I don’t know what it is about this particular video, but my eyes were watery by the end of it. Your footage showed a harsh and challenging landscape, yet there was so much connection to the land and the people. You have an eye for beauty and the gift of storytelling. You know how to show the beauty of a place no matter how desolate or unforgiving it can be. ❤Bravo❤

I don't know what it is, but there's something about going to the end of something...going as far as you can go...that's just enticing. Whether it's in a country, on a peninsula, on the ocean, or on a continent. I think it speaks to the very core of that human spirit of adventure and exploration that's driven our species since the dawn of time to leave the safety of our huts, our islands, our suburbs, and set out in search of What's Out There. It's what makes us build in Antarctica and what makes us leave footprints on the Moon. This video encapsulates everything about why you are doing this, and why WE as a people do this. It may be hard, but "we do it for the memories."

The good thing is that you think about it and ask about it! And you let yourself feel some anger and sadness about it, because it is a serious problem and you are caring people! But you have to move on. You can’t fix it! I have felt the same emotions in different parts of the world when people ask for money. It’s heartbreaking! The world is a fascinating place , but also a place of great inequality. I am retired and I have donated a lot of time to help immigrants in the US. That’s one way I have helped less fortunate people than myself. And I donate money to groups like UNICEF, Red Cross. I think that’s important to do!

@@NextMeridianExpedition Yes it looks just like the African Savanna. Possibly because South America was attached to Africa millions of years ago. Northern United States and Canada looks a lot like northern Europe. Central United States looks a lot like Central Europe, and Southern United States looks a lot like southern Europe and the northern part of Africa. As far as the terrain is concerned. The UK for instance has rocks that or not in Mainland Europe but are found in eastern Canada and New England. North America Central America and South America were connected to Europe and Africa. I'm sure you already know this, that all the land masses were one continent called Pangea.

I clapped when Mathilde "Pushed" Albo out of the mud, with her hands UP in victory...YOUR channel is far better than cable and being a Patreon member is well worth the couple of bucks to help pay for ALLLLLL the stuff that goes into making these videos. What would I do??? Those people are living in poverty, compared to Nick and Mathilde. To see Albo drive up with the Air Con going is a dream to them and to take care of the kids with simple things is the right thing to do. Good question! They were quite a walk away. They had difficulty telling us how far. But we think at least 30’ away. But more interesting and hard is we heard their school was two hours walking from their home. Sometimes they manage to hitch a ride but sometime they need to walk it. That puts things in perspective really … that evening their mother was not far away and they went all back together by motorcycles.

Beautiful work. I suppose the makeshift „tolls“ along the way are no different from government collection points on a highway. Same idea, same response: one needs to pay to use the road. 50 Cents per toll?
@NextMeridianExpedition Жыл бұрын
It is a good point. Between 50 and 2 dollars not much indeed. We asked Colombians friends for advice before going. Their issue was that the price and number of ropes seem to have increased dramatically on a technically public road. And if people start giving 1 dollar to each of the 80 ropes it might quickly raise again. That s their argument. We obviously are here only once so it would not affect us.

Excellent video! We are considering the trek to Punta Gallinas also, but may reconsider based on your experience and our timeframe. We grossly underestimated the challenge! Good on you for pressing past your doubts. Subscribed for more. Cheers!

Yes our friend Tom ( who travelled with us in the USA if you remember ) passed by the area a few weeks ahead and had warned us

@@NextMeridianExpedition It can't hurt to be stocked up on cookies and coffee for the rest of your trip in South America. You can always consume anything that is not exploited from you. I enjoyed videos with Tom.

SO ON THE UNPASSABLE ROADS IN PERU ETC THE 18 WHEELER'S AND BUSSES USE THIS TRICK FOR THERE WINCH. WERE TALKING 4 TO 5 FOOT MUD BOGS. SO THEY ATTACH THERE WINCH TO TWO STEEL STAKES THEY DRIVE INTO THE GROUND THAT ARE ABOUT THE LENGTH OF THE HI LIFT JACKS 3 TO 4 FEET LONG. WHEN THERE STUCK THEY RELEASE THE WINCH ABOUT 25 FEET AND THEN DRIVE THE 1ST STAKE IN THE GROUND AND THEN THEY USE THE OTHER STAKE THAT'S ALSO DRIVEN INTO THE GROUND ABOUT 5 TO 6 FEET AWAY FROM THE FIRST STAKE. SO IT ELIMINATES HAVING TO HOOK UP TO A TREE OR ANOTHER VEHICLE IF YOUR STUCK BY YOURSELF. PS AND A SLEDGE HAMMER WILL BE NEEDED...

It's a pitty we missed you. Don't miss the high,, very high mountains, especialy when you visit Equador. By the way, when you get nea the Equator, find a scale and measure your weight. It will be a lot less than usual. Take care, hope we cross roads some day.

The situation with the tolls is similar to a situation I encountered some years ago in Indonesia. A group of us international folks went to tour a park with a dormant volcano. As soon as we arrived, we were largely surrounded by about 30 men and boys who were trying to sell us local "crafts" -- some of which were actually hand-made and pretty cool (carvings from the soft pumice stone, etc.). Some of the younger kids had pencils and calendars they were trying to sell. We tried to pay all of them off with a lump sum so they would not follow us down the trail, but it didn't work. The entire time we were accompanied by our "guides," who kept up constant sales pitches. I ended up buying a fair amount of stuff I didn't want or need, because they seemed pretty desperate and would not take no for an answer. In the end, I was glad I did. I kept some of the cooler carved pieces in our house for years. And in retrospect I would have felt like a complete heel coming to their country and arrogantly not buying anything. But it was a slightly uncomfortable situation.

Yes it is really hard to navigate. There a really no good answer either. But I love that eventually those remained some memories you liked

What would I do? I would learn a lot about myself. I've been in that circumstance and while I know paying the "toll" encourages the behavior and I should not do it, I am a sucker for those kid's faces. A dollar to them is immeasurably more valuable than to me. That said, I think you did the right thing. Pass through unmanned tolls, distribute cookies and candies and other sundry items where you can and funds where necessary. I would be inclined to be more generous on the way out. More for me than for them. It makes me feel good. Did you see a lot of the same faces on the return route or does it switch up?
@NextMeridianExpedition Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for answering in details and with understanding (we were a bit scared to share such topic online). Yes what is one dollar? It is what we thought. But then some ropes start asking 2 and 5 and 10. We still don’t have the answer and believe that maybe the answer is not to be found in us but more a general systemic problem of exclusion. Most faces where the same… some new ones, some where not here.

What do those people out there actually do for a living, apart from 'rope stops'.
@NextMeridianExpedition Жыл бұрын
You see a lot of women and children cause men are often busy working. Depending on the area some are fishermen or take care of goats. There are a few very very small shops selling fuel or water but they seem to be more for travellers than locals. The logistics of living in this region take up a lot of time. Women from the Wayuu are also known for their work making bags that are famous across Colombia.

How do you insure that you will not run out of fuel on a journey like this?
@NextMeridianExpedition Жыл бұрын
Good question. We have two tanks on the car which covers us for about 1000 Km of fuel. Then we have another additional jerrycan for security. As we map the rough plan we keep a buffer to be sure we can complete the entire route. But with those two tanks we are usually comfortable
