@0005wai3 жыл бұрын
Well I knew right away he was home wrecker from first watch in season 1-2. And I hated him from there. More like I find him really creepy from the start. Because trust me when you are in relationship with someone and there’s this one guy who calls himself “a friend” but always trying to be around you and being touchy with you it’s freaking disgusting even if that guy is attractive. Because that’s just a disgusting behaviour from a person who don’t know when to give up and trying to get his way without caring about other person relationship status. It doesn’t feel ok to be around people like that kind of creep. And of course all his dumb pranks and the way he thinks he’s good guy when he’s just some slacker and loser also annoy the heck out of me. And also Pam, my god the fact that she doesn’t even know who she wanna sleep and flirting with another guy while she’s in relationship annoys me too.

I honestly dont see what u guys see here. Jim wouldn't love Pam if she didnt love him back, which she did all along, even while being engaged to Roy. He kissed her but she kissed him back. There was smth always there and they both knew it. Regarding the job in Filadelphia, he had been in the same shit job for almost a decade, only Pam made him stay, but life isnt just marriage and he wanted more professional fulfilment than what dunder miflin gave him. You can argue that he did it the wrong way, but he thought he could make it work and he was determined to do it. Maybe he was thinking about himself first, but on the long run, it would also help his family. He's a person, he makes mistakes, doesnt mean he's a jerk and a "villian". If thats the criteria, most of us would be assholes too to be fair
@JosephHMama5 жыл бұрын
I mean, Pam's liking him was a result of him flirting with her all day every day while she was engaged. We only justify this because Roy is a bit of a jerk. If we want to appeal to Jim being a flawed human being, though, then we have to do the same for Roy, and Roy is really one of the most human characters on the show. And once you get married, and especially when you're married with children, you should prioritize your family. Don't have a family if you don't want to prioritize them. "Gambling" (which was the most apt description to describe what he did) with your family's financial security like that is selfish and cowardly. Abandoning them and moving to a different city, even worse. If I remember correctly, he also still took a full-time salary from DM during this time, even though he was never there. He's also a major prick to Dwight, who is annoying at worst but a great and loving person not-so-far beneath the surface. Yeah, we see putting someone's stuff in gelatin or in a vending machine as funny pranks, but those are actually really horrible things to do to someone, and if Jim wasn't charismatic and charming we'd call it bullying.

I don't see anything wrong with the prank. Lastly, Pam should have been supportive of Athleed. (side note she's the worst after maternity). Jim's job is a dead end, probably not going to last till they retire, and he loves the new one. Surely she could have lasted a little longer.

I'm late to the party here (i hate Jim AND pam) but I'd like to just add why i hate Jim so much too. He's pretty terrible in most episodes but the ones where I literally have to skip them entirely is where he becomes a co-manager (the meeting & the promotion). He completely undermines Michael - inserts himself into private conversations, puts David Wallace on speaker phone, is aggressive with Michael, his colleagues and even random members of the public (you only need to see the deleted scenes for Scott's Tots for this) and remember Michael THINKS that they're friends when they've started separately that they absolutely detest the thought of spending time with him. Jim is jealous of michael's skills as a salesman and becomes so petty that he actually could have injured Michael in Koi Pond.. Michael calls him out on going over his head and Jim won't take it. Saying that he's a necessity and that Michael can't make a decision on his own - whilst Jim is also not able to make a decision (what does a bean mean?) His flawed belief that he could do the job better than Michael is why he got the job in the first place. Scott's tots (and I understand it's decisive) is one of my favourite episodes because Jim gets his. Well kindof. I hate that there are no repercussions and David Wallace is still pally with Jim. Dwight and Ryan's diabolical plan for the win. Again. I HATE Jim the entire way through from 1-9, but here is where i find him the most detestable. Actually just coming back to this - I i also hate hate hate him (and Pam) in customer survey. He takes Andy's mug. Which is actually so gross to me. (Shown later in the series when he's in Philadelphia Jim is shown to be an absolute slob so I wouldn't doubt that Jim just couldn't be bothered to clean his mug and found Andy's clean one.) And Pam wont let Andy use her mug whilst shes in new york. Let that sink in. Shes in new York and she could have taken her favourite mug with her, but Andy cant use it whilst her fiance uses his... Make them being "nice" people make sense to me. Yet in a later episode when Stanley equally obliviously drinks from Jim's mug - Jim is super offended. (The episode where Kevin dresses as Phyllis and Andy is naked can't remember the title right now). I also hate how aggressive Jim and Pam are with Michael. Remember when Stanley talked back aggressively "Did I Stutter?" and Toby wanted him fired.... Where was Toby when Jim was being aggressive with everyone?? Ryan should have fired Jim when he got the chance. Hitler, bin laden, & Jim - id shoot Jim twice.
@RealityCheck6T94 ай бұрын
There being no repercussions is what the show's all about and it's what makes it so inferior to the UK original. While it has many hilarious moments, it's basically a cartoon. It's exasperating seeing Michael not only not get fired for his many violations but actually rewarded. Whatever Jim gets away with pales in comparison.

I watched the show like a year ago for the first time ever and recognized Jim as an asshole bully really quick. Back in 2005 this wouldn't have been as obvious but he basically spends the entire show abusing an autistic guy (Dwight). There are many moments that show he's a sack of shit. Perhaps the most obvious is when Andy comes back from anger management and asks people to call him Drew and Jim just refuses. For no other reason than he knows it will drive Andy nuts and that makes him feel powerful. Or lying at the dinner party to try to ditch Pam and leave her by herself because he's so lacking of human feeling that he literally can't wait for his food. Anyone who was bullied as a kid instantly recognizes Jim Halpert is a bully.

People root and relate to Jim because he's a relatable guy. He's flawed, and that's what makes him believable. Like a real actual person. If he was always a good guy then nobody would care and he'd be a boring character. Complex characters are what makes The Office so good.
@Dummerbrella9874 жыл бұрын

Complex characters portrayed as the "moral compass" by the producers is bad. Because it perpetuates the already toxic idea that you can be a dick, just like Jim, but if you're attractive and charming enough, you get away with it. A fine line between friendly pranks and straight up being an asshole, and unfortunately, Jim doesn't walk that line, he zigs zags. Then the show pretends he's nearly always in the right. And we're supposed to like a narcissist like that? Eww. I'm glad my psych classes are already coming in handy. The amount of people defending jim is honestly... The episode where he was going over every one of his pranks on Dwight and how he was shocked was how I felt watching the show again, except, *MUCH* longer and more painful. He used Karren to make Pam jealous and he lied him himself about liking her and kissed Pam when she was engaged and she said she didn't like or even love him, even if this wasn't true, *this is still asult* . He doesn't care about his wife and kids. The show makes him look good by surrounding him with wierd and odd characters making him look like the good guy even though he's *NOT* . He makes things he likes that Pam doesn't like seem as if it's not a big deal. A few are putting in 10k into a company and buying a *house* without her knowledge. Hes a minipulater and a narcissist. The reason most people like him is because of how the camera portrays him. Some of his actions are so odd. For example, driving Andy to punching a hole in the wall and buying things on valentine's day posing as Bob Vance to make Pam jealous. Who the actual *FUK* does this? People see a hero and someone to look up to because hes the "normal" one. The relatable person to laugh with at the silly and goofy things that the office workers get into even though we ignore that hes the main problem. Hes more messed up than everyone else hes just a better lier. Pam is the mindless sponge that sucks up whatever Jim does. She is an unlikable person who has almost no good traits and who only follows his lead. He only wants her because of looks, doing what he does (pranks, love, and even work) and jealousy of Roy. He truly is a villain.
@earthling034 жыл бұрын
When I first heard Jim saying Pam gets him get through the day and Jim is a very emotional needy man, while he was pulling out one of his way out- of- the line pranks on Andy. I wondered is she your crutch and if she is that means you are not completely within yourself. And if you are not complete without her you are not going to be complete with her. There's a never something as the ONE, there's always someone but not the one and all the rom-coms put these stupid ideals in our heads are just delusional.

I thought I was the only person who didn't like Jim. I'm seeing people make the excuse that Jim being flawed is what makes him so relevant, but that's not why I don't like him. I like Michael, dwight and even Ryan as characters. What I dont like about Jim is that he pretty much gets away with doing what he wants because he gets people to like him and usually when people do call him out on it, he manipulates it against them. I guess that's what irritates me about him, he's not intentionally flawed to show hes human, hes a manipulator who's projected throughout the series as the hero and with the other characters, they're negative traits are shown plainly. I'm not saying he doesn't have positive qualities, as hes always there for dwight, Michael and Pam when they need it, and I actually do consider times where he kisses pam and admits to Karen flawed human moments I can respect about the character. The thing is, if Jim simply called Dwight out on his bad behavior, and left it at that, he'd absolutely be the hero! I wouldn't say jim sucks. Yes some of his pranks go too far, I will say that, but the main reason he pranks Dwight is because Dwight can too often be full of himself, selfish, demanding, and a kiss ass. Jim is messing with Dwight to sort of give him a taste of his own medicine in a way, if that makes sense? Since Dwight are all the things i listed, jim puts him in his place sometimes. Though some pranks are over the top and can be considered bullying. I remeber an episode where jim walks up to Dwight without him noticing and when jim calls for Dwight he flips out and cowers (Idk of I spelt that right). Jim was selfish to date karen even though he still loved pam but the stamford branch was already moving to scranton so I dont think he used Karen to make pan jealous. Jim did kind of ghost pam in a way when kares was in their presence but i think it was him trying to get over or at least suppress his feelings for pam. And lastly the Philly situation. Jim talked to pan about the investment and they agreed on 5-10k. So pam knew that's the ballpark him was looking at to invest. Pam handled that horribly. She was rude as hell instead of having a simple talk with jim. All in all this video was well put together but I dont agree with your points on jim. Great video though! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this and I appreciate that. You should continue with these video essays, would love to hear your thoughts on other topics! Keep up the good work man 💚

I don't agree with the qualities you listed about Dwight but he can be a lot to handle for other reasons. Part of this though is due to Dwight suffering from a lot of stress in his life, caused by the fact that he actually works hard, is loyal to his superiors, and has to take care of Mose. (The show never says this but I would hypothesize that Mose suffers from a mental disorder (maybe autism) that causes him to require extra care. I would also say that Dwight suffers from a slight anger issue. Even disregarding all of these things about Dwight, Jim's constant, increasingly severe, and mentally tormenting pranks are not warranted just by Dwight being annoying sometimes. Edit: Dwight also reveals in the episode where he's trying to figure out who was taking an anxiety pill that he suffers from severe anxiety.

When he stopped Dwight from entering the room when Robert was about to tank the Sabre store idea and fire him Jim saved Dwight’s career the one thing that is nearest and dearest to Dwight. Tell me, would a man who’s soul purpose was to torment Dwight do that, and if I seem to recall correctly Jim also dropped athlead after he realized how much it was hurting Pam. When he told Pam how he felt it was his last ditch effort before he had to fold, since it didn’t pay off he had to leave, he found Karen and tryed to make things work but because he got transferred back to Scranton e felt closer to his first love and pulled away from Karen. It is not his fault that he was transferred back. The house was a sweet surprise and if Pam didn’t like it Jim would have backed out of it just like he backed out of athlead.all in all he did do some bad things but I think what he did in the aforesaid mentions redeems him as a good person. If you can only see bad in people you Will never find a good person. If you diss agree then I couldn’t care less.

Paul Rose so basically I can harass someone for years and then do a few nice things and be off the hook? Nice to know

@@death3678 Dwight wasn't a blameless innocent soul and Jim was clearly just flawed but not terrible

I think you'll find that it was PAM who convinced Jim to go back and "save" Dwight. If Jim hadn't of spoken to her. Dwight would have been fired. Jim only thinks about himself.

He kisses Pam because he has the chance to go to a new job and he decides to shoot his shot to see what happens and if he should stay. Then he dates Karen and they end up having to move to Scranton and despite still having feelings for Pam I don't think that he ever used Karen to make Pam jealous. He just wanted things to work with Karen but eventually when faced with the chance to move onto a new life with a new girl he decides he wants Pam instead because the timing for them was finally right. I don't think he used Katie to make Pam jealous either. Then when it comes to Athlead, it was something he was finally passionate about and he wanted to live the perfect life above anything else, but when what he wanted went against what Pam wanted he ultimately decided that she was more important. Jim can definitely be a jerk and unlikable and obviously flawed, but I think OP focuses on all the wrong things about this character because he doesn't fully understand him.
