An American-born Zen monk Hyon Gak Sunim explains some of Bodhidharma's teachings. While I don't own the rights to this material, I hope those who do won't mind it being shared here. The video comes from btnworld.org

This series makes me want to take every book, document, sutra, and thought I've acquired over the years about Buddhism and throw it all in a river! So succinct, such a clear pointing that it leaves nothing more to be said. Beautiful. Homage to the perfection of Wisdom, Homage to the Awakened!

Dharma discourses are like being offered a meal when we are hungry. They certainly do inspire. "No reliance on words or phrases" does not diminish the wisdom passed down in sutra, but like a picture of food, it will never truly satisfy our hunger. Practice Sitting Zen. What we actualize in this practice will make the words in the sutra resonate with truth. I think you are looking at it backwards. The sutra are the truth. Our mind obscures their brilliance. Keep practicing.

There is a framework that is called: Eight Circuit Model of Conciousness. I think it's really cool tool for putting buddhism in a more contemporary scientific framework. For me it has improved my way of understanding buddhism in a larger context. I reccomend everyone interested in checking up the wikipedia article on the subject. There is also a good summary of the model by Robert Anton Wilson on youtube, in the movie clip named: Techniques of consciousness change. Another good clip is: Language and reality

Add to that General Semantics. Both, as explained by Robert Anton Wilson, are great pointers.

"Truth" as he speaks of! We all see truth. This surpassed my existentialist thought of the only ultimate truth is that there are no ultimate truths; which in a way coincides with the teachings. My mind is blown yet was simplified simultaneously and I now feel so much more at ease

By the way, these notes are mixed, some of disciples and some actually are bodhidharmas. Now there i see a problem, only a master who is at level which bodhidharma can tell what did bodhidharma say and what did disciples say.

At 34.47 Sunim makes a move from peivate language to public language. If Wittgensteinian private language is not possible, from buddhist's emptiness, it makes little sense to talk of private experiences or of private mental states giving rise to public language.

The only reason why Buddhism didn't blossom in India is because Brahms. China and Japan had very beautiful soil prepared for the flowering. Even if they said they believed in magic.
@Lucky736789 жыл бұрын
really. buddhism core principle is. ahimsa paramo dharmaha. now how did it blossom if they have not understood that primary principle. buddha was choosing an ideal..which in reality is not close to ideal. so it did not survive in india.

Bodhidharma similar to Krishnamurti. However, its not easy to get the world's wild disruptive children to behave without some notion of reward even if it is through an illusory concept such as karma, heaven, or Santa's naughty list.

He's speaking from a point of view of someone who has practiced Buddhism for a long time so it might seem vague and strange for a non initiate. Emptiness is realizing that nothing is ever independant, we need the whole force of the universe to make us function, the sun the moon the water and air that makes us alive. Realizing the ego is not an independent entity you stop attaching yourself to past , present and future. Suffering cease to exist. You can practice meditation , vipassana yoga etc to attain a state of enlightenment but there is nothing really to attain everything happens in the present moment. Cleaned and seeing everything clearly from a mind of emptiness the ego stops having an influence and bliss happens. That is what is called enlightenment seeing into the true emptiness of the mind.

There's no historical records on Bodhidharma so scholars think it is nothing but an interesting myth
@sivanesannavukarasan56396 жыл бұрын
this guy first needs to learn how to pronounce Bodhidharma and the reason why people get lost in the history and believe the origins of his teaching to be based in china is because his teachings were not meant to be written down, but the chinese of the time did so to extend their newly found wisdom through the lands. when he was going to leave back to SOUTH INDIA (his home) the chinese "foresaw" that a great "evil" will be unleashed in china if he left (obviously because he taught them so much) and he voluntarily consumed the food they poisoned and then buried him in their soil. bodhidharman was a thamizhan (south indian, tamil speaking - tamil is the oldest civilized language of the world) and history just distorts this fact
@sivanesannavukarasan56396 жыл бұрын
at least he doesnt have most of his facts wrong
@dannyyy974 жыл бұрын
The chinese poisened him your saying??
@sivanesannavukarasan56394 жыл бұрын
@@dannyyy97 yes...poisoned his food because they believed his body should be buried in China so that they are blessed, or the curse they foresaw would be avoided. So he voluntarily consumed he food... And let them bury him in China. The shaolin temple was the first martial arts temple. And it was founded by his teaching

For the first time I can't listen to Buddhism. Everything is a lie, but he is a lie. I can use my mind to create. There has to be some people in Buddhism who don't vilify the mind.
