In Rick's own words: "I'm a musician, I'm supposed to be poor. So, I put every dime I made back into buying guitars." Some people may think a lot of those guitars are ugly but, they were made to be unique, not pretty. For a man with over 400 vintage and rare guitars in his collection, I think everyone of them would be worth owning. With that, I say good job, Rick. Congrats on living your life the way you wanted to and have been able to for the past 40 plus years.

Rick has been a player in the vintage market since before there really was a vintage market I think he has had more bursts and V's than anyone back when a real burst was under 5K. Smart man what he has now is worth a fortune.

One of the greatest and nicest musicians on the planet. When I was a kid, I caught one of his picks at a show in L.A. Two years ago my daughter and I met Rick before a show. During the show, he ran to the edge of the stage, pointed her out and tossed her a pick. I almost broke down and cried.

His work before D.P. was even better, like Hot Love, one of their best tunes. i was loving all of them, even when Tom sadly was fishing...and came back with a 12 string bass!! one on one is an underestimated release, STANDING ON THE EDGE is one of my fav's and Heaven Tonight. Saw them on 3 tours, the last one was Tom's return and they knew how to make it a party.... I did love the heavy intro to surrender, and the song Dream Police, but california man had a great early year hard rock style, Vocally Rick had more work on that one too, (dream police). his laugh.

Rick Nielsen knows what he's doing!!! I used to detune my gee tars a long time ago, that is till i found out it doesn't work! Simple deduction, strings keep tension on the neck/body so the neck--Won't Warp. Correct storage, upright and at least in a regular climate and decent case will keep the guitar normal. Here's some tips for keeping a guitar in tune. 3 in 1 Household oil on the saddles and vasoline on your nut--haha. If you own a Strat, use 3-1 on the 6 screws for the trem. Funny, red spotlights always made a guitar go out of tune, probably because they're more intense and red is used in therapy, but white and blue did nothing? Humidity reaks havoc on guitars also, but if you use the oil method, it drastically reduces the out of tune dilemma. Another trick is the Jimi Hendrix mix of gauges in standard strings. The G string is always a heavier gauge, which makes it G domineering--try using a lighter gauge to balance out the string set. Rock On!!!

Rick has been collecting guitars since the early 60's. His dad owned a musicshop in Rockford too, Nielsen's Music or something. The place that sold the first drum kit to one young Brad Carlson. Anyways, he's (rick) been collecting guitars for close to 6 decades, plus made a shit ton of money with a live record called "live at Budokan". They were as big as the Beatles in Japan, perhaps even more. They are also road dogs. They play constantly. Do you know many rock band from the 70's that still tour at least 150-200 dates a year in 2018? Me neither.

I surprised they didn't mention that Rick Nielsen sold Jeff Beck a 1959 Gibson LP Burst in 1968. That 59 was stolen on the last performance(7-26-1969) the Beck Group played at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. It was also 'the' guitar Jeff used on the first & second JBG albums.

To that guy that said his playing is mediocre... You play like that and run around the way he does while catching picks in your mouth and tossing a dozen more, one at a time, while that one still in the air and control time like that.. one pick is in slow motion while he pulls a flash move at the end of which he has a different guitar before you know what just happened, all during a solo... then I might believe you.

Fender Maverick. Fender made them out of surplus Electric XII's they couldn't sell. They did a similar thing with Bass V bodies and 22.5" scale Mustang necks and called it the "Swinger". Rick's is probably a refin, I doubt they custom ordered them.
@acarlovonsexron1994
@acarlovonsexron1994 7 жыл бұрын
Right, but the Maverick wasn't a typical guitar, I don't think they were ever made to order, they just chopped them up and shipped them out hoping someone would buy them quicker than the electric xii. I could be wrong though, if it is a legit original custom color Maverick, it's got to be one of very few if not unique.

The best day of my life is when I got to be a local stagehand crew for cheap trick during the Olympics at a private show in Park City Utah I was the guitar techs helper I am a guitar player I have love Cheap Trick since 1976 it was freaking unbelievable the tech was super pissed because he work for Keith Richards but the stones weren't on tour my job was to stand there and not bother him at one point my hand started gravitating toward the checkerboard Explorer like magic I was just drawn to it I couldn't help it my hand started magically reaching out for it I like the the guy had eyes in the back of his head he didn't even look from what he was doing and slap my hand out of the air and said told you not to touch them fucking guitars mate now take this 50 lb bag of Cheap Trick guitar picks and put them on the x's on the stage that was my job for the day not to touch his guitars and a hold 5000 Cheap Trick guitar picks believe me a few of them went home with me and believe me when Rick played I was front row My Guitar Hero 3 ft away from me I didn't even care but he credit card swiped my old lady's cleavage with his guitar pick and left it there during the flame have you ever seen somebody take a guitar pick and throw it out like a boomerang in between chords and catch it and hit the next chord this guy is a groundbreaking Entertainer and fabulous guitar player and seems like a nice guy cuz I thought I'd get a glimpse of Cheap Trick playing in the nightclub in Park City but it don't matter how big the room is there still Cheap Trick they get in they get out you don't even see them not even if you're working the show I don't know they how they got him in the building but I did not see Cheap Trick until they hit the stage it was crazy and I'm not saying his road crew is rude but a lot of people don't know there are contracts and things you do and don't do and the band will and will not play if these things do and don't happen and one of the things in their contract is at this giant huge rig of gigantic oversized Marshalls has to be on the back line or Rick Nelson will not play we had to dismantle literally take the front door off the nightclub and take the railing down off the staircase and tear out another Doorway to get the fucking thing in the building so they could play and you know that really don't make a 5-foot by 5-foot Marshall cabinets with 3ft heads on them they were just props but they're cheap trick goddamnit and they had to be there even if he was playing through a little Fender amp out of his collection and some some rack shit from the 80s that was sitting off to the side of the stage with the mic on it but if Rick Nelson wants a wall of giant Marshalls behind him while he plays that's what he gets and believe me I know this is getting long so I'll stop I love Cheap Trick it was one of the best experience of my life I've seen Cheap Trick many many times but only work for them this once and you guys know this not only does it take those guitars with them he uses every one of them sometimes two or three guitars for one song this guy is the goat

@@fdeckard And how do you qualify to be his grammar bziatch. Especially while making more mistakes in one short statement than his whole story had. - I know it has been a year but it is still here, so don't even try that one. "You need commas in your life." Three corrections Mr. Authority on improper grammar. You learn something in school, you don't teach it that day, before you applied it yourself. Me, I sent my editor home so call him

Cool story, someone HAS to be that guy at every show. They do more shows and tour more than any band ever. Like almost 300 per year. They take time off once a year, tour the rest. All those shows, well, one show in utah, specifically, it is cool that you shared that with everyone. Thx

You know lots of people give me crap about my punctuation or lack thereof I'm just an old guy been through alot I will admit I'm not the best grammar ologist but I just talk into this thing it puts the words on the screen I don't know why it doesn't punctuate and I don't really care as long as people get the point of my stories have a good one

@@brucegaskins7188 I enjoyed your story. Have several of my own, having studied drums with a well known many times platinum recording artist from the bay area of California. I just hate when people who cannot even spell correctly go trying to correct other people in attempt to distract from the original context. This is not an article or a book, it is a comment on youtube, not meant to be a perfect English assignment for class, right... Maybe, these kids feel empowered by pointing out other people's errors, but geez at least if you have to be that dikhead, don't fukup your correction, 6 words, 3 errors is way worse than any commas, I didn't even notice, because the value of the story is greater than the details of proper grammar. He is an idiot. Anyway I never met or worked with Cheap Trick, but I saw them in 81, 83, and later when Tom returned when the Flame was released. They were awesome every time, and you are not kidding about the picks, I was in the 14th row and took home about a half dozen from that one show. He literally does what you said, it is not exaggerated....much. He will toss a hand full of them, jump up like david lee roth with a guitar, catch one in his mouth, kick one to someone 20 rows out, then spin and kick another one with back kick, and switch guitars before the last pick is caught by a fan, yes during a solo. OMG and what other band is so badass they have a 12 string bass? I always wanted to know if that is a 4 string design with 3 per E A D G, or does it have B E A D G B with 2 strings per. Ever played bass? Imagine playing 3 strings per one. Tom must have the hands of a giant.

Still plenty of stuff on his shop page. They've not gotten the word out or nobody cares, I dunno. Or maybe he keeps adding stuff. He obviously could. The prices aren't out of line.

At 3:36 Witness a revelation--haha To my knowledge, Gibson only made 2 of these 58' Explorer's with the V Peg Head stock. When i was a kid, i remember a Music shop in Detroit called Fortuna's, only a couple of blocks down Van Dyke Ave. from the old Eastown Theatre. The owner actually had a Flying V AND an Explorer outside the shop suspended in the doorway approach to get people's attention to visit the store. This is around 1963-64. Hahaha Who knew!!! These guitars didn't sell because they were too Futuristic, and were uncomfortable to play also. I probably could have picked up those 2 guitars back then for under a couple hundred dollars--IF THAT!!! DAMN... AiN'T THAT A SHAME!!! hahaha

That's a nice story but it's a Gibson Futura. Note the body outline. It's a pre-cursor to the Explorer itself.

MuscleDad420 So Sorry MuscleDad420, look carefully at the pick guard. Pause at 3:44 examine the flat guard just to the right of the vol/tone controls. The 57' Gibson Futura had a pointed pick guard. Also, checkout where the body meets the neck on Ricks--around 19th/20th fret, on both sides. The Futura joined on the strap side around those frets, butt the finger side was almost at the joint at contact to the neck, for easier high note playability. There are other detailed differences, but these are the major ones. From everything i ever read about Rick Nielsen's collection, he did own some Blue-Chip Vintage 58' 59' 60' LP's V's and 2 Explorer's, and Never a Futura. An Original 57' Gibson Futura would probably be worth half of his whole Guitar Collection, that's if he owned one! Nice Story, but note the Body Outline! On that Note(Eb)...CASE 3:59 CLOSED---haha

Denny Mcfastlane Cheers Denny. Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention and my eyes were playing tricks on me in the wee hours. It is indeed a very rare transitional Explorer with the forked headstock.

MuscleDad420 Like Rick Nielsen said in the above interview Daddy O' 3:45 Gibby only made 2 Explorer's! Both Rick's-haha have the only 2 Futura Headstock Explorer's. That's probably the only Major difference between the two V Futura headstock and the limited production Hockey stick head stock Explorer. C'ya.

I have 1/1000ths of the guitars he has. To me it was a addiction like women buying shoes. With a mouse and Ebay I spent a fortune. You end up finding out of 100 guitars you will only play about 5 to 10 on a regular basis. And the reason I have not thinned out the herd is selling is such a pita,expensive,a little risky and unless you got it dirt cheap off some poor sob or its pre 70s and rare, you are going to lose you ass. I would LOVE to see his collection but actually feel sorry for closet queens. Good to see that rather than going up in smoke or up his nose he put his $$$ into a material object unlike most rock stars.

Maafa 1619 Look up the video of the tour they gave of his house. Seriously, its the most tacky,ugly house i have ever seen in my life. He and his wife pick up stuff around the world and used it to decorate the interior. You gotta see it. Love ya Rick but man that house! I ahev seen CT probably a dozen times and use to stay after everyone left. I now have about 15 picks that go back to the 70s.

Thats right. I thought he looked like the biggest nerd I have ever seen.As soon as he hit his first riff,did not matter. Angus Young wearing a school boy's outfit was a goof ball. That was until he bobbed his head non stop for 2 hrs and rolled on the floor during his solo acting like Curly. I say what I did in jest but regardless.It is a dam ugly house but he can and did do it for him not us.

When I put a guitar up for awhile (ie. Pawnshop) I always detune the guitar to take the tension off of the neck. Apparently (from what I see in the vid,)Rick doesn't. I would expect better from a collector of his caliber.

If they're kept at a regular temperature, string tension won't cause much.

Acoustics you want to drop a half to full step.... Put light strings on em.. Electrics it doesn't really make a difference.. 1/2 step down would be fine if your worried, but you want to keep em tuned and don't loosen the strings too much!
