Thankyou for providing this very useful Framework into which I can organise ideas. Jumping straight into something like Ian Watt's "Rise of the Novel"without any foreknowledge is daunting. Much appreciated.

I'm also preparing for my final exams in English literature and I find your presentation very helpful. It's a well structured and very informative overview and serves as a good starting point for further research. Thanks a lot.

I am currently preparing for my final exams in English literature (university teacher studies in Germany), and I want to thank you for this presentaion! It really helps me to build up a solid foundation on which I can start further reading (genre, issues, historical/cultural background).

I very much enjoyed this overview of the development of literature through the ages. My only comment is that instead of the novel including and/or representing these 18th century contextual changes and concepts (POV, narrator, privacy/individualism, etc.) it was actually the medium of the book and literacy, which allowed these new individual freedoms to occur, and not the other way around.

Just as I was contemplating putting more of my lectures online, I noticed that Tracy Dunne-Derrell had mentioned on Google+ this one I did awhile ago about the history of the novel. What do you think? Should teachers / professors record and share their lectures this way more often?

Hi Gideon, I needed to revisit this and saw your comment. I am no longer a classroom teacher but if I was I would find video lectures a great way to bring in new perspectives and give the students another option for getting information.

Hi Prof. Burton, I don't know if you are still checking out your channel, but just in case you do, I am so grateful for your lectures as well as many other excellent ones I can find online. I am a literature enthusiast and find my college education isn't enough, and am currently not able to acquire a master's. It's so generous of you to share the resources online and educate people like me. I hope you have a nice day and thanks again. Tian from China.

Thanks for this informative summary. I really love 18th Century novels. I especially love the Gothic novels of the second-half of said century. Most of my favourite novels were written during that period.

A helpful and welcome survey, but do note you are sorely mistaken in associating Reality TV with either realism or reality.
