answers and eventually help me to open my eyes.

I travelled around Australia for 128 days. If I had stayed in motels at $110 a night and bought food in roadhouses or cheap restaurants at $35 a day it would have cost $18560 plus all the other expenses. I camped and cooked my own food and the whole trip including fuel and tours and tyres and a new chain cost me $8000. And camping under the stars by a billabong and watching the sun go down beats a motel room most times. On the 1500 km through the outback from one point of interest to the next I sure appreciated my cruise control. Your points of view are valid and it's great that you are so committed to them but the wonderous thing about humans is that we are not all the same.

I like you so much. You are the one who asks the right questions and who makes logical statements. I am not a great motorcycle rider and I sold a BMW 1200 GS to ride today on a Honda Dominator 650. It’s much more fun, the bike is lighter, have a better handling even if he is 20 years old and have no electronic and no ABS. I love it. I am an absolute fan of your videos and I like the way you talk. Please continue this way … and be safe ! Thankfully yours … PS : I forget to say that I am 71 !

I can answer the question about going on a trip if you have problems at home. Some problems are chronic, it doesn't matter what you do they will still be there. For example,caring for family members with chronic illnesses doesn't go away. If you get a chance for a break then you need to take it just for a chance to rest. It makes sense to take opportunities to look after yourself to enable you just to keep going.

I think it is fine to have a narrow point of view like this and surely after so many years your viewers will agree with you. But truth is a bit more complicated than this. Reasons why people ride are so diverse, I am 5 seasons in and still finding out why I ride, what I prefer, what I don't. KZbin sold me an idea that 'adventure' riding should be massively long trips, it should be offroad, low comfort, challenging, etc, because that is an ultimate way it will ever be rewarding. What I found out for myself, riding long trips, riding on gravel roads, stressing about that next sand pit which might appear and wash my front wheel again, or ending up in difficult sections where you can do 30km in 5 hours, droping bike, breaking things, it did not make me feel like I am on adventure, it made it feel like a painful chore. I felt I was trying to do something against my own voice of reason, based on opinions I picked up online from others about what motorcycle adventure is supposed to be. Ultimately, I found out I much rather prefer riding open roads, take more time at interesting locations, have a road coverage insurance, not tools. I am a daily rider, I consider motorcycling part of my identiry. For me riding is about being present, relaxing, getting rid of my OCD thoughts, because riding a motorcycle is a really simple task which done well and in balance makes it feel like a meditation. Ever since this outlook I became a lot less judging of others. If I was lets say 50, not 25, when I started riding, and had all this money and no idea why I ride, I would probably also ended up with overpriced machinery on trips which are not for me.

I understand what you are saying, I've been riding for a long time and have had many dual purpose motorcycles, doing long trips including as far north as you can go in North America, very remote parts of Australia, including snow riding and extreme remote solitude. In northern Canada I did not see another vehicle or human for almost one month whilst riding around. On this trip I carried many litres of fuel, and it was heavy, but without it I could not have been where I was. The nearest fuel depot was almost 500 klms away. I don't do this anymore, I've ticked that item on the list. Now my motorcycle is two things, a useful tool as well as a means of brief escape from inner city living. These days on many a weekend I'll head to the hills and maybe do a 200-400 klm day trip, I've very happy with this and will always have a motorcycle because of the flexibility it provides. Who knows, maybe I'll haed of for a longer trip one day again, but it's not on the radar for now. Riding well, at speed, and safe, through the hills still gives me a buzz. As soon as I head for the hills, all luggage comes off the bike. This is a long waffle when all I am saying is that the "why I ride" can change over the years.

Really like this attitude. Sometimes we want the struggle, sometimes we want the flow. Sometimes we just want to park our bikes in front of the cafe and sit in the sun with a coffee and admire how they look. No need to define yourself by one or the other, or judge anyone else.

I was "that guy" when I first started. Blasting along at 120, missing everything. Big expensive bike, big aluminum panniers, etc. One crash and those panniers were ruined, never sealed right again. I was scared to ride it off road because it was so damn heavy. Maybe I was not good enough, but I doubt many people are. Now, 12 years later, I'm on a CRF300L with 21 Brothers soft luggage and hardly any "toys" attached. It's a great bike for travel, it MAKES you take secondary roads lol.

@@mmmddd4366 Fuel stations are everywhere, and if you're in a part of the world they aren't, you plan accordingly or ask a local. You could get spend hundreds of dollars on a bigger tank if you're that concerned, but I prefer the light weight travel personally, with a cheap gas can strapped on if I really need it. My bike goes 230km or so on a tank, and I'm ready to stop after that anyway.

My friend toured in Europe on a sport bike many years ago. He said that only places he could remember were the ones they stayed couple nights. Riding 180 km/h on Autobahn is not my cup of tea. I usually try to avoid crowded main roads, otherwise I could have taken the car. CRF is excellent adventure bike because you really want to ride slower and smaller roads😊

Lots of points made here. I am new to the channel but I understand and like what is being said here. Bottom line is: motorcycles are pretty good now and they have been for at least 20 or 30 years. If properly maintained they will last long. I still have my 1985 guzzi and 2005 GS. Soooo, how are manufacturers continuing to grow? Hence the craze of electronics, displays, accessories…. Totally unnecessary to go out and ride. Safely. If it’s wet, take that into consideration and ease up your wrist.

I have adapted and changed over the years. When I was younger I thought I had to ride everywhere I wanted to go so I had to take fast roads to get to the new fun roads. Now I mix it up with some long rides on mostly two lane roads and base camping with my truck and a bike, or my truck, enclosed trailer, and a couple of bikes. At base camp I explore in every direction until I run out of roads and then relocate. In 2021 I worked my way through 10 states with truck and bike. Camped in back of truck and carried bike on rack behind the truck. Awesome adventure!

Hi! You made some really good questions, indeed! I cannot answer them, I only can write my thoughts of motorbike traveling with my big adventure bike (Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa): 1. we always try to avoid highways, therefore we cover "only" around 350km/day 2. we don't carry camping stuff, because we like to sleep in a hotel/motel/B'nB or what so ever. It also might be very simple and cheap, but at least we can relax and rest "sheltered" and don't have to mount a tent in the rain. 3. We don't carry much tools, because modern bikes need trained people to repair. 4. "Electronic assistants" like ABS, ESP are mandatory by European regulations, but I would never "tick" them when ordering a motorbike. I think they just give you a "missleading safety feeling" which eventually let you take more risks. Cruise control was standard as well and I'm happy to have it, just to relax the right wrist once in a while. 5. I hoped to get e reliable bike when buying mine and I was NOT disappointed. 6. Even though we have a "rough" plan of the trip, we always try to keep as much as possible "flexible"... Ride safe and enjoy! Matt

Some riders want to see the world, and other riders only want to be seen by the world. I enjoyed the video and I think all the question are fair and many of them I've asked myself sometime. I prefer to spend my money in the actual trip versus spending it in the flamboyant gear to get there. And at the end of the every trip, I learn that I could have done just fine without this or that thing I packed. The minimalistic approach works well for me, sometimes less is more. Happy riding and don't be an idiot when you ride your motorcycle.

I really like this practical, real life approach to adventure riding. I'd even say: the smaller the bike the more adventure you get. If you travel for comfort and speed, what's the point of riding a bike instead of car? I believe in that rule so much that I never ride anything bigger than a 125ccm bike. Most of my long adventure tripe were actually on a 50ccm, and they were most fun. The best speed is around 80km/h - fast enough to get there eventually, slow enough to enjoy the ride with open helmet. I avoid motorways as a plague. Last summer on a 3-month trip around Europe and I never got even close to a motorway. The smaller the bike the bigger the reward. Feeling of accomplishment is enormous when you go light. Not to mention how much money you save on equipment that you can spend on experience. Pavlin is wise. Listen to him!

@Fady117
@Fady117 Жыл бұрын
You are right, and the answers to each of these questions can be essentially boiled down to simple common sense, which is far less common than we realize. From my part, I can provide a perspective on why you see some people on expensive, fully-loaded motorcycles, fitted with expensive outdoors gear, and just riding on motorways and then stopping at fancy restaurants to rest. They want a bite of the adventure cake without actually putting an effort into adventure. They want to experience a very different (and often highly uncomfortable) lifestyle than theirs, without sacrificing their own. And the best way they can achieve that impression is by getting the latest, top-end gear just to feel like they belong in that lifestyle. And obviously this means that they have their priorities in the wrong order and they'll waste a lot of money. You see this everywhere in a lot of things, not just with motorcycle trips. I'm a recent subscriber and I enjoy your content, thank you for doing what you do and keep up the good work.

I agree with all your points, however some things doesn't always have to be backed up by a rational purpose. Sometimes people just like to have a different sounding muffler or just feels better having a bike packed with electronics or whatever. Good questions by the way, and I will always be in favor of "less is more" when it comes to moto traveling - less plans, less luggage, less electronics = more adventure and fun. The bike itself cost me $5000Can 5 years and 58,000kms ago. I did a similar trip last year. Blissful. I often have to wonder over the same questions at times and always come up with the same answers. One is we are all different and two is motorcycles in this modern day are toys that you collect and will use with friends as more of a social pursuit. Old school riders that have a passion for motorcycles, that basically grew up riding bikes as everyday transport and toured on the same bike and done their own maintenance will have a different approach to someone who basically uses their bike on the occasional weekend for 6 months of the year and the rest of the time drives a car to work and back and to transport the family around. We learn things through experience, lack of experience can mean you just throw money at the situation, instead of taking small steps because you don’t have the time just buy the same bike that is the best according to who you follow on KZbin then do a weekend adventure riding course and you are an adventure rider. Then you go out and buy different bikes for different purposes so you can have more toys in your garage because as we all know, he with the most toys wins. It is all a game at the end of the day, KTM and BMW recognise this, that’s why they bring out a new and improved model every year with more gadgets, like Apple IPhones, people line up to buy the latest model, not because it is a vastly improved model that was vastly improved over the previous model but because it is new. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I own R1200GS not to be seen but because it's very versatile bike. It's like a SUV of motorcycles. Good on paved road and some dirt roads. I love the cruise control. Good wind protection. I like that it has a driveshaft. Don't need to fuss with cleaning and adjusting chains. It's got low center of gravity and it's easy to ride and control at slow speed. I can load it to the max and have a passenger. It has lot of torque and it's easy to control. Has more then enough power. Electronic suspension adjustment to accommodate various weights. When I remove the Vario cases bike is very slim and sporty looking. Good rider can take it into the twisties with ease. That's why it's the best selling adventure bike by far.

Most of your choices are rooted in logic and practicality and I appreciate your wisdom. However, like many motorcyclists I'm neither logical, nor practical, so I choose to ride a heavy bike with more power than I can reasonably require, fit an aftermarket exhaust and rarely travel more than 50 miles from my home. I still have an absolute blast when I do and I'm afraid when I get that urge for a bit of a blast, 70hp isn't going to get me to open the garage. On a trail you would leave me in your wake, but you wont be hoiking 4th gear wheelies. KTM 1290R by the way. 53 years old and the brains of a mackerel. 🤪

Hello Pavlin and colleagues :) About heavy bike on offroad, this it is a good question for Igor Brezovar who traveled on his superoverweight BMW around the world ... and alone :D (now it is more brand, than practical) Highway and speed only in first and last day of my travel is understandable, because vacation is limited :) Regarding safety and comfort.. depends on angle: If I will be very protected but sweating and overheated, then it is a risky condition to loose concentration. So it is also answer on expensive gear - comfortable and safe enough. Today almost all 700+cc bikes have Cruise control and TCS and ABS (mandatory since 2016 in eu) and some more expensive bikes have Quickshifter or automatic transmission. I see good benefits of it in case you have some physical health problem. Like missing finger, leg, injured muscle or any other disability. That ergonomics... Funny thing that recent Yamana MT-09 Tracer (without panniers) from 2019 had so bad ergonomics that if you put hands off the handlebars (at 40-50km/h and of course in very high speed with hands on it) it starts wobbeling . So yes, ergonomics is important and universal settings on some bikes should be set. Some bikes like my ex MT09 should be customized to owner. Not every bike is sensitive, generally it is sufficient to just set the suspension correctly (SAG), but sometimes it is necessary to put forks a bit down to distribute more weight on the front wheel. About muffler or whole exhaust system ... some bikes can ride better smoother from low RPMs and may reduce heat from the catalyc on legs. It is good for bikes which have issues with overheating in low speeds in long technical offroad passages. (some models of KTM, BMW, Guzzi) I spent time to comment your videos not because I feel smarter or more experienced .. like in previous video about 10 Lessons Which Every Motorcycle Adventurer Needs to Learn! Some points were missing to me if I'll be a complete newbie. And this video is provocative so I spent some time to give my view. I'm resigned to the fact that no one will read whole comment anyway :D Thank you for your work Pavlin :)

Interesting dispute starter Pavlin. In most of the questions i am not competent to answer because i'm not a traveller, but i do like your journey videos, and your advises. But i pretty sure in two things (and this was difficult to recognize, because when i was younger i wanted to ride like others, look like others, do like others): 1. If something works for others (gear, bike, camera, equipment, riding school, setup), not sure to work for me too. Because we are different. 2. Motorcycling is not allways based on logical choices (at least for me)

Loved the video within 30 seconds. So much so that Liked and subscribed. You raised very logical questions which has only one answer “ego boost”. Do you know there are humans on the street who’re riding s1000rr on the street in 30 mph? And never been on a track? Each to his own, but I never understood the relevance of misfit bikes. For example when Africa twin or 1250 GS is branded as do it all bikes, it makes me laugh. You can’t ride a GS or AT on trails where you can ride the t7 or crf300l. It’s impossible within the reasons of pure physics. Also, sports tourers! I laugh and get confused when people complain about wind blasts on motorcycles!

Uuu, I see someone piss you off big time, Pavlin 😂😂😂 Anyway, I plan to do the Iron Butt Challenge 30th June this year and have to do it on a motorway - I see no choice. But I'm fine with it, and I wanted to do it since I started riding 6 years ago 😉. BTW, this is about the distance from London to my home city back home in Poland. Few days to see family and country and 3 days to get back to London using back roads. I'm sure I'll enjoy every minute. Oh, my bike is Honda NC750X DCT (not sure I'd buy it again the DCT, but it has its advantages 😂). It doesn't bother me, what people say about my bike choice - it's my bike and I LOVE riding it. I don't always agree with you, but don't change and keep up the good work, Pavlin!

All very good questions,as for the first one,like you I ride a T7 because it is good value for money and simple. My riding gear was bought second hand for a fraction of the cost. I'm notoriously frugal so sleep in a tent most times even in the cooler months, I love camping and tents so it works well.With the money saved I treat myself to a nice meal at a restaurant and maybe a nice breakfast too as I'm a widower and travel alone so it's a chance to mix with people.I could afford the expensive gear and bike now but just prefer to do it the way I do and enjoyment is why we ride.

I'm more of the "let's not judge why other's do certain things" type. If someone wants to buy all the bits to kit out his bike to just go for a coffee run every Saturday, go ahead! If someone can afford and wants a 10k exhaust on his bike, even if he/she just does it because they like the sound of it, more power to you! If someone wants to travel the world on a 30 year old dirtbike, fantastic! Thing is, "adventure" is different for everyone. It's 2-wheeled therapy for everyone. And the "quality" of a trip is defined different for everyone. For one it's the pride in a all kited out bike, for another it's the experience of the nature while travelling, and for someone else it's the adrenaline rush of going fast on track with a screaming exhaust. Live & let live, is what they say over here.

Myself and my friend don’t plan anything, we just have a date we are going then wing it when we get across the channel (from the UK), we might do a day of solid motorway, we might not and go backroad bashing. We have a rough idea of where we’re going but have nothing set in stone. I have a Vstrom 650 XT (which I feel is too tall and heavy for me) and I’m considering trading it in for an MT07, my mate got ride of his BMW and MT09 Tracer for an MT09 and loved every minute of last years trip (once he got over the fuel anxiety). He said he preferred the MT once we got to the twisties and enjoyed the trip as a whole and that’s my thinking with MT07. I travel with my tent, mat, sleeping bag, chair, jetboil and change of clothes. That to me is the essentials and it’s very easy to get carried away and start chucking more things in. I have a habit of buying exhausts (multiple) for every bike I’ve had and oddly enough I’ve found myself doing the same this time but getting totally pissed off and going back to stock, simplicity, silence, loud enough. I think the pricing of big GS’s is sheer madness for touring, they’re way too big and heavy as they are without anything on them. Lighter is better. We’ve came to the conclusion riding faster doesn’t benefit us anymore on big trips, I’d rather drop 10-15mph and enjoy it and safe fuel than have it drink it. Riding away from your problems doesn’t fix them, face them head on with confidence. Tyres that last longer tend to be of lesser quality/harder wearing which in many circumstances can compromise on braking / traction. The bike you have right now, is your adventure motorcycle, you make it the adventure it is and your bike takes you on that adventure. Regarding tools, I carry a plugging kit and small battery powered pump the size of a can, due to previous punctures and being caught out, that’s it.

Bought my first bike at 51 years old. A Royal Enfield Meteor 350. 5000 dollars and easily does the speeds I like to drive (up to 75 MPH) and it makes me take the back roads which I agree are more fun to ride. A 5 hour interstate trip might take 5.5 or 6 hours at 55 to 65 on the back roads but will be much more fun

I’m new to motorcycles. I’ve only been riding for 2 1/2 years. But, the camping thing is not new to me. I’m so comfortable camping that I often prefer it to hotels. My tent feels like home, and the camping and cooking gear only weigh just over 4 kilos. I also consider this gear as emergency gear. For instance, Alaska and the Canadian Yukon can be unforgiving. I don’t do a lot of cooking, unless I’m staying in the same place for several days. I do enjoy eating at cafes and pubs, and use that as an opportunity to meet people, but I guess camping and camp cooking are also part of the experience I’m after. I’m a pretty good cook, but I do lose weight on all of my motorcycle trips, and that’s a good thing :) Almost 39,000 miles (63,000 kilometers) in 2 1/2 years and still having great fun.

I'm with you on most of what you say. I'm 63 years old and have been riding since the early 70s. One thing I have come to know is that just because we did something in 1975 doesn't mean it's still applicable today. Lots have changed in that time. Tires are better, oils are better, metals are better, etc. I've learned getting into an oil discussion is worthless, so I'll leave it at that. LOL.

Hi Pavlin, another great vid - the expensive bike is simply success of marketing. They tell those who have no clue (but lots of money) what is needed to have a "real adventure". So they go, usually buy beemers (and due to convenience) the gear sold at the same place. They have also been told that adventure includes camping with a tent, so they do - it´s that simple 🙂 (works exactly with your "christmas tree"-comment). The 1.000 KM on highways is something similar - the more KM´s you make the more adventure it is (blame marketing). But seriously - I do highway to get where i want quick but once arrived I use country roads to explore. Stay safe Q

Thank you Pailin from South Africa. It is Pepe again agreeing with your analysis about most want to be adventure riders. Too much gear, too many riding companions, not enough mechanical skills and the worst bad riding habits I.e. going too fast for conditions and showing off skills that they do not possess. I always decline offers to go riding with a group to a destination, long or short, why? None of my fellow riders have ridden their bikes in a month (I ride every day) , they must ride fast, they must filter thru traffic too fast and most important they fail to look far enough ahead or look at the road conditions and surface. The adventure riders feel that an adventure is only possible by pushing themselves beyond their cmfort zone. This is good to go improve skill levels but must be done carefully and in a safe environment. Cheers my friend Pepe from tzaneen (I ride my Xt 660 with love always).

Yes, I loved this video👍 Regarding the oil, the technology is really better, and the factory is profitable twice: Once, when he discounts maintenance costs for first hand customers, he encourages an increase in sales. The most over powered bike available still gets double the mileage my truck does, and that’s where all the safety features tend tome as well. Sport touring models are scarce and the adventure models have better positioning and wind control. The long service interval is due to better manufacturing and materials, which makes it as cheap or better to run a late model 1200 than buying a car with similar mileage. Add the approximately 1/4 the annual ins and not having room for another car but plenty for a bike and there you go. The big travel panniers make it more practical as a daily driver.
