That was hilarious when you asked Olive if she wanted to answer any questions, and she looked at the paper, then at you, as if she was considering it for a second, then thought 'nah...' 🤣🐶

I have so many Disney books. I used to belong to this club as a kid, where I’d get a new one in the mail every month. All the classic (and not so classic) Disney stories. It was always so exciting when a new one came!

Dave (and Olive), I’m so glad that you decided to do this tag. Your responses were wonderful! I’ll bet Olive would love your childhood encyclopedia of animals! I absolutely loved the story of you reading the Grover story to the little kid on the plane. So sweet. I also loved your story of reading The Bear and the Nightingale. I read my brothers’ Hardy Boys books after I made my way through the Nancy Drew books. They were all fun. Great job on this tag! You’re a natural! Thank you for tagging me, Dave. I actually did do this one a week ago or so. But thank you! 😊

@@BookBlather I loved those series when I was a little kid. I had the Bobsey Twins and Nancy Drew, and my brothers had The Hardy Boys, but I read theirs once I finished mine. I think that the same writers actually wrote all of them. It was a corporation of writers, if I remember. correctly. I also read all of the Encyclopedia Brown books. They were great little kid detective stories too. Great stuff!

I didn't have an animal encyclopedia as such, but my favorite book was "A Bird Can Fly and So Can I." A little girl (who actually looked like me) would go from one animal to another imitating it. Oddly enough, I had a similar reaction to "The Loney. " I was expecting great things from the glowing reviews but nothing happened.

I didn't know Contact was based on a real signal, that's so cool, love the film but never read the book.
@BookBlather
@BookBlather 6 ай бұрын
I’m not sure if it was actually meant to be specifically based on the Wow signal. Jodi Foster’s character heard the signal listening with her headphones. When Ehman discovered the Wow signal, he was looking at computer printouts from a radio telescope. But I’m sure Sagan had it in mind when he wrote Contact.

The Winter Night trilogy has been on my list and that’s nice that you have such a good memory with that. Sadly, I think my daughter is graduating from superhero movies as well, but hopefully I have a little time left. If Tom Holland makes another Spider-Man movie, we’re golden! I know what you mean about the religious thing. I don’t understand why some people feel the need to take so much offense if someone does not share those exact same beliefs. Olive handled being tagged pretty well. In the Andrew Michael Hurley bibliography I generally pretend Devil's Day doesn't exist because I liked his other books. A couple years ago Netflix did an original movie called Awake starring Gina Rodriguez. It's about everyone on earth losing the ability to sleep. It's a little dopey but it is the concept you mentioned.

I’m so glad you mentioned that. I just watched the trailer, and now I remember seeing the ad for that, but I forgot about it! I’m totally going to watch that in the next day or two! I think I remember my mom reading me the same book as a child. And of course Goodnight Moon and Hungry Hungry Caterpillar. Classic kid reads. That is so disappointing about Devil’s Day! Glad you got to have your dream vacation at least despite the horrible book. Olive is looking extra sweet and sleepy today. I think she needs more treats 😂 I love her “I’m cute, what more do you want?!” face when you asked her to answer some questions 😂 “Borrowing” pick pockets?! Did they unpick pockets later? 😂. 🐕 She is staring you down more than usual here must be she is watching for treats 😆😸 I was raised Catholic and did ten years as an agnostic and went back to being Catholic because ten years of skeptical/scientific theories and other religions and philosophies didn't convince me. Neither did an ill-advised attempt to invent my own religion 😸😆 I have "No Blade of Grass" now an actual 1956 first edition, will be starting it soon 👍 To answer one of the questions - if I were going to hang out with any author it would be Dostoyevsky. Whatever would come of those hours, I am pretty sure it would be interesting 😆😸

Great responses! It's fun to hear folks ramble through an occasional tag video, so don't feel awkward about that. 😁 I didn't have animal encyclopedias, but my parents did get me a partial set of grocery store science encyclopedias. Are grocery store encyclopedias still a thing? I doubt it. 🤔 I like the Contact book and movie as well, even if I'm far more skeptical about the prospects for intelligent extraterrestrial life than I once was. Pah, can't have anything comforting, inspirational, or fun. 😏 Blind Watchmaker is one of Dawkins's better efforts, but I think he peaked with The Extended Phenotype. I used to get a bit miffed when his swarm of cheerleaders would hail Atheism Salesman Era Dawkins as a brilliant scientist when the man hadn't published any original research in decades, but I won't deny that he wrote some engaging popularizations. Outreach and education are fine things. Thanks for the video, and have a good one!
@BookBlather
@BookBlather 6 ай бұрын
At this point, I think encyclopedias are barely still a thing. I haven’t read the Extended Phenotype. Intended too, but there are several of his books I haven’t gotten to yet. I did enjoy all the ones that I’ve read though, even if he is a little too aggressive with his anti-religion at times, as well as his distaste for lawyers. 😏
@BryanM.R.-prionic1
@BryanM.R.-prionic1 6 ай бұрын
@@BookBlatherInteresting. I hadn't picked up on the anti-lawyer thing. Sure, I'd noticed that Dawkins's brand of atheism tends to emit a distinctively Anglican bouquet with a particular disdain for Papists and other "lesser" sorts. But perhaps that's only to be expected, what with his colonial African childhood complete with "loyal family servant," his opportunity to grace old Oxford with the presence of yet another Dawkins male, and his friends and protégés who didn't inherit their delicately curated DNA to NOT be called "Viscount," thank you very much. Ahem, but anyway, my point is that I thought that "type" grudgingly recognized Law as an acceptable career. You know, perhaps for those non-inheriting, wastrel, and/or drunkard sons. Because at least they wouldn't be stooping to the life of some common Cheapside tradesman (gasp). Okay, I think I just got the mean pettiness out of my system for at least this decade! 😂 I really do enjoy Dawkins's evolution books. Honestly, I do! 😁 And Matt Ridley's (5th Viscount Ridley's 😉) science books are worth a look too, particularly "The Red Queen."
