I like to see videos of different photographers with different genres and different opinions and styles. Some things remain the same, like physics, math, and especially geometry. But the better channels ask the viewers to find their very own style and answers and present what they are doing as their choices. And even though a lot of great gear is used, the person behind the camera remains more important than the gear. I have learned a lot in the last few weeks and I really like your channel, even though birds andwildlife is somethi g I like to shoot when I get a chance, it is not my main genre. Thank you for your great videos.

I’m fairly new at nature photography. One thing that I’ve been doing a lot lately, if I have a cooperative subject. (Like a perched hawk). I take a few shots, then move to the right, take a few, move to left, take a few. Get lower, take a few. Add foreground blur, take a few more. The only thing moving is me. It’s really interesting to see the difference on the computer and is really teaching me about “How to look” at the scene better. I photograph birds mainly and they move quickly, but I know that there are opportunities improve on reading a scene differently!

This has been a revelation to me! I was already including out of focus elements in the background but always tried to avoid things in front of the subject. Now I am actively trying to get twigs and reeds out of focus in front of the focal plane and am very pleased with the results. Thanks for this!!

Hi Simon, this little message to let you know how I appreciate your work and your way to share your knowledge! Crystal clear, straight to the point and extremely pragmatic. As an amateur wildlife photographer I follow so many people but without being disrespectful with the others you are the only one for who I stay so enthousiastic when you publish a new video, even after 2 years following you. Even if I start being quitte experienced, I continue learning so key tips which allows me to progress. To support your work and to continue progressing, I decided to purchase your course. Just started few minutes ago, can’t wait to reach the most advanced modules. Thanks for all and please continue being so generous, you are an excellent ambassador for our passion!

In my opinion, the photo at 5 minutes with the sun reflected from an apartment building window is phenomenal. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around the chances of that happening more than once with that type of angle from the sun. I really appreciate that you let us in on some of the ways to help us improve our photography both in the field and in processing of images.

Happy New Year! May 2025 be a successful and healthy year!! Highlighting the subject in the different light vs the background is something I do and didn't realize until now, but struggle with the blown out histogram. Primarily the blown out back ground and it's a work in progress. Trick is practice and knowing it's going to happen, having the knowledge to know what dial to turn to alter exposure before losing the shot. 2025 goals. The thinking in 3D for me is always trying to hide or omit pylons as I usually photograph horse and rider, wildlife is a side goal. Appreciate what you do for us shutter bugs and congrats on the nod from Canon and the gear.

When doing street photography or doing candids in local museums, I like to pick out my frame--a doorway, a window, a railing on a bridge, say--and then wait for a subject to enter the frame. It's kind of a reverse process, deciding the composition before the subject, but it works and it creates the 3-dimensions you discuss here. Oh, and Happy New Year!

Another great video Simon. Since you asked about other ideas I'll give you one. It's more for structures or objects than nature though. When I shoot something with a building in it I try not to shoot it straight on, but rather from a slight angle left or right to give the building, or fence or windmill or whatever some depth from front to back or "Close to Far" as another KZbinr calls it. Happy New Year Simon!

Put your foreground advice to good use on a wander to the supermarket this morning. Captured a sea of foreground dandelions in front of a background tree, much more interesting than just a tree and sunny sky. A while ago, I learned about the "squint method" to help with composition. Simply squint tightly so that you can barely see anything. Then look at your camera screen and see if you can still identify the subject. If so, then it's probably a good composition.

The best way to train your 3D awareness and strategy ist to shoot landscapes with a wide angle. Often it's just centimetres (of the position of your camera) which determine, if your shot's a hit or just scrap. When you afterwards change to a longer lens you of course have to move a lot more, but all you have learned with the 15mm also applies for the 500mm.
