It seems like very few people are realizing what this song is actually about ! 🙏 If you look at the photo on the screen, it says "dear wormwood" which is a reference to a wonderful video game by Toby Fox called Undertale (2015), which is a telling of a human who falls underground ⬇into a world of monsters, and makes various decisions which affect the nature of their world. The whole song is talking about the various routes and makes references to the original game; the Soldier 🔪is the human as in the No Mercy route - "tearing down" the Underground and the monsters that live peacefully within. The Poet ❤ is the human in the Pacifist and Neutral routes - finding unusual and peaceful ways to sway the monsters (with their words, perhaps ! ). The King 👑is Asriel, the God of Hyperdeath, who becomes ensnared in the form of Flowey ("brow laid in thorn") after his ashes scatter the garden upon his death. Undertale (2015) by Toby Fox is fundamentally about the different faces we wear based on our decisions 😇! We are ALL the Soldier, the Poet, and the King - that is, we carry the potential to be 🙌🙌🙌 Blessings be :3

The dark eastern forest holds a mighty great tribe of creatures. Goblins , corpses and fiends dwell along in long-lasting peace and cooperation. Three branches of women rule and guide this tribe so. Three soldiers, three poets and three queens. The soldiers’ weapon are three as well: spear, scythe and mallet. Three songs are sung by the poets: of every day’s coming and going, love’s and flesh’s cravings and desires, and happenings of yesterday, tomorrow and today. Three precious materials sport the queens in their regalia: bone, amber and coral.

@duskflower88257 жыл бұрын
+Squirrel Master This song isn't about the abuser (the abuser never sings) - it's the protagonist singing back (ultimately to Death, the album is about being caught in this relationship that only leads to death and destruction and then leaving in Exeunt and seeing death overthrown in Where is Your Rider. The 'Soldier, Poet and King' are all one person - Jesus - the heir described in Caesar who overthrew death (the Oh Hellos are Christian - they aren't technically a Christian band but a lot of their music is very Christian).

Whenever I hear this song, I imagine a group of travelers in a medieval world with medical magic, sitting around a campfire while their bard sings of their accomplishments, and of their losses. They sing together, because together is what they've always done, and they fear that when the quest is over and the reward is split, the good times will be forgotten. so they sing, and they dance, and they pray that the moment will last.

The song is referencing the Apocalypsis of the Return of Jesus. It’s God coming to Earth to lay waste to Babylon, the anti-Christ, and the kings of the Earth that will follow him. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." (Revelation 19:15-16) "There will come a poet Whose weapon is His word He will slay you with His tongue" "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12) "There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy" "And twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29) "Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. Why does the lyric contains "they will tear your city down"? It sounds ominous and scary behind this cheery song.
@Amelia-dc9ei5 жыл бұрын
Well this song as well as the album are made with Christian references. The album title itself, Dear Wormwood, is a reference to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, a heavily Christian book and author (for reference this is the same man who made Narnia with a Jesus lion). Now for this song specifically, it is talking about the Messiah. "They will tear your city down" is showing how the Jewish believed the Messiah would come and conquer the Romans, and I believe also referencing how Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple. For the poet line, it is talking about how he will use the Word of God. And the king line, it is talking about how he will come to rule the Earth. These also work for Christian interpretations of Jesus. At least this is what I understood from it. Hope I helped a bit!

"tear your city down" can also be read as freeing and cathartic - tearing down something intricate and complex that has taken a long time to build up, but is in the heart of it filthy, corrupt, and keeping its citizens trapped within its walls. the parallels of this to that of an abusive relationship works really well here - with jesus as the saviour who is metaphorically "tearing the city down"

Umm... so, I'm not even kidding, this song is literally about Jesus. This album was made in reference to an essay or novel that C.S. Lewis (the author of The Chronicles of Narnia) wrote, called The Screwtape Letters. Which were, from what I understand, a series of letters written by the senior Demon Screwtape, to a younger junior Demon Wormwood, in which Screwtape would give advice and guidance to his younger protege on how to tempt and corrupt humanity (specifically one man, referred to only as "the patient" in the letters). This album is essentially The Oh Hellos take on what the Patient would write to Wormwood. This is why so many people think the album is about getting out of abusive relationships, because in a sense, it is. We as humans love Sin. We let it control us, at times we give it almost all we have, hoping for it to give back in return in the form of pleasure, power, satisfaction, ect... But Sin is a deceitful, manipulative, and abusive lover, who in reality cares nothing for you. But it knows all the tricks to keep you coming back. Guilt, lies, immediate pleasure, shame, isolation, uncertainty, anxiety. Just like an abusive relationship, Sin uses our emotions against us like a weapon. And just like an abusive relationship, usually the only ways out of it, are if you take a leap of faith, or if _Someone_ steps in to help.

While this definitely isn’t the real meaning behind this amazing song, I’m going to say what I think it’s about anyways. In my mind, the soldier, poet, and king are all different ways to solve problems. Each one is successful in the end (“he will tear your city down”) but they each have their own method. The soldier is like facing a problem head on, taking it down by pure force alone. You don’t need to think your way through, you can just charge to the finish line. His “mighty sword” is like brute strength and perseverance. The poet is the crafty way, the one who finds a way to the end in an unexpected way. “He will slay you with his tongue” is like reading between the lines and interpreting the challenge in a unique way. The king is like solving a problem the way you’re supposed to. This verse has a lot of Christian references (“whose brow is laid in thorn” “David’s boy”) so it’s like following the just, honest, truthful route. This is just what I think when I hear this work of art. It’s such a good song!

It seems like very few people are realizing this song is about Jesus! If you look that the photo on the screen, it says “dear wormwood” which is a reference to a Christian book by C.S Lewis called the ScrewTape Letters, which is a telling of letters sent between two demons trying to convert a Christian into an athiest. The whole song is talking about Jesus and makes references to the Bible; The King is Jesus-Oil like David’s Boy, brown is lain in Thorn (crown of thorn), the poet is probably speaking of the main authors of the Bible, and the soldier is Jesus destroying sin!

They tear us down intentionally due to their own ignorance. The poet is amazing with words but he’s the person in life who you think so highly that one word of negativity from them hurts because you know they are wise. The ruler is set in his own ways and you can’t change it. Things in life we need but don’t always want that can hurt us, is something I got from this

Actually, this song is addressed to Wormwood (I’ll explain later). The soldier is coming to tear down Wormwood’s city and free the people trapped there. The poet will use His truth to dismantle Wormwood’s lies. The King will rule righteously in Wormwood’s place, and the singer is excited because they know that He will be a good King. The entire album is addressed to Wormwood, actually. It’s a reference to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Wormwood is essentially a metaphor for sin and temptation. The Soldier, Poet, and King are actually the same person- Jesus Christ. This song is about the prophecy of His second coming. The Oh Hellos are a Christian folk music band.

Also, Solomon, Davids's son, was also the king and anointed he was known for being wise like all king should. and he will slay you with his words is pretty close with the bible saying that it is part of the armor of god it being the sword. but I'm just gonna pretend is a prophecy so that I can be a little cottage girl who likes girls.

So I’ve always known this Album was a full story and based off the screwtape letters and a couple other books but I always thought the best way to understand this song was to literally read the whole album as a story and then within the context of the story’s poetry this song would make sense so I just decided to put all the lyrics together as one sprawling story. It helps immensely to read the Album this way and it’s also really cool because the lyrics really flow into each other Oh fair and flighty love My aerolite above The only dove I see Could you love me more If by the sun and moon I swore That I would never flee? Well, I still taste you on my lips Lovely bitter water The terrible fire of old regret is honey on my tongue And I know I shouldn't love you I know I shouldn't love you But I do Oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh I feel it in my soul I feel the empty hole The cup that can't be filled I feel it in my blood In the fire and the flood The beast that can't be killed Even now you mark my steps Lovely bitter water Oh, the days of our delights are poison in my veins I know I shouldn't love you I know I am not a fool entire No, I know what is coming You'll bury me beneath the trees I climbed When I was a child I know I shouldn't love you Well, I know I shouldn't love you But I do There beneath the willow tree I learned a lot about the way of things I learned that everything (the wind, the leaves) has breath inside They were pointing ever east To see the ever-turning aeon cease Their wills were ever bent on waiting with all their might I know (I know) I know this There is beauty in the way of things There beyond the palisade I saw the morning lead a cavalcade They made a marvel of a display And it made me cry 'o lai' O lai (o lai) O lai lord There is beauty in the way of things I was all alone, we were young, you were like wine Heady as the fog rolling in o'er the hillside Lovely as the song in the air as the wind blows Opiate as the cold of the frost on the windows Lo, the rose is gone from my eyes (so deceiving) So, my little dove, I'm afraid I am leaving Now, I am not the fool I was when I was younger Crocodile eyes, I have seen how you hunger Fluttering your lashes, like ashes and embers Warm and bright as fire devouring timber No, I cannot trust what you say when you're grieving So, my love, I'm sorry, but still: I am leaving Even when you hunt me with ire, relentless Batter down my door when you find me defenseless I will not abide all your raging and reaving I have set my mind and my will: I am leaving Hear on the wind how the pendulum swings Feel how the winter succumbs to the spring Over the palisade morning will break Rise up to meet it, oh sleeper awake Gather the soldiers, the heir to enfold Crown him and give him a scepter to hold Sound every horn as the columns extend Up to the hill where the king will ascend Look to the sky where the sign will be shown Heaven and earth and the king on his throne Look to the sky where the sign will be shown No, I am not afraid to die It's every breath that comes before Heartache I've heard is part of life And I have broken more and more But I can hope how this will end With every line, a comedy That we can learn to love without demand But with unreserved honesty. If I am not afraid to die And you were crouching at my door and suffering Is all to gain in life Then what is all this waiting for? Cause I can see how this will end In all its bitter tragedy I'll give you all I have to spend And you'll give nothing back to me. I will wait for this to end The back and forth; the battery For you at last to comprehend The kind of love of which I speak. Down they fell like the children of Eden Down they fell like the tower As the land relinquished her ghost Heed the sirens, take shelter, my lover Flee the fire that devours But the sight held me fixed Like a bayonet against my throat Neither plague or famine tempered my courage Nor did raids make me cower But his translucent skin Made me shiver deep within my bones It was a pale white horse With a crooked smile And I knew it was my time It was the raging storm Of a foreign war And a face I'd seen before Was it you 'mid the fire and the ember? Were you there to bedevil and beguile? See, your face wasn't quite as I remember But I know that wicked shape to your smile Bury me as it pleases you, lover At sea, or deep within the catacomb But these bones never rested while living So how can they stand to languish in repose? He has thrown down the cavalry as gravel sinks And as the stone founders underneath the sundered sea of red and reed The shadow of Hades is fading For he has cast down leviathan, the tyrant, and the horse and rider Where is your rider? He will hold with all of his might the armies of night, Still as boulders laid to the side 'til we pass by He has hoisted out of the mire every child So lift your voice with timbrel and lyre "We will abide, we will abide, we will abide" There will come a soldier Who carries a mighty sword He will tear your city down, oh lei oh lai oh Lord Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will tear your city down, oh lei oh lai oh Lord There will come a poet Whose weapon is His word He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei oh lai oh Lord Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei oh lai oh Lord There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy, oh lei oh lai oh Lord Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord Smeared with oil like David's boy, oh lei oh lai oh Lord Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will tear your city down, oh lei oh lai... oh Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh lai, oh Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh lai, oh Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh lai, oh When I was a child I didn't hear a single word you said The things I was afraid of They were all confined beneath my bed But the years have been long And you have taught me well to hide away The things that I believed in You've taught me to call them all escapes I know who you are now I know who you are I know who you are now There before the threshold I saw a brighter world beyond myself And in my hour of weakness You were there to see my courage fail For the years have been long And you have taught me well to sit and wait Planning without acting Steadily becoming what I hate I know who you are now I know who you are I know who you are now I have always known you You have always been there in my mind But now I understand you And I will not be part of your designs I know who I am now And all that you've made of me I know who you are now And I name you my enemy I know who I am now I know who I want to be I want to be more than This devil inside of me Let me die, let me drown, lay my bones in the ground I will still come around when the time for sleep is through Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale Do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you Every tomb, every sea, spit the bones from your teeth Let the ransomed be free as the revel meets the day Let the valleys awake, let them rattle and shake In the wind that remakes all that time has worn away To and fro, I will not follow Where you go, I will not also I will look for you as the sun rises higher When the dry bones dance with the timbrel and lyre There's a wind alive in the valley It will fill your lungs, if you'll have it Where I go, will you still follow? Will you leave your shaded hollow? Will you greet the daylight looming, Learn to love without consuming?

I'm so deeply inlove with this piece. It's basically been my comfort song for about a year and a half now, and it helped me calm down so many times that it's hard to count. It just makes me feel safe and warm, like I'm laying in a field full of flowers carelessly without worries.

The first thing I think of when I hear this song is ; a ruler with a crown of thorns like when before Jesus was crucified Crown of Thorns was laid on his head Jesus. Is a descendant of David you could say he is David's boy. When he was laid in the Tomb he was covered in oil as was the custom.

*“Soldier, Poet, King” is a song about the second coming of Jesus Christ. It is based on C. S. Lewis’s writings about the end of the world according to Revelation; this song and others on Dear Wormwood, are inspired by Lewis' The Screwtape Letters.*
