For me, Oblivion is just a timeless masterpiece. The sad reality is that after hundreds of hours I know how most quests play out and there's really no replay value anymore. But it's fun to just ride around on your horse and listen to the lovely soundtrack.

Oblivion is my favorite ES game simply because the questlines are more fleshed out than in Skyrim. (Morrowind's a close second.) For the life of me, I could not get as immersed into Skyrim as I had with Oblivion. Everything just felt more shallow, and with all of Oblivion's issues, that's saying something.

Morrowind is still my fav, but not because of the map marker stuff. The world and atmosphere just feel so unique compared to the other games and a lot of fantasy media. I mean Morrowind feels like a different planet completely and I love that.

Hot take: Skyrim owes ~60% of its lasting fame to the modding community. They're the real reason people are still playing it to this day. Vanilla Skyrim's combat wasn't even _that_ much more polished than Oblivion-- enemies were still damage sponges, still plenty of glitches/exploits, and there were much fewer options when speccing your character. Only thing I can say they definitely did better in Skyrim was archery and the removal of the guards' Spidey Senses when you commit crime. (Edit: beer-inspired typos)

the map markers are only as small part of the past experience. I personally enjoy the feel of Morrowind more, the biggest thing for me was atmosphere and Morrowind kills at this. Morrowind feels more fantasy like as in the stuff you see in Morrowind you wont see in real life, and like the later series you wont see it much in other games either.

The reason I prefer Morrowind (and it was the last of the three games I played) is mostly about world and story presentation. Your role in the story, the lore of the Tribunal and the integration of that in the world is a lot better than the other two games. The map marker and quest design help with this, it improves the immersion, but I think in the end it just comes down to better writing in Morrowind. But I can't deny that it has not aged all that well otherwise.

Ive burned that city a time or two. You guys know how your bounties eventually resets back to zero, depending on how much crime you committed... Well I recall the first time I discovered this mechanic. I just wanted to try the armor on. Shop keeper got mad... I felt justified, cause self defense. Then the guards got involved, and I wasn't paying any fines or serving time for self defense. Nor was I gonna run. I painted every inch of that city red >:D Then I was banned from the city for 207 real hours. I even cast a paralyze spell on an essential npc out in the lake.. it was too deep and by the time he regained consciousness he'd already sank too far. Needless to say I soft locked the main quest on that play through. xD

Oblivion combat is more fun that Skyrim combat, the speed stat exists and plays a huge part of weaving or circling. Sure Skyrims is more weighty and realistic, but who cares? All you do in that is cancel attack into power attacks until your green bar is empty. You can't move backwards faster than someone can move forward because everyone has the same speed.
