Pam's way of doing it, i.e. introducing herself by name, humanizes the person calling and speaking and makes any further interaction with the receptionist or anyone else in the office much more comfortable and casual. Honestly, I think it's one of the main reasons why Scranton was able to keep so many customers due to company-acknowledged great customer service, the first person you're talking to is a human!
