At least in this instance, it's part of a theme instead of just for the pretty colors.
@deliciousdishes45316 жыл бұрын
So what other people might miss, is that this album picks up where their legendary 2007 release "Precambrian" left off. Like, literally. Not only in theme, but with the literal same melody/chord progression. The intro to this is basically a hyped up version of that double album's final track. Great touch and shivers down my spine! As far as to the actual album, mostly agree with Blayne. Those two songs are such juggernauts compared to the rest of the album. I feel like before (especially on Precambrian, which is my favourite non-Neurosis, non-Amenra, non-Terra Tenebrosa post metal album) they were able to kind of have a more consistent quality or space things out better.

Super happy to see this band get some coverage, been a fan since their Fogdiver demo. They did the 2 album thing before with Heliocentric / Anthropocentric, I would consider it a pattern at this point. And yea, it's some artsy nonsense, but they are consistently super good at it. Fantastic group to see live.

I wanna love the ocean, they have everything I want in a band, sludgey huge riffs, progressive tendencies, and dynamic vocals. But something is missing for me. I’m not a fan of their preachy lyrics. I really like the Post Metal side of this, but can’t really get into the core-elements especially the vocals
@deliciousdishes45316 жыл бұрын
I mean that's kind of a thing with post metal. It's a form of sludge metal and since that has heavy roots in hardcore, the vocals are generally there to stay. Though yeah I'd agree The Ocean has some of the least interesting harsh vocals out there.
@Kristofburger6 жыл бұрын
I actually think labeling post-metal into such a confined box is a bit obsolete these days. Agalloch are one example who to an extent did it at the same time with ISIS and Cult of Luna. Then there's Ghost Brigade, particularly their last album.
@deliciousdishes45316 жыл бұрын
@@Kristofburger yes, and Agalloch doesn't sound like Neurosis or ISIS. Hence a different genre. Ghost Brigade mixes post metal with another genre. So they're still partly post metal in the traditional sense. What's your point?
@Kristofburger6 жыл бұрын
My point is post-metal doesn't strictly equal to sludge like ISIS or Neurosis anymore, it has evolved to be seen as a combination of ANY metal and significant post-rock influence. From that standpoint, Ghost Brigade are just as "post" as ISIS, the base being doom metal of some kind.
@deliciousdishes45316 жыл бұрын
@@Kristofburger that's true if you want to define "post metal" as "metal with post rock influences". Which I would say is a stretch and kind of misses the point of genres (that being recognition and description of similar sounds). But if you want, then sure. I would say you can always talk about bands like that as combination of two genres. Also, Ghost Brigade partly fit pretty well into the sludgy post metal. There's bands like Terra Tenebrosa who I would say fit post metal as well, who sound much less like it. Agalloch is a different story, but "post black metal" is also a term that's used. So that's different from post metal in the sludgy sense.
