Good test. I own a 21 CX30 and while I don't plan on taking it through this sort of terrain it's good to see it does decent enough. Your test is missing one element though, snow. I can tell you it does well in deep snow, even with the stock tires that aren't know for their good winter performance.

Mine will only see dirt and snow pack roads for the most part but it's good to see what it can do. The stock tires are definitely useless offroad.

It’s definitely worth taking a look at. One drive and I was sold. I couldn’t believe Mazda put the 2.5T in that little car. It definitely moves. I’ve owned a lot of cars, trucks, and suvs and this is by far one of my favorites if not my favorite. Interior quality top notch. In my opinion it’s just as nice as audi or bmw pretty much.

You guys should host a couple events up there each year. That would be awesome. You could really do it up and probably make some decent money. Bring in vendors, get some sponsors, sell your merchandise, charge a small entrance fee, provide some camping areas, and let people test their vehicles on the courses. Of course, you can video it and have some great footage. Personally, that’s what I would do in your position. Well, I’ve planted the seed. Just give me a shoutout when you have your first event 👍
@atmartens2 жыл бұрын
There’s already a event called Pacific Northwest Mudfest that’s successful and has auto journalist take part… If they wanted to make it successful they’d have to have other auto journalist have access, and the manufactures would have a reason to send their vehicles.

I love the CX-30. Seems the well made Mazda will be a leading competitor in the smaller crossover market.
@ranig28482 жыл бұрын
You guys should have a few sets of tires to fit different vehicles you’re testing - to make sure you’re testing the vehicles and not the tires. I’ve seen too many tests (including on TFL) where 2 vehicles are tested head to head with completely different sets of tires which completely beats the purpose of the test. Granted, vehicles come with standard tires, which can’t be disregarded but many manufacturers provide different tires and more so - upgrading tires to be more off road is a small investment when you want to go off-road. The tires are the most critical part to get traction - even more than any diff lock or low gear…

@lunamaria10482 жыл бұрын
I was critical of this vehicle as an off road course test choice, then was pleasantly surprised at how well the off road mode worked lol.... With impressive response like this and an engine with a genuine low range, i would like to see Mazda make a more serious 4x4 that competes with SUVs like the Defender and Grand Cherokee... I think Mazda is capable and should be more aggressive in the western 4x4 market!

The CX-30 was a good early test . . . approach angle nullified two tests, which should be fairly common in the CUV/SUV classes. Any way to make a Truth OR Dare in the Volcano Pit?

Just took possession of our 2022 CX-30 base model with the 2.0 liter and all wheel drive. @RyanRKJ2 жыл бұрын
In my experience off road, ground clearance & approach angle are the biggest issues with vehicles like this. What looks like shallow ruts, eats up ground clearance real fast, and there’s almost always a small dip that tests approach angle, even if most of the trail is smooth.
@RKmndo7 ай бұрын
One thing that a Crosstrek or Forester has over the CX-30 is aftermarket support. If companies start producing skidplates, rocker protection, high-clearance steel bumpers, offroad suspension, etc. for the Mazdas, they MIGHT catch on more among the trail crowd. Crosstreks are also now available with up to 3500lb of towing capacity, which REALLY increases the versatility/utility of such a small/efficient vehicle. A MacGregor 26X cruising powersailer weighs less than that on the trailer. The CX-30 seems to have better aesthetics, power, and non-CVT drivetrain. It has potential as a versatile CUV.
@knightwolf18723 ай бұрын
Agreed but they're targeting different buyers which influences the aftermarket support. The CX30 & CX50 are relatively new players but the aftermarket is growing for both.

Abrupt throttle, sensitive brakes and it rolls backwards every time I let off the throttle. Our 14' CX-5 FWD is the opposite. It climbs right up the ramps without rolling backwards or fear of overshooting the top.
