He: - Didn´t die on his way to Jerusalem and actually reached it - Wasn´t deposed or betrayed at home - Didn´t betray other crusaders or crusader leaders (just a little bit of pillaging in Spain) - Didn´t do anything stupid at Constantinople - Departed home by sea and returned by land getting to know many territories in the process - Made a succesful return trip back home to brag about his achievement and enjoy his fame! It's long been a trend among many Scandinavians historically as far back as the Viking Age and probably before that and certainly now that they are innately curious, very intelligent, knowledgable, hard-working, but many are encouraged to see as much of the world as possible. I've met many people from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, even Finland that are well-traveled and have visited, experienced, and described in vivid details the sites, cities, countries, continents they've been too. New Zealanders and Aussies have some of that same adventurous spirit as well as many Germans.

@@davidroberts7282 having shared a house for over a year with a Dane i agree with that. But that desire to travel is not innate to them from birth, it comes from the open mindedness which is cultivated by their education and upbringing. Nidhögg isn't "satan" but he is gnawing on the roots of Yggdrasil. So he is so to say the force/being which try to destroy it all. But he's not satan as this is Norse gods, creatures and mythology now Jewish. As for the second part that would also be wrong because surely not all angels are fallen angels? And as for presents at-least here in Sweden where Jul predates Christianity the original meaning of Julklapp which is what the presents are called wasn't presents under the Christmas tree it was a prank on the neighbours where the kids ran around knocking onto people's doors and then opened threw in a prank gift typically with a writing on it. So it wasn't the modern style. To bring in a decorated tree was a thing German Christians came up with. But various plants have had mythological meanings before too. Our origin isn't middle-eastern monotheistic and much of our traditions aren't either.

@alanpennie
@alanpennie Жыл бұрын
@@jordanandrew2786 It's possible that technically he wasn't a crusader. In later years a royal crusade needed to be declared by The Pope so that the crusading king could impose a special tax on his clergy (which they had to pay for fear of excommunication) and give his soldiers a plenary indulgence (which allowed them to kill anyone they liked without having to do penance). However I'm not sure these rules existed before The Second Crusade and even if they did Norway was on the periphery of the Christian world, with a poor, weak Church, so they might not have seemed all that relevant.

Sigurd I also sieged Acre if I recalled correctly, along with Baldwin and another lord. Norwegians are fun... They also inadvertently *ahem' contributed to the start of the Falklands war, have the oldest continuous border in Europe, and recently got asked by the Queen of England to take care of a rampant reindeer herd on one of the now wildlife protected islands in South America... (Norwegian whalers were the first to colonize/settle/set up stations on most of these islands, as well as many in the caribbean under Denmark-Norway - by the way the Kalmar union was supposed to be ruled by Norwegian king Haakon VI but he "lost" all heirs and died so the Queen inherited the title and Sweden opted out, starting centuries of internal conflicts in Scandinavia) They also wanted to gift a mountain to Finland on her anniversary, but couldn't find a way around the constitution which bars any cessation of land

One point about Sigurd's epithet: While it is often translated as "Crusader" the actual monicker (Jorsalafarare) simply means "person who journeyed to Jerusalem". A more accurate translation might be "Jerusalemfarer." This is partly where the uncertainty stems from whether or not he was journeying as a pilgrim for religious clout or as an actual crusader for military purposes.

In Norwegian Sigurd was known as "Sigurd Jorsalfare". "Jorsal" being the norse name for Jerusalem, "fare" being attached describes a journey there. I suspect it's related to the modern Norwegian word "Ferd", which means "Journey". So literally it just means something along the lines of "Sigurd who journeyed to Jerusalem". But that sounds really strange in English, so the easiest way to make an English version of it was "Crusader."
