Today is Day Five of working on Big Bad John! I had a couple of new hydraulic hoses made, so we will work on getting the old ones out and the new ones in. I'm ready to get this machine digging again! Keep watching until the end to see a few more AMAZING discoveries I made for this old beast!
~
The DAY by DAY Video PLAYLIST for the REVIVAL of this Rare Caterpillar No.6 Shovel and all of it's videos can be found HERE: • RARE Caterpillar Track...
~
I recently discovered this 60+ year old Caterpillar No 6 Shovel that has been sitting for 15+ years at a farm beautifully parked under a barn! Apparently they parked it one day due to a scare with a tree they were pushing down, and it hasn't moved since!Grandpa has honored me with the privilege of bring this old beast back to life, & then BACK TO WORK!
Join me on the journey as I show you what it TRULY takes to get old machines running again without doing major harm in the process! It takes a little longer to do it this way, but it's ALWAYS worth it!
~
This will be a little different than normal content, because my plan is to create a new video of the progress I make on the old machine as each day passes. We'll see how this goes, but I'd love to know your thoughts on the different content style, and if you are willing to follow along! Join me as I take you along on my journey through the many ups and downs of this project! I feel honored to be taking on this project, and I truly hope you enjoy the process and progress as we get this OLD CAT to ROAR once again.
Thanks as always for watching and following along with all my crazy adventures here on Salvage Workshop, I TRULY appreciate it! Please enjoy! I know I did!

Just to confirm, I’m a senior citizen, 83 years who thoroughly loves your presentations. While you are working I can easily relate and it brings back many pleasant memories. How much I used to enjoy working on machinery. You do a great job with you commentary and photography. I look forward to your shows every week and am sorry when they finish. I would like to see more and am disappointed when you skip a week, sometimes several weeks! Keep it up wish I was there helping you. I’m amazed at your knowledge of all these things. Looks like “Big Bad John” is a total winner!

This miniseries is a darned sight better than Netflix, that is for sure. The machine only needs what I call normal service and in-service parts. The comments give good food for thought on the thermostats, I have never seen ones that are normally open at 'normal' room temperatures, and I suspect no one else has either. That said, the parts treasure hunt has been rewarding and a great source of entertainment. Thank you for filming, editing and putting this one out.

DUDE those wound string fuel filters were a trip! They look exactly like a home water filter that you can plumb in. Having a viewer send you those NOS ones was awesome! I'm totally geeking out on these videos! My dad owns a bit of machinery for his tree service and I grew up helping him work on his stuff and get old equipment running that he would buy. I agree with the other comments about measuring a hyd hose from mating face to mating face, so you'll have the right length regardless of what ends are on them. I also think "Buster Keaton" has the right idea with just rotating the hose fittings a little bit, that might put a little twist in the hose, enough that it clears the pony spark plugs. Also, for removing those screws on the top of the radiator: WD-40 is not a great penetrating lube! I do like the penetrating spray they make, but the original stuff isn't great for braking loose old rusted fasteners.

When I arrived at Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taiwan in the middle 60’s it was a bare base, 24 tents, 12 revetments and a Butler building. Then the contractors arrived to build a complete base. I still remember arriving for work every morning and hearing the “putt, putt, putt” sound of all the pony motors as they fired up their Cats for the day’s work. Thank you for the memory.

I wish my dad was here to watch your videos about repairing and restoring the No 6 shovel. As I told you he used to work the D6 Dozer in the early 1950s. I'm betting that he would have loved to watch everything you're doing. I myself am enthralled watching you because of how much he told me about working the D6. I'm sure that if you put thermostats into hot water it will open then put them into cold water it should then close back up. But if they're cold they won't open until the water temperature is at working temperature. Hope this helps you to save some money. Good luck from the UK🇬🇧.

So nice to see one that has been so well cared for going to someone that can keep it up,. Please keep them coming if you are able, this channel should have a million subscribers, it is pure gold! Those thermostats are different temp values and normally only one opens (at around 185 degrees) and the other opens when engine demand heats up to allow more flow (around 195 degrees). Those appear to be stuck open. At least that's the way someone once explained it on a video I watched in the past. Also, when you adjust the brake bands, make sure you set the band droop slack adjustment at the bottom of the bands (underneath the tractor). It should just look like a bolt with a locking nut. Just loosen the locking nut and turn the bolt in until it just bottoms out and then back off about 1 1/2 to 2 turns. (Should show the setting in the book) It will prevent gravity wear on the top of the brake bands.

Pretty sure you can take the thermostats apart to clean the shafts that push the valves open. You'll need to confirm that they work properly after getting them back together. D-17000's in RR engines ( the motor I'm familiar with) had 4 per motor. On a D-17000, the service manual says to take a piece of 1 1/4' pipe, 2" long and cut 2 slots, 180 degrees apart, 5/8" wide X 1/2" deep in each side. Place the tool on the bottom of the thermostat and use a bench vise to release the straps that hold the valve plate in in place. Don't lose the rubber disc that seals the piston in the "power element" or the thing that pushes the piston as the coolant heats up. Cat suggests using crocus cloth on the piston to clean it up and coat the piston with water pump lubricant when reassembling. To test heat a pan of water with the thermostat suspended in it. It should start to open around 175°F and be fully open at 185° F. The service manual states that during regular operation the thermostats are under greater pressure than atmospheric pressure and will open at 170° F. I realize there might be size difference between what you have and a V-8 Cat, but the thermostats are very similar in construction. You might find that using a smaller dia. pipe for your pusher will work for you. Good luck with it. That's a sweetheart of a survivor. Should last another 50 years with some TLC.

we had an old d6 with a dozer blade that we used on the farm to push dirt into our huge trash pits behind the barn. dad had a guy come out with a big ole excavator and dig a couple of holes that were 15' deep, and about 25' across. we threw all of our trash, fallen branches, moldy hay and straw and other junk wood into them to burn, and every so often we would push a little bit of the dirt that was piled up next to the holes from digging them into the hole to cover up the mess in order to help keep the rats under control. he bought it really cheap because one of the front track wheels had a bad bearing that would screech when we used it, but since that wasn't very often, dad said it wasn't worth the cost and effort to replace it, so we just kept pumping the grease to it and tried to ignore the bearing crying. it worked like that for 10+ years till dad quit farming in the late 80's and sold the dozer, an 8n and a 9n, the tillage and planting equip. and the acreage. we kept a 706 to push snow, and i used it with a 12' boom i made to help me scrap out junk vehicles and farm machinery i dragged home to resell. i could pull the high mounted engine out of a self propelled combine with that tractor and boom no problem.

There's a very old-school tool that works beautifully for removing stubborn screws. I don't know the name, but it's a cam-action screwdriver that you strike with a hammer. With your collection of old tools, you probably know what I'm talking about and just didn't have it on-site. If you don't - you need one. They are rock-simple and will break ANY screw loose, as long as you have the right bit installed, grip it tight, and pre-torque the body as hard as you can, before striking it. I've used it many times stubborn screws - it would've blown those overflow screws right out. Love the content and I am always glad to see these old machines brought back into service.

Smaller hoses will just slow everything down. But they need to be the same size on each side if the lower ones are 3/4 and it needs to be three quarters on both sides , or one cylinder will be working faster or harder than the other cylinder causing stress on all the pins.

From a Hydraulic guy - The Diameter of the hose won't affect anything about the usability of the bucket except for how FAST the bucket moves. Preferably use the smaller hose on the PRESSURE side (when you lift the bucket). How MUCH the bucket can lift is in a direct proportion to the PRESSURE, and the diameter of the hose doesn't affect that at all. The SPEED of the bucket depends on FLOW - and that IS affected by the diameter of the hose. One thing to watch for is how the hoses are Routed. Hoses rubbing anything is a BAD thing - as you've found out. Do your best to make sure that they don't rub anything, and you'll save yourself a LOT of heartache! CONGRATS on finding that grease tool! that thing will probably be a godsend to maintaining BOTH the old Cats! I expect they'll have the same fittings. And LOVING the format - GREAT watching you rescue old machines and putting them back to work. Just because they're old, doesn't mean that they aren't able to work!

What makes sense for that guage is that, you are correct, it's a "filter condition guage" and what it requires you to do is simply understand the guage position when the filter is fully clean. As the filter gains particulates, the pressure guage increases which is reflected on the guage.

I believe that the cover you found with the grease pump is to go over the pony motor spark plug. If not you should fashion a cover instead of planning to remove the plugs and put a plug in it's place. I am sure that the plugs would have been covered when new to prevent exactly what happened to you when you raised the bucket and the plug got broken.

First time commenter, but this old fart loves your attitude toward quality machines. One thought that may not be worth anything more than what you paid for it: When you started on the diesel system you found and rodded a clot in the static line between the tank outlet and the drain valve. I’m calling that a static line because in normal operation fuel does not flow through the drain portion of the system. Moving to the left front of the unit, you’ve mentioned a couple of times about the inactivity you’re seeing from the fuel filter pressure gauge. Either as a direct system pressure or as a filter diagnostic, that gauge is likely on yet another static leg of the system. The gauge itself is likely fine. However, its pressure signal may well be currently impeded by what is effectively a non-functioning clogged throughput of diesel fuel. I mention this because very early on in the series I happened to notice that gauge indicating pressure even while you were still rescucitating the pony motor, and hadn’t even began to turn the diesel over. My guess is that if you rod the supply line to that gauge, and flush the gauge itself, you’ll see that gauge showing more variabilty than you are presently. Hope this helps!
@SalvageWorkshop
@SalvageWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same thought, and so I pulled off the line that leads to that gauge, sprayed it out, and then stuck a wire into the hole in the fuel filter tower, which is what feeds the gauge, and it was clear... We'll see when I start it up next if the gauge works better with clean filters, or if the gauge is in fact bad...I guess we'll find out together!

Old diesel does funny things. I drive a 5.9 Cummins and a 1.6 Cruze TD, and tool around on a John Deere 2305. It may be worth your while to invest in a bottle of Power Service's Diesel Kleen. That should resolve any chunkiness from 15 year old diesel and keep you from having to drain/flush/ and refill the fuel system.

That sir is definitely an Alemite grease pump, that’s what it would have come with. As far as the tool box, it is very possible that is it. My D2’s and D4’s came with a wooden box that had all the tools in them. As far as the thermostats go, on initial startup the temp of the coolant is not hot enough to open the thermostats, they stay closed till temperature is about 160 degrees F. No coolant flows to the rad, This helps it to warm up faster. Coolant instead flows into the bypass water passage which is connected to the inlet side of the water pump. It looks like to me those thermostats are stuck open, try heating them in some boiled water and see if they move at all. That’s how I test all Of mine, if they don’t move just replace as needed. I’m excited to see the next rescue you found out here!! You should really consider becoming a member of ACMOC, you clearly have the bug for old Cat iron and that’s the club to belong to.

I just love your work ethic it' cool to see someone your age tackle these projects I'm 80 years old and all my life i had that same ethic in fact I'm a retired construction supe and I'm still working driving a quad axle dump truck it's not strenuous work but I just can't sit on my butt at home and be a veggie love your channel

Progressive thermostats. Different temp setting on each one. First one opens at lower temp, usually at around 180 and depending on cooling requirements of engine as it heats up the second one opens at about 190 to allow for extra water flow and extra cooling. Note which side is which. Usually temps marked on the thermostat. Used on a lot of the new diesel trucks.

@@SalvageWorkshop check with cat. They should have correct part numbers. It might be they both open at same but usuallu one opens first and then second one as engine heats up. Diesls usually run fairly cool so reason they restrict flow unless used hard. They should both be closed when cold.

Decreasing the inner diameter of the hose will decrease flow but will increase pressure. Possible side effect is the hydraulic cylinder will retract slightly slower, but probably not noticeable by the operator. If shorter connectors are not available, you should shorten the hose to reduce the strain on the connecters. All things considered; I would go back to 1" hoses per the factory design. There was some engineering design reason for using these size hoses in the first place.
@kevinoscarson2941
@kevinoscarson2941 2 жыл бұрын
Overall system pressure will not change as the pressure is regulated by the relief valve in the control valve. All of the older equipment had larger hoses on it because they ran low pressure and relied on flow and surface area to have high lift power. As for the smaller hoses, doubtful it will effect anything, if anything the hydraulics might run a bit hotter.

Well the hydraulic pump is not exactly a speed merchant when it comes to lifting the bucket, so the size of the hose is not really critical. I would use the smallest available (5/8 inch.?), that you can get the connectors for. After all it has only got to push about a gallon into each ram.

The cover you found in the garrage that had a bull bus center, could there be a cover that was removed to put spark plugs in the pony motor not put back on ? if so the bull bus part of the cover would keep the hydraulic hoses from beinf cut up by bolt heads and sparkplugs and protect the wire on the end. I don't know. Just a thought.

the thermostats are also a controlled by-pass type. IE ports direct the water to recirculate when cold, and direct the water to the rad as it heats up.

33:00 keep the diameter of the hoses. it has to have an impact on the reaction-speed of the shovel. If one applies all physical sense. although - it depends on the smallest diameter of the whole hydraulic system right? maybe ask a specialist. I don't know either. lol
