I've been a subway employee for close to 16 years now. Started as a conductor (the person opening/closing doors and making announcements), got promoted to train operator (the person in front driving the train), and I'm now a train service supervisor (the person who helps supervise it all). In my time here, the subways have been more and more chaotic. We just had a coworker and friend of mine almost lose his life because someone slashed him across the neck while he was just doing his job. We are being targeted and there is nothing being done about it. Coming to work shouldn't be this dangerous.

I worked the subway primarily for 25+ years starting in 91. We were taught to be aggressive but fair. Not everyone was arrested for jumping the turnstile, we gave out summonses to those that weren’t recidivists. Those that were recidivists were arrested and sent to Central Booking. We tossed perps and came up with guns, knives, mace, brace knuckles, some bosses allowed you to bring any weapons that weren’t guns and knives while others had a senior cop or they told you that if you collar up with this nonsense, someone may get robbed because you were processing an BS arrest. The problems started with the Merge of all 3 police depts. NYPD pulled transit cops into narcotics and other units because they were never seen in the street or housing projects so it was easier to use them as undercover a or backups for undercovers, a lot also went to street crime. Even though more cops were hired, crime was so low they lied about putting more cops in the subway ! Fast forward to DeBlasio, he hated cops except when he needed them to make his neighborhood safe in Park Slope, had transir cops pulled from different commands to bolster his area then he became mayor and he had full control and bail reform besides the fact he alienated cops into doing just enough to get by ! Now you have bail reform and cops can be sued for anything, so why would a cop go out of his way and be proactive ? They’d be nuts to run into jobs to protect people that voted for bail reform and who would sue them first chance they got ! Well NYC, you voted for bail reform and communism in politics now you got it ! By the way you haven’t mentioned how Adam’s has put people in positions they didn’t earn and that they know nothing about ! Kaz Daughtry, from a cop that should’ve been fired to det specialist, then Asst Commish and now Deputy Commish who tells bosses and cops what to do at jobs and he never did any of it nor did he pass the tests ! Nepotism and incompetence, let alone corruption has ruined the NYC subway system ! ( Cut me some slack on the grammar, autocorrect did it )

@@jimo2665 People who are carrying illegally are well aware, and many of them do get arrested and serve hard time. But the reasons they feel the need to stay strapped never changed, so they just get the firearms again when they get out. Plus, when they leave prison, they need to be able to actually participate in society in order to BE law abiding citizens. And the fact is that no one wants them to reintegrate, so they go back to a life of crime. My partner works with this population trying to reintegrate them. They have a hard time finding jobs and housing because even if they're doing everything right and staying out of trouble, people don't want felons working next to them or living in their buildings. So they just go back to crime because how the fuck are they supposed to eat?

I was a kid in the 1990s. I remember as a little girl people saying hold tight to you purse and watch for pick pockets if you are in NYC. By 1996, wow it was an amazing change! I felt safe, never saw anything criminal (I’d say when I’m out and about from London to Phoenix I see something criminal). I felt safe and had a blast! It’s looking like Detroit in some ways. I wonder if the amazing city and surrounding areas will be like Detroit in 5 years. Deteriorating infrastructure and crime.

It's still in comparison to other cities in USA a safe city. It's just you have more people. "mo people, mo problems" also you know the media is going to be covered more in NYC. I just think it's definitely more complicated there because you have to deal with so many people. And people have different needs, wants and opinions, It's a problems are magnified. But overall, I think NYC does a much better than most cities in United States. There are cities in United States that do much worse with fewer people, and yet NYC is able to do so much better in comparison. Acknowledging of city imperfection and wanting better for it is a good thing.

@@milliedragon4418 I’m guessing it is. I haven’t been there in about 10 years- my close friend moved from there to LA, now to phoenix where I live. Literally each of her moves were because she was escaping the social problems. Now that so many California residents are bringing their political views to Phoenix we here are VERY unhappy. I’m sure New York probably doesn’t look like las Angeles and all the cities around it. My gosh I saw people camped and drugging in the areas where the elite of Hollywood used to (still do?) live. I have a home in Missouri and go to St Louis often, and while it’s always been dangerous and I was a violent crime victim in 1991, it’s a dirty rotting hole now. At least by 1980’s and 90’s crime was bad but the city was alive and fun! Detroit? I can’t imagine NYC ever looking that bad either.

It has nothing to do with New Yorkers not being allowed to freely carry weapons, specifically guns. It has everything to do with New York’s culture. Carrying guns doesn’t automatically equal a safer city, look at all the safest cities in the world, many of which are in Europe, developed Arab nations, and far east Asia. They don’t need to carry guns to feel safe or be safe, they simply have a better culture. It’s not about carrying guns. Allowing everybody to carry guns in a city that’s falling apart is probably a bad idea.

I am a former elected Union officer for TWU Local 100 which is the Union for mta nyct workers & I am a current Shop Steward. We have approximately 45,000 Union members in this Union alone & well over 100,000 mta workers fyi. I am a Conductor for 25 years. This place is MUCH worse than ever & that includes my memory of this system for nearly 2 decades before I worked for mta nyct. So that is over 40 years! I can tell you with 100% certainty that NONE of what was on this video will work to any real level even combined! No real core issues were even discussed in this video. The core issue is We the People are not self governing anymore & for a long time. We have approximately 40,000 police (and even 750 national guard which we do NOT need & is a complete waste!) & now many police officers are working 12 hrs shifts yet nothing is changing & it won’t. That is because having more of the same is NOT self governing. You can double the police force & work 12 hr shifts permanently & this crap won’t stop. This is because there are approximately two dozen train lines with well over 400 stations with multiple entry & exits points with multiple platforms with multiple mezzanines & many train yards & other buildings that run this system which all have to be protected by SELF GOVERNING! No one including us who work in this extremely dangerous work place can defend ourselves without serious repercussions which tears apart the ability to self govern. Laws & rules must be changed that permit disingenuous politicians, mta officials & even including ada & da’s to go after those who rightfully defend themselves. What happened to that poor sap who busted his butt to get here LEGALLY & was running his store while he was attacked behind a counter with no where to go & he CLEARLY used justifiable force to stop the person trying to inflict great bodily harm or death upon him without just cause, ow right he was arrested & the ONLY reason that case was dropped is because Lee Zeldin (R) was running against hack a lung hochol (d) & Lee Zeldin was making political traction over this case. Dont try & wiggle out of that fact since that man should NOT have been arrested at all & not even close! No one hardly even steps in to help anymore because you can’t defend yourself or others or you will be arrested & or brought up on internal charges & looked to be terminated. If you really want the real scoop stop doing these click bait feel good/not good videos & interview someone like myself who won’t hold back! Just found your channel. Great job. I was a conductor on the #6 between 1999-2004. The subways were much safer though I did get assaulted by a rider who punched me in the face one night. I left NY for good 5+ years ago and it’s sad to see the subways in such tough shape. My heart goes out to the law abiding people who ride the trains and my heart and respect goes out the transit workers. I know the deal and the dangers you face everyday. Respect. Salute.

Such a shame with all the hard work and ‘broken windows zero tolerance’ policing they did in the late 1990s and 2000s making NYC a safe city only for it to go back to the dark days of the 1970s and 80s.

It's honestly surprising that these stations are literally like nearly a century old, and yet they haven't even bothered to actually upgrade them with better hardware, wider platforms and necessary safety features. It really should've gone through a network-wide rebuilding effort from the 80's/00's. Here in our country of Australia, our stations actually do get upgraded every 20-40 years with a new design and better accessibility. But over in New York, they're so complacent and full of slack-activism with their infrastructure, so much for a "world-class city" that's just literally a slum behind the facade.

to be fair, we still got a lot of old and shitty stations in Australia too - some even without lift/ramp access for wheelchairs. But yeah for such a rich and famous city like NYC you would expect it to be at the forefront of modern mass transit.
