This was my grandpa’s favourite song, he passed away last year after having been stuck in the hospital for half a year longer than expected. He hadn’t heard this song in years and was one of the last songs he heard.

As a transplanted Scot, living in Canada since I was 3, I feel closer to Scotland through songs like this. My Mum and Dad often would play these songs for me...then as an adult I sought them out myself. So many warm fuzzies when I see the photos and hear the tunes from classics like The Alexander Brothers, Kenneth McKellar and Andy Stewart! Thanks so much!

I was born and raised in Portsmouth but my late mum was from Aberdeen and growing up in the 70s we spent most of our summer holidays at my granny's at Balnagask Circle. I loved it and I left the UK for America in 2016. One of the last things I did was stay in the Granite City for a few days.

The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen song is a traditional Scottish song written by Mary Webb for a home sick Aberdonian lass who she worked with in a hospital kitchen. Mary Webb was English and lived in London and had never been to Aberdeen, Scotland. She was born in Leamington Spa and was a concert pianist.

In my old job I used to help at a coffee morning which was run to help older adults who were socially isolated - in particular individuals with dementia. We would always play music and it was great to see folk light up and join in. This song was a particular favourite that EVERYONE got involved in and still knew all the words to :)

The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home to me The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Are what I long to see I've been a wanderer all of my life Any many a sight I've seen God speed the day when l' m on my way To my home in Aberdeen When I was a lad, a tiny wee lad My mother said to me Come see the Northern Lights my boy They' re bright as they can be She called them the heavenly dancers Merry dancers in the sky I'll never forget, that wonderful sight They made the heav ens bright The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home to me The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Are what I long to see I've been a wanderer all of my life Any many a sight I've seen God speed the day when l' m on my way To my home in Aberdeen I've wandered in many far-off lands And travelled many a mile I've missed the folk I cherished most The joy of a friendly smile It warms up the heart of a wand'rer The clasp of a welcoming hand To greet me when, I return Home to my native land The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home to me The Northern Lights of old Aberdeen Are what I long to see I've been a wanderer all of my life Any many a sight I've seen God speed the day when l' m on my way To my home in Aberdeen Source: Musixmatch

They have it slightly wrong, they have old Aberdeen all the way through , that's wrong, as it's just " the northern lights of Aberdeen is where I long to be" in that section, but otherwise spot on ( just for those from further afield etc)

I've commented on this song before but: My granddad's favourite song. I played it the night he died and the lights flickered. I play it on the anni. of his death (2 years on he 11th of Jan) with a tumbler of Walker Red in my hand and Scotland flag pin on my shirt - his drink and his country. Miss my grandparents and aunt (all Scots) like a limb. These songs always give me a warm feeling and bring a large smile to my face. Thank you!
