@@mikaelafox6106 thing is, that could have worked so well. Like, bring back the Kira name, but also keep the meanings he said in the movie. "L" being the American response to the original L, aka they started their own orphanage after meeting L, or maybe they had already been trying and only now did they feel it was a success. It would explain the character changes, the different story beats, maybe even have Ryuuk be his trickster self and nudge with "maybe you're his reincarnation" to push a delusion. That one simple change could make the entire thing so much better

You got me excited to watch and I was rather disappointed. Started with the stupid scene right in the beginning, where Andy takes the girls' phone to take a photo and deletes the photo of herself... and the girls don't react to her fiddling with the phone at all, even though it was given to her with the camera open and ready to shoot. Maybe I'm weird, but that immediately shattered my suspense of disbelief and it didn't come back for the rest of the movie. Which lead to zero leniency for things that don't make perfect sense. Also Andy does that, yet later on we see her in multiple photos throughout history for some of which she posed. It's extremely weird that the group of Immortals is essentially praised for their work for mankind because the people they saved either themselves do great things or have offspring that does, BUT at the same time the group openly and relentlessly slaughters every simple soldier who crosses their path. What about the soldiers and their children? Who are they to decide that these people are irredeemable and not just doing a job, believing they're doing the right thing? Why not use nonlethal methods? The movie had the option to talk about that and how the characters justify themselves when "new girl" brought it up but instead she just goes fuck it and joins the rest five minutes later. Then there's the drowned friend that Andy just gave up on. Why? The explanation is extremly lackluster ("We just couldn't find out where she was dumped" or something like that). It's not like she would have had to search the entire ocean, she knew where the ship that dumped her started from and considering the times it could only have travelled so far - are you telling me that she didn't have the resources to scour every inch of the seafloor in that area as soon as methods for that were available? The villain was a blatantly shallow caricature of a cliché which made the whole plot of CIA man capturing the group to deliver them to villain incredibly stupid. Why would anyone believe that that guy would keep to any agreement that involves some decency? Overall a superficial, cliché plot with interesting premise and characters, who sadly get mostly shallow dialogue. 3/5 for the premise (which I absolutely love) and good actors. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk :^)
@martinaseidel33164 жыл бұрын
i hear you on them slaughtering everyone. i guess it's part of the general hand-waving happening in these movies and i just kinda ignored it. i think looking for quynh was a lot more difficult back when she was dumped in the ocean because they couldn't find anyone to tell them where it had happened and they didn't have equipment to search for her. maybe it's still weak but it made sense to me.
@minajones83413 жыл бұрын
Except they didn’t know where she was dumped in the ocean. They couldn’t find anyone to tell them. And the technology didn’t exist for them to even attempt to try to find her.
@nalcarya3 жыл бұрын
@@minajones8341 As I wrote above there is no reason/or explnanation given as to why they couldn't just systematically search the entire ocean floor in a radius from the Harbour she was shipped out from. For which they don't need special technology since they're immortal and can just dive down, drown if need be, be pulled up to the boat by someone else and resurrect. Rinse and repeat until you find something. There's no explanation given for why that wasn't tried/an option unless they just didn't care about her that much. Also no explanation why they didn't try again when technology became available. That's what bothered me.

If you haven't seen/heard of this one yet, I recommend Sense8. It's a 2 season long science fiction series (it was suppose to be 3, but the 3rd season wasn't green litted. But they did get a movie so they used that to finish/tie together the most important main story/plot threads). If you haven't seen it and don't want to know more, then you can stop reading here. If you want a summary: 8 people suddenly gets the ability to access eachother's minds, see what they see, feel what they feel, learn all the skills they know and temporarely appear in front of eachother. They learn there are several people like them, each of them being in a group of 8 and each group being called a cluster. They also learn that the government is hunting them down to experiment and use those powers for their own purpose, and so the 8 main characters have to fight and flee from them as well as learn which other clusters are with or against them.

I feel like I’m the only one who felt this sucked. Characters were meh. Most likeable was Booker. His motivations felt human, I enjoyed the scene with his son and wish it was expanded on. Everyone else was just, no impactful. Crusaders were okay but I feel I didn’t get enough time to get to know their characters. The scene in the truck with the two was the best acting of the whole movie. Really sold their relationship. Andy was just bland and felt more like an emo teenage girl who thinks she knows what the world is all about because she listens to a vlog and read 1984 and animal farm for the first time and is an expert on everything than a warrior. Nile was just bland. Villain was a standard one dimensional villain you are made to hate. I really wanted him to be compelling because this actor has range, refer to Buster Scruggs as he was the armless and legless actor. C.E. I can’t spell his name, had potential but I feel they just made him a fan boy in the end. Action scenes seemed poorly structured and had an annoyance to me. Like the typical fanboy says it’ll be cool if they do this. Like people that have never been in a fight and think this is how people fight. Yeah, I’ve been in a fair number of street fights and did martial arts for over 10 years (Shotokan, Taekwondo, Judo, and Tai-Chi.) And couldn’t help but role my eyes. I may or may not have said for the ‘bad guys’ to sweep the leg and shoot them in the face. And Niles all of a sudden had the same reflexes and skills of centuries old warriors? Yeah....no. Her being able to fight because she’s a marine, that I believe. But being able to throw and beat up spec ops guys that have more combat experience and training than her at the get go, yeah...noooo. It could have been really good but it missed out on major areas it could’ve been great. Read the comic and I enjoyed it, wasn’t great but enjoyed it and was a entertaining read. And don’t get me started on the pop music used for the fight scenes. I just rubbed my eyes, put on Motörhead and watched them. Things move a lot faster to RocknRoll. This movie had nothing to offer. Was a re hash of old tropes. I’ll just stick with Highlander. It had compelling and realistic characters. I’ll stick with that.
@ultraslav93134 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt the same thing after watching it. It felt boring and underwhelming for the most part. The action was good in some scenes, but other times it was....questionable. Charlize Theron gave a pretty bored, predictable performance. Nile was bland, but she does have some potential if this series goes anywhere else. The acting in general was as you said, meh.

@Jana The editing and the soundtrack were some of the worst I've ever seen in a film, close to Suicide Squad levels. Why couldn't they take a page out of John Wick and put that type of music in there, because honestly it would have worked better
@angelofdeath4504 жыл бұрын
Jana the music really had no place in the fight scenes. I’m guessing it was the directors preference. It was distracting and belongs more in a drama during a breakdown and crying scene or driving scene along the highway. Not in a fight scene. Like when Niles was sitting alone and listening to music that’s appropriate and makes sense as it’s the music her character listens to.
@angelofdeath4504 жыл бұрын
Ultra Slav Niles has the potential to grow as a character. But I don’t know what direction it’ll be or if it’ll be good. I saw her motivations to see her family again as realistic but when she suddenly doesn’t want to see them again...again I rubbed my eyes and sighed and played Motörhead.
@angelofdeath4504 жыл бұрын
Ultra Slav Yes. Totally agree. Suicide Squad had one of the weakest soundtracks in recent history. John Wick would’ve been a good place to refer to for soundtrack. Maybe mix some different types of soundtracks to get the feeling. Like refer to 300 for the final battle scene, Fever Dream by Tyler Bates. Capture the anger and they’re going to mess up the guards. Another interesting thing they could’ve done to refer to the romance between the crusaders was play something a mixture of French and middle eastern influence or an Édith Piaf song for a moment between them.

I just watched this because I saw your review and I'm disappointed. Spoilers ahead. The plot was extremely contrived. Bad guy needs ALL the immortals, and never explains why. The traitor in the group could have volunteered himself and instead set them up to be captured. Nothing explains WHY they need more than one person to experiment on! And Booker had known them for 200 years, betrays them and then immediately 180s. Seems pretty flippant for immortals who 'choose every word carefully'. Nile, when she went in to save everyone, WALKED IN FRONT OF ARMED MEN for no reason. She had no plan. So she got rid of her element of surprise and outted herself as immortal for no reason in that moment. And in moments where timing was dire, people were having 60 second monologues. Nile should have been unbuckling everyone but instead she took 60 seconds to talk to Andy. Same happened at the end. And that's just the writing. The cinematography ruined whatever good choreography they had. LOTS of shake-y cam. Anytime there was dialogue they did up close shakey shots. And the color balance was extremely white. The music was either bland or downright tone deaf pop music with lyrics. I think Netflix skimped on the post production of this film. I think you're seeing this through rose tinted glasses. Because as a stand alone, this movie is subpar.
