I always felt like the Doom of Valyria reads like a nuclear fallout, in fact, the passage about princess Araea and Balerion reminded me a lot of the Fallout series, a mixture of the most gruesome things you can imagine mixed with almost gag humor. Worms with faces? Sounds so ridiculous and you may want to laugh but at the same time it's too disturbing. Thankfully these days real nuclear weapons wouldn't have the same kind of ruinous nuclear fallout that old weapons did, it would still be a disaster but we wouldnt have to abandon the places bombs were dropped. But since GRRM is odler this is probably a concept he didn't have when writing.

we also know now that Aegon might have talked to the Starks about the long night and established friendly relations based on world security, I mean the starks words for millennia and yes millennia were about another long night and to always be ready for that. Guy shows up with dragons which themselves seem like an opposite to long night symbolism, that would drive a leader to think practically. You are right that they bend the knee because dragons are like nukes and they were afraid, but also for the Starks specifically they were more concerned with a long night and saught alliances for that war.

You'd think the Starks would've, ya know, sought alliances with the other Kingdoms close by, like the King's who ruled the Riverlands or Vale What if the Targaryens never showed up, what was their plan? 😅

@@umwha I don’t think Aegon knew about the others specifically. He knew there would be some kind of threat a great winter with “absolute darkness riding on those winds”. It’s not really out of character for Aegon to leave overall defense of the north to house stark most of his reign consisted of him touring the realm keeping it together while his sisters and Orys handled more of the day to day ruling. Alysanne’s impact goes beyond just visiting once as she was the one behind the the new Gift. And brought up the state of the watch to the starks and Jaeharys. Didn’t she also sell personal jewelry and gems to help them build and repair their forts? But yeah you’re right about the general inaction regarding the north. Alysanne probably does the most for the north/nights watch out of any Targaryen.

@@jay-1800 he isn't quite right. Even Aerys was doing stuff for the Wall. Many Targs did ignore the Wall, but look at the state of it, the Stark's neglected it as well and it was their duty more than anyone else.

@@umwha they were still concentrating on uniting the realms while the Starks were their Allies and could handle the Wall. For those generations that they weren't at the Wall they were still putting out rebellions and trying to conquer dorne the first time, building the capital, rebuilding the realm from all the inwarring and the war of Aegon conquering. Queen Viserys modeled the Kingsguard after the Night's watch. King Maegor the cruel sent "hundreds" of faith militant and "scores" of poor fellows to take the black. We know Jaehaerys and Alysanne did a lot for the wall. The most truly, and they were the first generation to have the secured crown, the time, resources, and relative peace to do anything. After that there is a succession crisis, and Viserys is chosen and we know he was king of useless but then the dance happens and the prophecy is basically lost. But we do know the dance caused the dragons to die, and in more recent years due to some prophecy and dragon dreams they were trying to hatch them again. Aemon knew and after forging his chains chose to serve fat the wall. Rhaegar learned something of it from the library and was doing whatever for his part by ig knocking up Lyanna with a magic baby but Aerys the mad king, ironically, had grand plans of expanding upon the wall and building a second one. So he was def trying to do some ssshhh. Is he truly paranoid if everyone was actually after him? 🤷‍♀️😂🤷‍♀️

Originally, there was a lot of Quentyn Martell but his sections felt like a completely separate video. Dragons function more like Fighter Jets, placed into a Medieval setting. An 4-18 flying overhead some Emglish army facing a French invasion has just about the same effect as a Dragon. Well, Dragons seem to have more natural armmo. Vhagar in the Dance is an armed Boeing 77, with Napalm being tossed out every now and then

I think they operate more like an attack helicopter. Most of them, anyway. Balerion was pretty rare in his siZe. The dance had many combatant dragons, but only one or two were more than half the size of Balerion. i think 747 is a tad exaggerated but he was big. It's so hard to get a good idea of the scale on those things once they reach a certain size

Really interesting video. One comment I would make is about the idea of MAD, mutually assured destruction. In real life, what stops nukes from being used is the total annihilation of the world if any one nuclear power tried to nuke or attack another. However, if more people in the world of ASOIAF had dragons, I imagine there would just be more dragon fights?
@KevinPendragon
@KevinPendragon Жыл бұрын
MAD is essentially just a way of saying "If we fight, none of us is going to win in the end" -- which is pretty much how the Dance of the Dragons ended. Rhaenyra and Aegon II died and the Targaryens lost all of their dragons. It's not quite mutually assured destruction but its similar enough. Because I don't think Rhaenyra's son, Aegon, being crowned king in the end counts a pyrrhic victory. (side note: you reminded me that I was supposed to include MAD in this video but I completely forgot. Targaryen MADness, their nuclear dragons... maybe that will go into another video)

Oh, also...there is a theory that the three eyed raven (before he got in the tree) inspired this event, as a massive sacrifics (as all magic in this world has a price) to shift the weather, creating a "false" spring" which brought together two lovers whom were to create the child of prophecy.

Loved your video as always, just wanted to point out the ""fun" fact that not ALL nuclear missiles are closely guarded secrets, watched an episode with "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" and it had nuclear weapons as the theme in that episode. What is weird and disturbing is that most Nuclear Weapons in the US are run with the SAME level of technology as during the cold war, plus it's not very well guarded, one food deliverer once found the gate to a station without guards, and when he felt the handle on the door into the base, it was open, so he ENTERED THE NUCLEAR WEAPON BASE TO DELIVER THE FOOD!! Man, i honestly wish we could get rid of all but one nuclear missile, give the remote to some random person who doesn't want it and spread a world wide rumor that at least 10 nuclear missiles are out there, in the hand of 10 people across continents, cultures and reeligions....so, behave. Stupid idea, but so was creating so many nukes that we could destroy the planet a thousand times over, but i dont trust those in power enough to behave if the rumor above wasn't there...and one of these days, some idiot would attempt to shift the power balance, on which day we'd tell the one with the remote to bomb a remote mountain, just to remind said people to not fuck around. Not the only system that needs a revamp, capitalism, racism and sexism has to go as well,,,but that can't be solved by nuking a mountain:< Take care brother, Solo - Sweden

Imagine that. A Door Dasher delivering food sets off World War 3 because a door wasn't locked. What a nightmare lol But not only are nukes poorly guarded, there are MISSING nuclear weapons. @@KevinPendragon OOhhh...i wouldnt google "portable nukes" or "suit case size nuclear bombs" and the wprd...missing, But you just described cold war 2, doordash workers has a bone to pick with the system..back in the days....like just a few years ago, they were under the poverty line and had to take out loans to buy the new electric bikes, many of the workers on this level were mexicans and indians, many lived like 12 people in a two room apartment to be able to afford to send SOME money home. They were hired as contractors so they had no rights. And they had been told that if they even thought about unionizing, there were always people to replace them. But, they did anyway, they stiked, got a better deal and a deadline for their bosses to meet it, the deadline came and went...nothing happened, until covid...then doordash + anti union structurizing happened. So, yeah, doordash + nukes + unions = the good old days:D Take care brother, gonna check the rest of yer vids this week, because your videos are fire (and ice ....heh) Best regards, Solo - Sweden

I think a lot of us... fans of GRRM's works... have made the comparison between dragons and nuclear weapons. What leaves me baffled is the fact that he had a reason for doing it... other than personal ambition (or in addition to personal ambition)... and that had something to do with the overarching battle between the Lion Lord of Night and the Maiden Made of Light... Light vs Darkness... and very bluntly Life vs Death. With prophecy being what it is, I don't know how anyone can know with certainty of an impending doom or battle between these forces... but Aegon, supposedly, believed that the battle would happen, that the great opposition would rise north of the wall, and that a united kingdom of westeros would be necessary in order to defeat it. I think the ultimate goal, however, is really supposed to be to withstand it... balance those forces, so to speak. War to conclusion is a complete and utter surrender of one opponent to the other - but that is really not what we are looking for, is it? For how would we recognize the value of pleasure without the agony of pain... the sweet savor of victory without the bitterness of defeat? We have enough chaos in this universe and it will never be defeated... so we should live our lives trying to further enable ourselves to make order out of it as much as possible and withstand it until we can. So... is the rise of the Great Other (Chaos, Darkness, Death) really definite and impending? How can anyone know with certainty? And when our best weapon against chaos is to make even more darkness and chaos (fighting fire with fire, so to speak), how can that be a truly winning strategy? We may as well surrender to the Great Other right now.

Great video as always. Do you think that the longer Dany has dragons and the bigger and more deadly they get, that power will corrupt. To have dragons is to use dragons. Can a person hold such power and not use it? I think a great deal about Dany and hold her above most, but holding someone so high runs the risk that they will fall and in falling she will become what the show made her. I know this was a dragon video but I can't think of one without the other. The realms of man most unite but how to accomplish this feat. Everyone that will try to rule will appeal to some but not all. I don't know what George has in-store for us, but I will love to be there for the journey. Can't wait for the next video my friend. Stay safe

It would not be enough for Daenerys to have dragons and not use them. That would be seen as a weakness (which is what happened in ADWD). Dany will be a lot less hesitant to use her dragons in the future. She will grow more and more comfortable solving her problems with fire and blood. What we have seen so far is that Dany is great at conquering but not well at ruling (similar to Robert Baratheon, ironically enough). She can destroy but she cannot build or reform. Which is painful to read because she desperately wants to be a good queen and she means well. But she's a destroyer. It happens everywhere she goes and Westeros will be no different.

Thanks for another video, Kevin, but unrelated, I was rewatching your Varys trilogy and one question that I couldn't find a good answer for puzzled me. Why include Tyrion in the faegon scheme? When he goes to finish Tywin, he threatens varys' lives and Varys has nothing he wants, so it's confusing as to how he meant to manipulate the imp like he did in ACOK.
@KevinPendragon
@KevinPendragon Жыл бұрын
You're welcome and to answer you question: I think Varys included Tyrion because Tyrion has proven that he will support a false monarch if it benefits him. Tyrion hated Cersei and Joffrey but he worked really hard to keep them in power, even risking his own life in battle, because Tyrion benefits a whole lot from having his sister be the queen and nephew be the king. Also: Tyrion has very few options if he wants to come back to Westeros and maybe even inherit the Rock. Young Griff could possibly make that happen if Tyrion is obedient and helps him get the throne. Tyrion is also really smart and capable when he's not lusting after women or drinking himself away

The story is anti-war, but is also anti-injustice, using dragons to end injustice isn't bad. Dany's mistake in Slavers Bay was letting the Yunkai'i slavers survive to re-enslave everyone she freed. If she had purged Yunkai and Mereen of Slavers, the same way she did Astapor, she could then safely turn west to burn the slavers of Volantis next, they even conveniently shelter behind the black wall, separated from the innocents. Then Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh, and finally Pentos could be liberated from slavery. Also she should confiscate all the slavers property and distribute it amongst the freedmen.

As for the whole it's the innocent that suffer the most part. Thus is true but it gets abused by the brats of Odin a lot. Who are the true innocent in times of war, those who celebrate their King or Queens ascending to the throne while not taking part in the fighting (the people of Kings Landing). No, if you celebrate your Kings ascending to the throne, you have picked a side in a war, you are not innocent. You can use the excuse of you didn't have a choice, but that is not true, you did have a choice, you just weren't willing to risk your life for it. Who are the true innocent in times of war, the children who aren't old enough to understand what's going on. Destined to grow up being brainwashed by the hate and guilt left over from those wars. If those children turn out to be brave, the fear of those who experience the war will discourage them from being brave or try to capitalise on them. If they turn out to be kind, guilt from those wars will capitalise on them until they've got nothing left to give, guilt tripping them into sacrificing themselves to make sure all those who picked a side live better lives instead of celebrating the fact that the child is kind they will bleed it dry rather than sacrifice themselves for that child's happiness. The vast majority of oppression in thus world isn't done by the government. Its done by the people. Refusing to encourage their children to follow their hearts because its not what their parents would do or want. Fear is the only thing that's oppressing things in this world. Governments follow the will of the people, they have no choice but to, but if people refuse to talk to them, and instead tryst others to speak for them you can't really blame them for not knowing what you really want.
