This is like a modern day sequel to "For the Love of Money". Glad they posted the lyrics to leave no doubt of the message.

A great track from one of the greatest groups of all time. Eddie, Walter, and Eric are singing truth to power. I became a lifelong O'Jays fan in the 1970s, in part, because of the socially conscious music they recorded and performed. If the forthcoming album/CD is their last, they will leave their fans satisfied that they went out saying something of substance with their music. As I have stated in other posts, a song like this will probably not get the airplay it deserves because of the nature of radio today. The video is a great complement to the song. As a recently retired teacher of African American History, I used music frequently to teach history and to expose students to pertinent issues. Songs like this can tell a story more effectively in a few minutes than hours of news reports can.

This song gives out a very important social message. I'm puzzled that it doesn't receive that much radio airplay like it should. I forgot that most radio stations are corporate-owned, nowadays, and this song would offend corporate America.

CONTINUING ON WITH MY INSTANT LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE FORTHCOMING O'JAYS ALBUM ... In response to a number of people getting in touch wanting to know more, here’s the Hill rundown of what you can expect from Messrs Eddie Levert Sr, Walter Williams Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant on their forthcoming “Last Word” album. With more than a little poignancy in, not only the album title but the varying feel of all the tracks, kinda like a representation of all the musical personas the group presented over the years. Lyrically the songs deliver too. Yeah, of course, there’s the expected luvd-up urgings but there’s also some biting social comment in equal measure. Anyway, I love this set, so here’s my rundown for what it’s worth. “Do You Really” - my personal fave - kicks off as a mid-tempo slinky affair, unfurling slowly with heavy-hitting lyrics ‘bout changing times (good and bad) and, musically, not unlike the verses to The Temps “Just My Imagination” at faster tempo! Each of the guys gets their turn to deliver a verse and its magic! Yet mo is to come; the groove hits at about four minutes in, hollering out the title hook whilst the men let rip with soul-drenched exhortations, wailing and utter grooviness. Fuck I love this! “Start Stoppin’” - totally infections modern Soul stomper, complete with a hypnotic singalong chorus that’s gonna go on to become an end-of-night anthem - and someone knows that, dropping things down to just a drum beat (cue mass hand-clapping) as the inherent emotion lifts your Soul. “Pressure” comes across as offering a nod to maybe Latimore and Southern Soul in general; blues-picked guitar and Hammond vying with the braying brass for attention as underscores to the vox and watch out for the, all too brief, b-line fade-out groove. “Above The Law” - were it not for the trio’s unique vocals, this could be classic Whitfield-produced early 70s Temps! Deep and heavy politicafunk, with sinister strings see-sawing and jittering throughout underscored by slabbed-out b-line. Serious funk gear. “’68 Summer Nights” finds the guys in “Use Ta Be My Girl” territory, exquisite harmonies carrying a singalong, happy, summery groove. “Sweeter” revisits their ’67 Bell hit “I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow (Than I Was Today)” with more than a little Doo Wop feel and highlighting those majestic harmonies above an acoustic keyboard. “I Got You”, the opener, drops as a light and airy sweet soul exercise in happiness and joy. You can just hear it segueing into “Love Train”! “Stand” is the single solitary track where, if you listen a little more carefully, you can detect just a little of the strain five decades have put on THAT voice, but the overall groove does just that. Deepness with Philly meeting the South at times. “Enjoy Yourself” reminds me a little of the Delfonics at the outset before settling down to being a classic up-tempo sweet soul workout, with yet another instantly hooky chorus harking back to the halcyon days of the early 70s complete with beautiful cooing. Ends too soon and needs a longer mix. If this really is the final album then it’s done them proud - BANG ON THE BUTTON! The O’Jays - wow! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGq4ioqmgqyYidE kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHm2fGpnoZyfmM0
