rdavidr Not any kind of expert, but from what I know of force propagation, the problem is that the jingles are too close to a dampening region (the rim). If you have spare material, try not cutting the center out, and place the 8-2 pattern as close to the center as you can make it.

Dave, i started watching your videos a couple months ago with your $20 drum series. I've Been watching your vids since and you inspired me to start playing drums so I went and bought a pretty decent kit and have started playing- and thanks to you, I love playing it. Keep up the great videos.

rdavidr tbh bro idk if u notice when u were playing but, its actually a great way to pice up accents. u mentioned hittin near the ring wich makes the jingles respond. one u learn when and how to use that lil tid bit of spice. its could really add some flavor. i suggest u give it another go and really play with it on some jazz or funk or just something edgy or groovy

Maybe its better with the jingles only responding when you hit between them. Kinda add color if you hit there when doing ghost notes.

Perhaps you would get more jingle action if the O was fatter and the jingles could be positioned closer to the centre of the snare where the head amplitude is greater. It might be easier to play between them too, but there would be more dampening as well.

i like that they only work when hit the space in between the jingles, because you can still play the snare as just as a snare, but add the jingles sound when you want to mix it in.

Man its not a failure at all!! That snare sounds so nice!!! It damps the head so the o ring makes it even fatter! You groove was nice as well to demo this thing!😀

Try out a wedge shape that you can jam up against the far rim. Then you can hit it when you want the jingle sound and lay off it when you don't. I have a cymbal chunk wedge with jingles and it works great.

that beat you did with your right hand playing on the jingle ring and the left on the two and four was dope as fuck. I definitely agree with you that the sound is subdued but that's actually kind of awesome. you can leave it on the snare and get a normal snare sound but by changing your attack spot on the snare you now have a lot more sound options available to you.

Even though it is typically null when hit in the middle the slight accent of it from hitting between the jingles is enough to give it an interesting depth, even though slight it is still apparent enough to where it gives the effect needed i like it
@logannewhouse28967 жыл бұрын
I'm sure someone has already recommended this, but I'll say it anyways. since you got more response from the jingles by hitting the actual ring, you should get better response if the cutout wasn't a ring but was a disc that covered the entire surface of the head. this would stimulate the jingles more, but has obvious drawbacks such the decreased rebound it would cause.
@Alvin-bmw645ci7 жыл бұрын
Great idea.
@jacobmoody57887 жыл бұрын
I like it the way you made it, I think it's good that you can just get a straight snare sound without having to take it off of the drum, it seems like they were a little too hard to hit though maybe twist the ring so the jingles are facing you to make them easier to hit?
@RoeShamBoe7 жыл бұрын
if you half the width of the ring itself (the drumhead material) so that the edges of the jingles are in contact with the snare head you might get more action from them

You need to elevate the jingles on a pin/bolt so they can jingle. This is like putting a cymbal on a trampoline and expecting it to ring. It needs to be lifted on a stand to resonate.
@dfunk3117 жыл бұрын
I think that sounded bad ass!!!
@Led1989577 жыл бұрын
In my poor opinion you should add jingles to a circular sheet like those in the beginning of the video, like the Fat one, instead of a cutted ring. I think that a ring can't catch all the vibes from the center of the snare head; or you can make a smaller circular sheet (like a 6"or a 8"), add some jingles on the external line and place it in the middle of the snare head, so you can hit it in the center, and the jingles will be closer to the hitting area. Sorry for my terrible English, and Keep it up, you're great! Cheers from Italy! :)
@jakemorse5357 жыл бұрын
I think it turned out cool. It's just enough of an accent alone, but when you were grooving on the snare, is was even cooler. I'd like to hear the snare with no ring and then dampened with the ring/jingles. Snare sounded pretty thick.

Hi rdavidr Thanks for another interesting video and concept. Considering the jingles only respond when you strike close to them, have you thought about using a bigger O-ring? The one you grab at the 42 second mark for example. The jingles could be closer to the center of the drum and may have a better response.

@tikidrummerpoi7 жыл бұрын
Might just be the thickness of the head you're already using (or the tension...or both) plus the thickness of the Mylar of the fiberskyn heads...may really mess with the resonance and the response of the jingles...maybe a thinner bit of head material? Otherwise, I like that you can choose your moments when using the jingles or not...keeps that hi hat hand on the hihats or elsewhere so your groove is consistent. Not a fail at all Sir!
@tsvtsvtsv7 жыл бұрын
i know this vid is kinda old but i've seen this and the BFSD snare bourine and wondered why there was no suspension for the jingles. if you put a nut or something to raise them by like a half inch or something they should have more room to vibrate. ultimately i think this type of mod would be most effective in the form of a clamp that goes over the outside of the shell and has bells in a circle around the outside of the rim. that might be a fun project for someone who has more time and resources than i do
@ZachKyew7 жыл бұрын
I would use a thinner plastic. Make it easier for the jingles to vibrate more, rather than just jump up and down. Maybe bigger holes for the rivets, too.

maybe if you trim more off the sides to make it not as snug to the rim it would have more give to the jingles. or maybe use the thickness and place the jingles on the side almost like a zip zag pattern so it's all clustered together more which may cause the vibration reaction to reach the jingles more.

Spread the Jingles out a touch, so you can use it for the purpose you demonstrated... & have the option of orienting it toward the part of the Snare closer to your body... but not having to worry about striking the Jingles. Or would that place them prohibitively far from your Head Mic?
@666Hazard6667 жыл бұрын
I swear the Attack drumhead company made coated heads with jingles attached.. I think I saw them in a copy of DRUM magazine like 20 years ago or something.. if you had a marching snare head cranked up then attaching jingles directly to it in this way could work well.
@DefkalionDs7 жыл бұрын
As always a well done video! Maybe you could use on the floor tom, to give it a more "clickish" sound? Btw, have you considered making a nesting drum kit?? :D
@logannewhouse28967 жыл бұрын
I have an idea that would probably be a huge waste of materials even though it would probably sound good. my idea is to take a drum head and melt holes around the perimeter much like an Evans HD dry. then you could put rivets through the actual head, and definitely get the jungle sound. However, the big drawback with this idea is that the jungle sound would not be easily removable.
@Kambodrambo7 жыл бұрын
