Norman truly dives deep into the difficult and conflicting feelings one often feels towards an ex. The combination of latent love and newfound resentment can cause cognitive dissonance that is hard to deal with. He simultaneously wants the worst and best for his ex, offering a backrub in once sentence and threatening violence in the next. Truly, Norman Pain captures the struggles of a person who misses their ex, wants the best for her, and is still angry at her for hurting him (not that i would know).

I think what I like best about this and Party Time is how it is such a stark contrast to how things are approached in other genres of modern music. Sex, drugs, and mental illness in modern stuff is equal parts lamented and glorified. Even when it goes bad, it turns into a mournful romanticisation with that "wilted flower" and "starving, misunderstood artist" appeal and aesthetic. The Northern Boys take it much, much farther. Everything sounds happy and upbeat, but there's very obvious anguish and despair in every word. It's not even ironic, it's just what it is. Every encounter and abuse of substances isn't even framed as real relief, it's just more pain, but a different sort. Every song is hilarious and honest, in content it's no different from other modern songs like it, but there's nothing to aspire to, so it's even better because there's no looking at it with rose colored glasses.

Both of the songs are classified as masterpieces. The lyrics are brilliantly done in both songs , with an absolutely head banging beat

Turning the beats of "American Boy" and "Acceptable in the 80s" into absolute bangers is super impressive.

Unironically one of my favorite songs. There's no way you hear this and don't immediately feel giddy and silly. Every time it comes on my playlist, I stop whatever I'm doing and do a lil Kevin dance. Northern boys 4 life

If you're wondering what the sample is, it's "Acceptable in the 80s" by Calvin Harris.
