The US Office had writers that were, frankly, complete geniuses and actors that could take it knock it out of the park. They managed to secure super unique, super talented people and it ended up being lightning in bottle. You can't force something like that, those things end up happening by chance

It was mostly bad, however the female boss does a pretty strong job with the material she is given, the lesbian flag joke with Stevie the warehouse manager was funny and the whole Danny episode was realistic and tragic and pretty hilarious in parts. HR manager stares at the camera way too often and the show all most preaches and promotes that Human Resources is the way and good strong dependable men are needed to calm down erratic women - the irony of this theme when the show is pushing diversity cracked me up 😂

Don't apologise bro. Fellow Australian here, couldn't agree more with ya breakdown. "comedy is subjective" isn't even an excuse in my opinion. There are definitely "objective" parts of comedy that simply work and don't work. you listed half of them, but things like timing & character building are a somewhat proven recipe, and this is absent of a lot of those basic building blocks that hold it together. Biggest miss for me was the lack of "australian-ness" of it, like you said. I've never even seen an office like this lol. Nice breakdown! keep it up dude

This is honestly a lesson studios need to learn. If you're going to knowingly name a show after a piece of intellectual property, we're going to compare! And even on it's own in isolation (which is hard to imagine), I don't think its a particularly good show. Shows like Frontline do the whole concept 100 times better imo.

I will slightly disagree with you about Hannah not liking Borat 2 as her character. Michael in the US Office loved Borat so that's probably why the showrunners chose that film as a choice for her. Do you think Michael Scott, someone who didn't know how to use Powerpoint, could figure out Amazon Prime? Lol

It should have been more episodes though that's another problem with the series, no time to breathe and develop and that makes every episode worse. And I agree, first episode is definetly the worst out of all of them, not a good way to start a series!

Oddly I think Swift and Shift Couriers actually nails Aussie Workplaces in its over the top early 2000s way. It has all layers of job roles, the petty workplace politics, workplace drama, people doing dodgey shit you name it. I can imagine many people hating it as well it was made in the early 2000s so it goes hard on its language, slurs and so on but it is still hilarious in how grounded it can be despite being completely over the top. The Office Australia seems like it was drawn up in some corporate boardroom and trying to please the yanks more so that make an Australian show for Australians.

I'm not going to pretend that this is a particularly good show but I do think it deserves another season to see if it can find it's uniquely Australian voice. Doesn't anyone remember how much the first season of the US version sucked because they were trying to copy the UK version and it just didn't work because Americans have a completely different type of humour. Especially when there have already been two well known versions of this series (as well as 13 international versions you've probably never heard of from places like Canada, India and Germany) it's probably going to take at least one season to figure out what does and doesn't work for this show specifically.
@hessflix2 ай бұрын
Hahaha not sure why you're implying that I haven't heard of international countries, I've been very fortunate to do a fair a bit of international travel in my life which I don't take for granted. As I've said in other comments and in the video, I would be interested to see a second season if they went down that path of making it more uniquely Australian. I just have very little faith that they will make a course correction and do that. I personally really enjoyed the first season of the US office (although that was me watching it before seeing the UK version). I would have thought though the Australian writers could potentially have gone in a bit of a better direction with the first season.

Dude, just say it… that female protagonist just isn’t funny. That’s pretty much it. Saw the first episode, and I think it does have potential, the main character just needs to have “it”, but she does not. That’s unfortunate, because there actually are funny women, very few, but they do exist.

I wouldn't say it's the same kind of cringe that the UK and US versions evoke (and between those two shows it's sometimes different again). The cringe/awkwardness of the originals is carefully constructed and controlled by the writers, but I don't think that's the case here with the Australian one, as jokes or moments that I think the viewer was meant to enjoy or laugh at resulted in cringe. I think there's also a difference between cringing when you're not enjoying comedy versus comedy designed to make you cringe in a humorous way

@hessflix2 ай бұрын
It seems like it's definetly trending that way which is sad! The older Aussie films are awesome, but maybe the creators are becoming more detached now from every day life. Hopefully we can still get some great comedy in the future and those funding projects can learn from this!

what a headache that group of mates would give me. I bet every last one is a tiring critique like yourself who went in looking only at the negative aspects. You can find the jokes not funny, but at 7:50 you outright miss the joke which is really quite obvious (who likes borat 2 over the original borat?). It wasn't a vehicle to promote a film from 4 years ago that already saw huge promotion back then - if anything its a slight dig at an amazon product. I'm assuming it wasn't completely your fault, and you probably missed the joke because one of your 7 apes thought he was clever for saying "borat 2 amazon film. the office au on amazon! self advertising". I think the show is mediocre/ok as far as comedies go. It's well acted and well shot and the situations are comparable in quality to the US office - though lacking quality jokes. I really think we need another season of this show before we go saying whether or not it's plain awful. Comedies like this generally take a while to find their stride -god knows the American season 1 wasn't at all comparable to the UK - but with time each character found a unique and interesting voice. There is a decent frame set up and I'd like to see what they can do with a second season because if you could see past a room of mates looking to tear it down, you may have seen potential as well.
@kashthrills3 ай бұрын
the correct number of seasons of a series of the office is 2.33 (the 0.33 being a christmas special) there is no space for wasted time (also borat 2 isn't a bad enough movie for that joke to be funny, and it's feasible that the original borat might be someone's favourite film - so liking borat 2 isn't really a very bold or funny character choice, if it's not cross promotion then it's a first draft placeholder joke that really could have been punched up in the writers room)
@thehobbyshop53063 ай бұрын
That's a lot of word salad to defend something that's simply not funny at all.
@hessflix2 ай бұрын
Hahaha mate, I mentioned that I watched the show in a throw away line and that's what you took from it? It was only two close friends of mine, and one of them had never actually watched any of the previous Office Series, so he definetly had an open mind. We were there hoping to enjoy it and to give it a fair chance. As an Australian too, I want our film and television products to do well, and it doesn't give me any pleasure making such a negative review about an Australian show. But in my opinion, it really wasn't good. I really couldn't disagree more that the sitations are comparable in quality to the US Office. The channel Cinewhirl did a video on the show too and they point this out really well. E.g when Lizzie steals the forklift - she just drives around in it for a few seconds in the carpark....? The big pranks on Lizzie from Nick is wearing a t-shirt with her face on it...? The US office would have handled those ideas so much better and took them to an extreme or put some kind of better comedic spin on them. I also disagree in general with people who dislike the first season of the US office, personally I actually really liked it, but that's coming from me who watched the US version before the UK version. I agree it would be interesting to see a second season for this Australian iteration, but only if they tried some different things, and made some significant changes to their approach to the comedy in the show. Your comment was funnier to me than this whole show (genuinely and thank you for writing it). Me and the apes still had a fun night.
