I think it's better that the UK is much shorter. I don't see the appeal of having hundreds of episodes, which lead to alot of hit or miss episodes. With less episodes the writers can get the jokes they want in and not drag it on for 5 years too long

@@JaKingScomez obviously they are both different and good in their own ways. Many people from the US miss sarcasm or jokes that are more subtle. That's why the US version changed to be more fast paced and upbeat with a more sitcom feeling. They just don't get British humor like we do. Every time I've watched someone from the US react to British humor, they always say aloud and explain the joke they've just laughed at, like every time they have to explain what they've had to figure out. If the joke isn't in front of them to laugh at, it's instantly less funny for them (stereotypically though none the less true)

I think that Micheal is framed in a different way because we learn a lot about his childhood. He remembers every unhappy moment and talks about them. His mother accidentally kissed his butt, he had many miserable birthdays. In the show he’s trying to regain his childhood. He slowly ages from a 5 year old kid into an adult ready to move on in his relationship and also to move away from his childhood. Micheal says that he has always lived in Scranton and it’s only until Holly has to deal with serious issues (her father and mother aging) that he grows up. He leaves his friends behind, he leaves his old life behind. Micheal craves to be liked because when he was little he had countless friendship mishaps. Micheal shows a video of a T.V show where he was featured and when his younger self is asked what he wants he says friends. His own grandmother left him alone for a new friend. Micheal is somewhat aware of himself. He can switch from his camera personality (cheerful, naive, good natured) to his more realistic version where he is an adequate regional manager. When Micheal is on a sale he talks seriously and always has a plan. Micheal also wants to be famous, that’s why he plays it up for the cameras. He tried to act more funny so he comes across as the “cool” boss. He wants a big break.

I have to be honest, I resisted the US adaptation of The Office for a long time because I had such a fond memory of Gervais' version and such an affectionate nostalgia. When I finally got around to watching Carrell's version I found myself absolutely adoring it. I think both are brilliant examples of each culture's comedy at its best.

Wow. I never laughed out loud once at the US office, cringed many times , and saw almost every joke before it happened. UK Office I laughed out loud, cried, smiled, reflected on my life, and happily rewatched it three times. Gervais said it took him and Merchant one month to write 30mins of script. Whereas to churn out a tired sitcom for nine years, I wouldn't be surprised they write for one week to make a full show for the US Office. It's like comparing Macdonald's to a Gordon Ramsay meal

Or that you hate anything American? dk, but what I do know is that It's obvious you went into the US office not wanting to like it, so you ended up not liking it even though it's quality. The UK/US office's reminds me of the Messi/Ronaldo phenomena. Everyone has a preference to whose better, most appreciate both for their objective greatness, but a small toxic minority hate one because they absolutely adore the other and their 'prejudice' cements them in delusion. Maybe the US version is not your cup of tea, but if you go into it wanting to have a laugh (which should be the mentality for watching any comedy) you will not be disapointed

The US version yeah the first few was copied then they made it their own the actors was more entertaining even if it was copied. A lot of the decent UK shows that the US copied that have made shit 1 Inbetweeners 2 Shameless But I can only say that the US version of the office is miles better it shows that by how many episodes they had. UK office had 2 series of approx 9-10 episodes before it stopped being aired US office had 9 series of approx 19 episodes per series.

I think you kind of missed it when comparing David and Michael... They are much more similar than you make it out be.. One of the things that makes us stick with Michael is that even though he is insufferable... we all can see that Michael genuinely cares people and is actually really good at an essential part of his job... The way Michael views the office is like a family and even though he does and says awful things to them, he always finds his way back to the sentiment that he love them as family... Also he’s a terrific salesman.. he’s not just some incompetent fool running around doing God knows what... we see this for the first time in “The Client” when he excellently closes the massive deal for Dunder Mifflin that prevents downsizing at the Scranton branch... So really.. they are very similar and I’d probably venture to say, we see more of that humane side in Michael than we ever do in David in their respective versions

There are two moments that show michael does very good job at managing those people. 1. When Jim tries to make common birthday for everyone on one day and fails. He tells that to Michael who then says that he tried that many years ago but its impossible. 2. When the entire office waits for news if Dunder Mifflins goes bankrupt and they're all fired or not. Michael comes up with some game. After a while Jim tries to calm down Michael because he's scared about his job too. Michael then stops playing his funny character and being completly serious says: "Shut up and let them have their stupid game. That's all they got". It shows that michael really knows what he's doing. And that stupid, funny guy is just a character that he plays for his colleagues

Triple A It gets amazing, stick with it. Seasons 3 is one of the funniest things I've ever watched. UK was good, but hasn't aged all that well. The US version was incredible at times, but the last 2 seasons weren't quite as good. Overall. UK: 8.2/10 US: 8.8/10

I actually cant get into The Office UK. It's too drab, too depressing, and Ricky Gervais has always rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, I recognize that the show is great, but The Office US is my taste. It's cheerful, happy and hopeful. Michael makes me feel good. He's a socially awkward weirdo, and I like that. Is it cringy? Sometimes, but he manages to be so likeable I don't care. That isn't even getting started on how much more I love Jim and Pam.

I've never seen The Office UK (and after this video I kind of want to), but I'd just like to pitch in about something about The Office USA. One of my favorite aspects about the show is how it can be a colorful ride filled with laughter and jokes and whatnot, but every now and then there's actual serious moments that show these characters in a new light. We see them being genuine, caring, and just human in general. This personally allows me to connect with the characters and enjoy them even more than before

You probably illustrated my biggest gripe with US Office all the characters are arbitrarily likeable in an attempt to make them more human and relatable I find them less human because of it, What puts people of the UK office is how cold distant and blunt the characters are adds to the reality documentary approach, I can relate to that so much more having worked in that environment it comes across as more realistic and as such more humorous.

I appreciate your comparison between Michael and David, but I don't really understand why you went so in depth into a scene from the first episode of both shows. You said it yourself that the US version quickly adapted and changed drastically from the British one, yet you compare a scene from the very first episode? The shows are very different, and while I do prefer the American version mostly because I like the characters better, I know they're both good in their own separate ways.

It wasnt my intention to make the UK show look better, I just wanted to highlight the problems of straight-up remaking. With you analysis of Michael I’d say you were right about him being a little more extra than David, but you described David exactly how Michael is in the US version too. He says and does racist and sexist stuff on accident trying to funny or connect with his coworkers too. He also is a man that wants friends but has none. They actually show this in an episode where he goes to an improv class and messes it up and nobody likes him so he crashes his coworkers party that everyone in the office but him was invited to. He also shows great moments like David playing the guitar. He does incredible business deals out of nowhere and it shows that he is an actual competent and good businessman. I feel like you didn’t do a good enough analysis of Michael seeing how you even said that you needed your girlfriends opinion on it. I’m not trying to be rude. I’m just giving constructive criticism.

I can understand why he didn't waste too much time on him - in most respects MIchael is just another american sitcom character, waiting for a laugh track so the audience will know what to do. Rather than comedic though, David is more cringingly tragic than comedic, something an american show would never have the confidence to do I suspect (that is probably simply because US network shows survive on ratings while BBC shows really don't) - David shows just enough positives that you know he could be better but tragically never really will be. Much of UK humour is about pathos, rather than slapstick.

@@yeezy7367 He's a good character by the standards of his genre, no doubt, but what the OP is saying is that the US wouldn't tolerate a character who didn't have an arc and closure like David. They wouldn't see the humour in a character who people genuinely hate and never really gets better. A lot of UK comedy sort of keeps you on the edge where you hope people will get better, but you are ultimately more satisfied by the fact they do not. It makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time, it seems more true to life. Michael's arc is great in the opposite way, giving closure and catharsis. But while 'generic' is a bit harsh, that's sort of what all good sitcom characters have, so he's not really different than a lot of others. But you could certainly argue the same about David and characters like Mark and Jeremy from Peep Show- the UK is just as conventional, just in a different way.

A lot of the things that were said about David could be said about Micheal. The way he thinks of himself as a funny guy and often makes jokes that turn out for an awkward situation. He even said once that everyone says that he's the funniest guy in the office. Micheal is as you described David but with the childish twist as well. Also Micheal is revealed to be a good hockey player, similar to David's guitar. I'd say that the Office US captures the same sense of realism in the first few seasons.

I'll admit that I did not have a full knowledge of Michael's character and his entire story. With David Brent there's only 13 episodes which a lot easier to watch than 139. I probably watched about 60 episodes of the Office US, ending a few episodes after Jim and Pam starting dating. I felt it was fitting to stop there since we're presented with the same scenario (Tim and Dawn) at the end of the UK Office. From what I saw, I think there are definitely similarities between the two. However Michael strikes me as a more likable person, and a happier one. With David I get this insanely strong feeling, like buried below all this facade is a man that is scared, lonely, and doesn't know to escape. This is simply what I, and the two people I asked, observed and felt from the show. I know I missed things, but I'm just a young dude making videos for fun.

I’d say the two characters are very much the same, but that the difference is in the lense that you see each of the characters through. David is seen in a pessimistic, hopeless light, whereas Michael is seen much more hopefully. He’s lonely, sad and desperate but you have hope that maybe he’ll be okay one day.

I’m not sure if it’s better written. All the characters are really boring. Brent is funny sometimes but comes across as a douche. M Scott is goofy but likable. Jim and Pam are charismatic, and all the characters outside of the main bunch are quirky but likable. I don’t like watching a show where I don’t like any of the characters. It was tough getting thru all 14 episodes of UK, where getting thru 9 seasons (24 episodes each) were enjoyable

Okay guys let me make something transparent. This video is obviously influenced by my personal opinion. I'm not some mega famous film critic, I'm just a guy trying to have fun on KZbin. I do happen to find the UK Office more impressive. That doesn't mean I hate the American version, or think it's dumbed down. They each have a different type of comedy. Was I the most qualified person to make a video on this matter? No, but as I said earlier, I'm just doing this for fun. People were interested in seeing my thoughts and I was interested in the topic. To me, Michael is tragically and unhealthily attached to Todd. I haven't watched enough of The Office (UK) to make a judgment of which (if either) is *better* but I prefer The Office (US). Michael has one of the best series arcs of any character I've seen.

It's the UK office for me. Every episode is just crammed with attention to detail, tiny little things that just add to the moments. David Brent is the most multi layered character in sitcom history. It was also brave to try comedy of that style. The American office is a good sitcom, one of the best of it's era. I just feel like it's a compromise and too like just any other sitcom at times. It also went on for at least two seasons too long. It's an impressive achievement nonetheless.

The two shows function very differently. The UK version was never meant to stretch out over a long period of time; it has a specific beginning and a more planned ending, whereas the US version stretched out for almost a decade (it was definitely milked). This makes the UK version more of a neat story, whereas the US version is multiple separate instances strung together and written as the show runs (like a Friends kind of situation). In this way, the US version caters more to its fan base, whereas the UK version is like a long movie. This is evident in the fact that nearly every episode of the US version has an uplifting ending, whereas, in the UK version, the uplifting part is in only the very last episode.

Because the uk office wasn’t as long as the US office and this video is comparing them, helps to compare with similar plots. He said several times in the video that the US one went on to do its own thing. UK only had 3 seasons and 6 episodes per season. US had 9 seasons and like 20-30 eps per season, because Americans love to drag and milk their good shows. UK always keep their sitcoms nice and short, barring a few.

What I find interesting is that it looks like they split David's character. Michael is sort of a joke as a musician with his ukelele but Andy was incompetent while being a great musician.

There’s a lot of arguing in the comments. Both shows are objectively great. 10/10 shows. Both shows are very different. If you started by watching the US version you have to strip yourself of everything you know heading into the UK version. Don’t look at Gareth and think of Dwight. Appreciate his character for his character. It’s so important to be open minded and patient when transitioning to the UK version because the style is so dramatically different. Imo the UK version is better but if you prefer the US version that is a perfectly fine opinion providing you actually gave the UK version a shot before writing it off because it’s different to the US version of comedy.

For me, the British version is better. Not necessarily funnier, but better. The American version relies heavily on physical humour and jokes for its laughs, whereas the British version never set out to be funny in the obvious sense. The humour comes from seeing something all of us who have worked in offices recognise. The frustrated characters, feeling trapped in a tedious job. The silences only punctuated by printers and fax machines. Sounds boring, but I think British comedies pay much more attention to the characters and how the audience relates to them, rather then just seeking to makes us laugh. The American version reverts to type and becomes a quickfire gag reel in the style of most American comedies, with little attention to character depth and full focus on jokes.

It really does come down to preference, as cliché as it is. I really loved the true mockumentary style of the Office UK. It's supposed to be a realistic portrayal of the tedium of office culture. That's why you're not supposed to always laugh during the episodes. It's a lot more about people being stuck doing something they don't want to do in a place they don't want to be. In a lot of ways, you can't just watch a single episode of the Office UK if you want to really want to get the most out of it; the progression of the characters is largely why the show is held in such regard. At the end of the show, all main characters (except for Gareth) have truly changed and become happy. You need to watch the arc of the characters to get the most out of it. The fact that there are only 13 episodes of the Office UK means that interactions in each episode have way more repercussions on the following episode than anything in the Office US. There's simply no time for filler when you only have 13 episodes. In general, that's a massive difference between British comedy shows and American ones: British ones generally know when to call it quits. You can argue that some have quit too soon, like Fawlty Towers, The Office, Extras, The Young Ones or Inbetweeners. In retrospect, however, this raises the episodes and the series to a higher level simply because the shows are so condensed. Imagine Fawlty Towers lasting 7 seasons. How often could we really have seen John Cleese act like an absolute madman before it got tedious? One of the only British comedies that was able to do a lot of seasons and stay great was Peep Show, and that was just because the premise of that show and the chemistry between Robert Webb and David Mitchell was that fantastic. All this makes that British comedies skim along the edges of tragedy and drama so much closer than most American comedies. The only American comedy I can think of that is able to transformatively merge tragedy, drama, and comedy is Louie, and I think that's off the air for good now. Those episodes where he was training to be the next Letterman had some of the funniest scenes I've ever seen. It does mean that specific episodes in the Office US are a lot more rewatchable than any specific episode from the Office UK. You can enjoy a lot of episodes from the Office US without necessarily knowing all the nuances of the characters and their relationships with each other. It's a lot more obvious and played up for laughs. That's not a bad thing at all; in this case, in fact, it's a good thing because it means you can essentially watch the Office US in any order you want and still enjoy it a lot. With the Office UK, you can't really do that. If you want to get the most out of it, you have to watch the whole thing, in order. Or at least a season's worth of episodes per time you watch it. So yeah, whichever you prefer is the one that is better. It's a bad comparison to make because the shows ended up being so completely distinct from one another. I think a better comparison between shows would be the Office UK vs Trailer Park Boys. Those are two shows that have a lot more in common (even though TPB is obviously way more over the top). Conclusion: The Office US has more rewatchable episodes and is more outlandishly funny without being tied to character interaction, the Office UK has a much more satisfying overall arc and more realistic interactions between characters that drives the comedy. In the Office UK, the humor is the tragedy. In the Office US, the humor is the comedy.
