The Octopus Guard is the name coined by Eduardo Telles who has some amazing uses for this position. But like most things in Jiu-Jitsu, if it is good then people start to work it and come up with new amazing stuff.
While visiting Endeavor Defense & Fitness in Hilliard, Ohio for a Bladed Grappling seminar, my friend Ward Hiney showed me some of his favorite things he hits off this powerful position.
Whether it is MMA, BJJ gi or no-gi, self-defense, etc. this guard has a lot to offer. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I do this all the time from half. A little modified. Really high success rate. The guard version is sick. Thanks. I’ll try this next class.

Nicely done. Eduardo Telles is known as the Octopus Guard inventor. He has DVD instructionals on the Octopus and Turtle Guards. I trained with Eduardo Telles in San Diego. Ironically his school is near Andre Galvao's school.

@1:30 this moment is what works my mind about this technique. I supposed this particular phase requires strict timing and that's what the previous elbow smash was to set up. It's like a "rock, paper, scissors" technique.

At 1:14 the OG man has his elbow on the mat. Ditto at 2:43. However, at 3:20 his elbow is "floating." Which do you prefer, elbow on mat or elbow off mat? (Love the channel, man. Keep it up!)

The plural of octopus is Octopi
@jonathanschneider9425
@jonathanschneider9425 5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily since "octopus" is of Greek origin (not Latin) so the rule of -us turning into -i for plurals is not absolute. Still, good point.
@ClaytonJones03

technically, it's "octopodes", but in contemporary English, "octopuses" and "octopi" are acceptable

How good is this against larger Guys I’m 5 foot and pretty light
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s good because it can provide a route to the back. The best attribute a smaller person can have in bottom guard vs a larger person is to be squirmy, so for that reason, this can be a good position

This is very true in my case i am very small compared to men at my gym and have alot of success with this. Especially since i get smashed in bottom half for years. Really opena doors.

I just don’t see what’s stopping the top guy from getting on his toes and trying to knee slide or step over your open guard. Even if you get your “grip” to control the upper body, you’re not controlling their lower body. Nobody would just chill there when their opponent has their guard wide open. I could even see shifty guys hopping over the leg quickly because the the top guys arms are already in the cross body “side control” position.
@KnightJiuJitsu

He’s just pausing there to explain and instruct. The action happens faster and smoother than that. Check out some competition footage of Eduardo Telles using this gi and no gi. It’s awesome to see it hit live.

Knight Jiu-Jitsu do you have a link? I’m genuinely interested in this. It just doesn’t seem like top players will be interested in that “cross face” you suggested unless they are weak grapplers. It seems like they’d be more likely to fight for a pass since your guard is open.

It depends on the energy and circumstance. I would never suggest ignoring a Kimura opportunity and doing this instead. But sometimes this is available when the Kimura isn’t.
