In the books, Noah and Allie actually got along. I hate how couples in media are often precieved as “boring” if they get along or-God forbid-respect each other. No amount of star crossed lovers and soulmate tropes will ever justify Allie cheating on Lon. He was a genuinely a great guy.

365 letters is not romantic. If your ex texted you once a day for a YEAR with no response you’d call them a stalker and block them but in a movie in old times it’s “sweet” 😳

Not the same thing at all. Their relationship was never one sided . Their last interaction was him trying to break up with her and her being furious about it. Also she came by his work to tell his best friend to tell him that she loved him before she left. Also because it was letters and not text message , they can be prone to getting lost or whatever. Maybe he had some reason to believe she wasn’t getting them. Why do people want to ruin this movie ? I don’t get it.

Noah is the male lead, yet he has no qualms about threatening to fling himself off the ferris wheel if Allie rejects him, which is a total dick move. If he were the Villain, then it wouldn't be romantic at all.

I remember when I was a teenager, my friend told me how her ex whom she was trying to hook me up with (I was into him), she told him she didn't believe he loved her and so he went and hung from the balcony (on the 10th floor or so) to prove to her that he loves her. Back then I thought that was the most romantic thing I ever heard. As an adult I think that's so toxic and manipulative

I swear I had the same opinion when I was 17 years old. My friends used to call me weird for my opinions on the movie. My best friend said « I want to see how far the guy can go for me to say yes. I would never accept his first advances ». And even recently I would tell her « if I like a man, he shows signs of interest, we are both single, why would I hide my interest? “ these games are just so childish and stupid.

I for sure loved the 'older' Allie and Noah scenes. Big emotional punch for me. My grandmother had Alzhiemer's, and when she eventually got so sick that she had to go live in a home, my grandfather drove a 2 hour round trip everyday to see her and give her a kitkat bar, which was her favorite kind of chocolate bar. My grandfather was an emotionally distant man to all of his family (I am ASD, and looking back on it, I feel like my grandfather wasnt necessarily 'distant', but that he also was autistic...), but his commitment to my grandmother, long after she forgot him, is something that still makes me cry....

I like the fact that they talk about the positive components too because it shows that just because something is flawed or imperfect that doesn’t mean it has no merit. In this era of extreme black and white thinking, hot division, surveillance and idolizing the “perfect” more and more as we become more hooked to our screens and detached from reality- well, it’s important to know that sometimes a piece of art can promote really bad and really good things at the same time, and ignoring the really bad can be just as much of a crime as ignoring the really good. Nothing meaningful or timeless will ever be perfect or clean, because if we are to create honestly, from a real human place, imperfections and flaws (as well as joy hope and redeemable qualities) will be within that art. And no one person is perfect in every aspect. People also are capable of immense change, and in order for change to happen, we have to provide room for growth, which requires space for imperfect humanity. This generation is revolutionizing the way we handle victimhood and suffering- instead of demonizing these things, victim blaming and aiming to erase our struggles, we are trying to highlight and speak up about them. But our Puritan and judgmental culture of the past has still stuck with us- it’s not enough just to admit that we’ve struggled and been hurt- we also have to prove our own moral purity, prove that we didn’t deserve any of the suffering (still over using ideas of punishment, being deserving, judgment), and for some people there even needs to be an evil figure in the story, a complete villain. True healing and empathy will come as we move on past this stepping stone and learn that (although yes completely bad people exist) most people are far more nuanced, we still deserve sympathy, community and a place in this world even if we fall in between the cracks or are human. This acceptance and acknowledgment of our place in the world eases our need to demonize others in order to feel better about ourselves, too.

Back then I could see the appeal of Noah and a little bit today (he built a house when we can't even get texts) but I was so sad for Lon. Now, all these years later, it makes no sense to me why she didn't pick Lon! She barely thought of Noah until she saw him in the paper! Sigh! Were the parent's really wrong? Like, we just went over how Toxic Noah is and then talk down on the parents for not liking him? Granted, humiliating him at the dinner scene was not right, but were they 100% wrong? Plus the guy that they like wasn't that bad, as you just explained.

Movies based in the past are always going to have some problematic issues! Why does it have to be addressed if it's not part of the main story? Yeah representation is important but it's not the only thing. My mind flashes to all these women adapted reboots and how some of them aren't all that good because they focus on the fact that it's women leading the story instead of telling an actual good story

I find this film so boring( like a high cost cringy telenovela) and being not white, I didn't understand why to point out the lack of representation as a defect of the movie, like probably there were plenty of white people of South High classes who didn't even care about black people's struggle and didn'teven notice it. So it isn't farfetched, then if it addressed those issues it would be guilty of "white saviour complex"

Not to brag but I’ve always pointed these things out to everyone who would praise the movie. I just couldn’t stand people calling it romantic when it was clearly toxic and abusive at times. For example when he got upset she didn’t want to have sex with him. It was so disturbing and I just never understood the appeal. I’m surprised the video twisted it and forgot to mention his initial reaction which was visibly frustrated. I rooted for Racheal and Ryan in real life though. Two Scorpios born at the same hospital..that is romantic.

You're going to see everything as toxic if you delve into every little detail. People dont seem to realise that movies are a product of the time they were made. Its not perfect. No movie is ever going to be perfect and universally liked. This whole witch hunt people have calling out movies and tv shows itself is toxic. This is why we are only getting crappy Netflix movies, sequels and remakes these days. Movie makers clearly feel they need to make movies and shows to the woke standard or they will get cancelled, called out... whatever. It leads to really boring movies. Thankfully, I have pre 2010s movies to watch.

Even as a young, dumb teen with very little romantic experience, I knew this was a bad movie. I don't see how any sane, level headed person can see a guy follow a girl on a date with someone else, threaten to kill himself in front both of them unless she goes out with him, and think that's a healthy way to begin a relationship. I have so much hatred towards Nicholas Sparks for reasons I won't go into or else I'd be typing all day, but this movie is what started my utter distain for him. Fuck this movie.

Who thinks this movie is about what romance should be like? Just about every review and KZbin discussion of the movie is about the relationship being toxic. Nobody ever says this movie is really romantic. The main thing I remember is that some loser threatens to fall off a ferris wheel to get a date with Regina George from Mean Girls. Most romances are about stalkers or other creepy guys played by actors who pointed out how creepy or selfish their characters were.

Wow, the terrible fucking patterns this movie projected on my younger self. Looking back now, this glorified UNHEALTHY relationships and made me believe THAT is what love looked like! It shouldn't be that hard to love someone. 😳 and it's sick that we've made people think these are healthy relationships. HIs devotion till the end is moving, but the way they got there should have been less traumatic for both characters...

Maybe it's cos they've been churning out "Toxic" series but the backlash on this feels excessive. I've followed this channel from their days as ScreenPrism and they've always been about thoughtful analysis around race, gender, love, socioeconomics in culture/onscreen, are y'all new here?? They literally talk about the GOOD of the movie and are bang on about the toxic aspects (I'll admit that race one was a bit much)

...nah. You guys tried hard to show the positive side of this movie but its still 99% problematic. What might have made it a little better and real as a story would have been to see Noah's progression as a man alongside his wife, instead of jumping in time from them being young and stupid to dying in each other's arms. You're made to believe that the two of them had a great successful marriage and a lovely family life but it may not have been the case at all.

I don't think their relationship is toxic, in the beginning of the film we can say that he was a little bit immature by kinda forcing her to date him but he was a teenager and it was before they got into the relationship, after it things were normal and beautiful. And about them fighting all the time it's normal all couples fight, yes she's a little bit aggressive but it's not like she hurts him, And I love the fact that he calms her whenever she's angry and most of times he apologizes and kisses her and she has never tried to hurt him or do anything bad to him , that's totally not toxic that's normal. About when they got older when Noah was telling Ally that he loves her he wants her forever, well what do you want him to say, he should've shown her the reality that not just because it's hard to break up with your fiance you will not see the truth of your feelings, he knew that she loves him but she might just go because she's being 'too' nice to not hurt her fiance, he cannot just let her go without knowing anything about how much he loves her and seeing the reality in general it'll be a big miscommunication if he didn't say anything. Look relationships should not be perfect they will fight but they swiftly get back together, he treats her like a princess and she's one of the kindest characters I've ever seen, they understand eachother and they feel safe with eachother and this is why they stayed together till the end.
