I started off as a med-surg nurse, and I agree that it is an excellent foundation. Within four years I was appointed fill in charge nurse, I precepted numerous new grads and much more. It gave me the background I needed to do what my passion has always been...to be a labor and delivery nurse. I find that a lot of the "seasoned" labor and delivery nurses I work with have no clue about anything outside of pregnancy. So as the newbie labor and delivery nurse, I am the one that everyone comes to if there is anything "medical" going on with the patients! Go figure

My hat goes off to nurses and techs. I spent 1 month in the hospital a few years ago and those nurses and techs were amazing. They went above and beyond their job title. Ladies thanks for the work you do cause not everyone can do it. God Bless!

I've been in hospital a lot lol the most recent was a stroke, I'm 36 and I made so many friends with nurses. They do above and beyond their duties. The family members that came in while a nurse was doing medication and start asking questions they've already asked lol and I'm sitting waiting for my painkillers lol. But you do alot, more than some Drs lol xx

Med/Surg is a great foundation for a new nurse and my experiences on this unit has made me a wonderful nurse with great assessment skills. I remember when I worked Med/Surg we could have up to 8 patients but this changed in 2006 to 5:1 nurse-patient ratio. As a nurse we wear many hats in our profession. If you can make it on a Med/Surg unit you can work on any unit in the hospital.

Lol, I enjoyed every part of this video. Its much better than watching other nurses videos where they just sit and talk all long to tiredness. I'm actually a Volunteer here in Miami, FL at a Public Teaching hospital for the University of Miami, which is Jackson Memorial Hospital. I volunteer on the Med Surg & Tele Floor, and everything you said in this video is actually true.Yes Pharmacy will call 3 days later to find out meds on a patient. The phones rings constantly, I most of the time help with the secretary as an assistance. And as a candystriper they will put everything "simple on you". But I do enjoy the days, not all, the floor has fun energetic staff and a nice manager, so we all get along quite well.

Hi Patricia & Hannah. I'm starting the nursing program soon in hopes of earning my degree in Nursing. Maybe extending my education for nurse practitioner too. I love your nurses note series and I love how honest you guys are on these videos. When Patricia said "you have to be honest." I was so glad that Hannah's answers are. Your answers didn't scare me away, in fact, I'm still gonna go after my nursing degree. I'm just gonna expect these flaws in the field. Keep up the great work! You've just received a new subscriber and supporter.

First I would like to say I love Hannah. She is definitely full of personality. Secondly, I couldn't agree more with nursing not being what I expected it to be. School prepares you with the educational background. Everything else is learned with time and experience (ie: time management, knowing when something is wrong, when to speak up, etc). This idea, Pat, is a great one. This could be our corner to express what's real and help those who are in the same boat as we are.

Many hospitals will assign 8, 10, 15 med/surg patients to 1 RN. 5 med/surg patients per 1 RN is safe---anything more than that is UNSAFE: not just for the patient but for the RN. Too many patients result in additional errors---and RNs WILL be held responsible and thrown under the bus. BE CAREFUL! You could very well lose your license and/or be sent to jail. BTW: There is NO nursing shortage---only limited nursing jobs as determined by the hospital.

Nursing has a way of burning you out quickly if you are not careful! im having such a dilemma >.< im torn between nursing and animal careers. the only reasons why i would go for nursing is cause of the money, and the skills and knowledge you learn, you can use them outside of work like if i ran into someone on the streets thats having trouble breathing i would be able to help them. i guess is obvious that i shouldnt do nursing cause my reason doesnt consist of "i love working with people" but still....

I am surprised that here in the great US of A the nurses are treated as second rate employees. They get no respect from their co-workers, Management, and even the patients. Worst is the nurse that makes up the schedule and sets up a 3/12hrs shift w 1 day off and back another 3/12hr shift and calls you to see if you want overtime
@christinewilson4660

A patient cannot be admitted unless authorized by an admitting doctor. Doctors admit patients whom they determine have a medical diagnosis that warrants inpatient attention. If a registered nurse has an issue or doubts about the patient's admitting diagnosis they should take it up with the admitting doctor.

Note: Hospitals routinely 'under staff' deliberately. 49 out of 50 states are NOT limited to the number of patients per nurse they can assign--only California has legally mandated nurse-patient ratios standards. The humungous patients loads given nurses (especially in med/surg units) is NOT due to 'the shortage of nurses' but to the hospital's policy which is carried out by the hospital administrator, clinical nurse executive, and is then implemented by the charge nurse. Salaries cost money--and hospitals are businesses. There is NO 'Nursing Shortage', only limited nursing jobs as determined by the hospital. BTW: If you are working on a med/surg unit and are taking care of more than 5 patients at a time---this is UNSAFE!!! And be careful--many units will call themselves 'ortho units' or 'renal units' ect., when in fact they are med/surg units--which is saying this unit will receive any patient of any condition; med/surg is a common 'dumping' unit for patients either refused (its called diverting) admission by other units (such as psych) or those patients awaiting admission to other hospitals such as LTC (long term care) or nursing homes.

I totally agree! I am a new grad nurse and have done many interviews to work at medsurg units recently. Hospitals usually hire only one or two nurses per medsurg unit every time rn residencies programs are started. If there is a shortage of nurses, how come they only offer few spots for new nurses in medsurg? A week ago I landed a job offer for a night shift with 6 to 7 patient/nurse ratio at a medsurg unit. We need legally mandated nurse-patient ratio standards here in Texas as well!
