As a transplanted Scot, living in Canada since I was 3, I feel closer to Scotland through songs like this. My Mum and Dad often would play these songs for me...then as an adult I sought them out myself. So many warm fuzzies when I see the photos and hear the tunes from classics like The Alexander Brothers, Kenneth McKellar and Andy Stewart! Thanks so much!

The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen song is a traditional Scottish song written by Mary Webb for a home sick Aberdonian lass who she worked with in a hospital kitchen. Mary Webb was English and lived in London and had never been to Aberdeen, Scotland. She was born in Leamington Spa and was a concert pianist.

In my old job I used to help at a coffee morning which was run to help older adults who were socially isolated - in particular individuals with dementia. We would always play music and it was great to see folk light up and join in. This song was a particular favourite that EVERYONE got involved in and still knew all the words to :)

They have it slightly wrong, they have old Aberdeen all the way through , that's wrong, as it's just " the northern lights of Aberdeen is where I long to be" in that section, but otherwise spot on ( just for those from further afield etc)

I play it on the anni. of his death (2 years on he 11th of Jan) with a tumbler of Walker Red in my hand and Scotland flag pin on my shirt - his drink and his country. Miss my grandparents and aunt (all Scots) like a limb. These songs always give me a warm feeling and bring a large smile to my face. Thank you!
