Uh, huh huh huh ... you said "fleshes." That was cool! ☺️ By the way, if either if you hasn't seen "The Death of Stalin," I highly recommend it. I watched it yesterday as part of the Red September event, and I had no clue that something with that title would be so (deliberately) hilarious. Great cast. Great production. And again, the blasted thing had me braying like a jackass throughout. 😂

We could do a casual buddy read or do live as well. Let me know if you are keen. Dark Matter has been recommended to me a number of times, will definitely give it a read in future. Great video! 🐕🐕

@BryanM.R.-wt9eb 4 күн бұрын
Hey, Cliff. I don't really like to shill for books, particularly a ridiculous doorstopper series, but I'll make a small exception by sharing my experience here. I read Gardens of the Moon many, many years ago and had a pretty "meh" reaction. It's not that I found it horribly difficult as it's reputed by some; it really just struck me as so-so. I only started the second volume months later because I happened to grab it as I was headed out the door to an optometrist appointment or something. I'm glad I did. Turns out there is a huge quality jump between the first and second books, and that second book knocked me absolutely flat, one storyline particularly so. It was enough to hook me into reading the rest of the blasted series. So yeah, I typically roll my eyes when devotees of these shelf bending series insist that you have to invest in multiple volumes to get to the "good stuff," but this is one awkward case where I actually encourage folks to give the second book a try before permanently bailing. 😊

I read _When the Sleeper Wakes_ last year and was disappointed as well. The central character recognized the injustices in the society but there was no solution but to wage war against the existing authority, then when that is replaced, wage war against the new authority, with no end in sight. For Rocket Summer, I read _The Legion of Space_ by Jack Williamson - a pulpy adventure that was much too “Perils of Pauline” for me. On the other hand, I had a delightful reread of _Time and Again_ by Clifford D. Simak. This is the story of a man who returns from the mysterious Cygni 61 system after being dead for twenty years. He lands his nonfunctioning, leaky spaceship back on Earth, reactivates his internal organs, and plans to reveal a mind boggling truth about conscious life in the galaxy. But time travelers from his future are out to stop him.

You are a trooper for sticking with books that really aren't getting better. I saw Vin's video on Red Shirts, and I said there that I have been wondering about Scalzi, about whether he's someone I would like to read. I really enjoyed Rocket Summer. I did follow the decades. I read some Bradbury and some H.G. Wells and some Ursula K. LeGuin, so it was pretty great all around. I have to tell you, I love when you ask Olive a question about the book you're discussing. She always looks like she's considering the question and getting ready to answer you. You have some really BIG things on your table now.
