What a tragedy to lose cities like this. I fantasize what it would be like walking through some of these quiet city streets. It’s night …maybe a light snow is coming down. I have a girl on my arm, and we’re not talking much, just enjoying each other’s company and marveling at the beautiful buildings.

I am an architecture student at LSU and have been fighting since freshman year. The forces we are up against are multifaceted and your videos perfectly highlight the products of the current regime shift we live under. We have been so compartmentalized to the point where certain subjects can seem to be completely unrelated but are in fact just another cog in the wheel of the new system we live under. Your videos are a light of truth and I had to share my gratitude.

Firstly. The Germans themselves are to blame. Had the Germans not started World War II, Konigsberg, Breslau and Danzig would still be German cities. But you have to pay for mistakes and bad decisions. Therefore, these cities do not belong to Germany. Secondly. Of these three towns, only Konigsberg was founded by the Germans (Knights of the Teutonic Order), but on the lands conquered by force, inhabited by tribes of Baltic Prussians (not Germans). Gdańsk was founded by Poles and for hundreds of years belonged to the Kingdom of Poland. The inhabitants of Gdańsk, mostly of German descent (but also Kashubians, Dutch, Poles, Scots) were faithful to the kings of Poland and only in 1793 the Prussians took (by force) Gdańsk and incorporated it into the Kingdom of Prussia, and after 1870 Danzig became a city belonging to united Germany. Breslau is Czech Vratislav or Polish Wrocław. It was founded by the Czechs in the 10th century, but then until the 14th century it was a city belonging to Poland. From 1335 to 1740 Wrocław (Vratislav) was a city belonging to the Kingdom of Bohemia. Only in 1740, as a result of the war, was it incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia and became German Breslau. All three of these cities became German as a result of military conquest. Since the Germans lost the war, these cities ceased to be German. These are the hard laws of history.

@@Mjak-yd3og Well i guess the Polish are exempted from paying for their Crimes. The Polish will one day pay the Price for their Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing of Germans after WW2. Also Danzig, Breslau, Königsberg and Stettin to name a few were all German Cities from their Inception only becoming Polish and in the case of Königsberg Russian after the Germans who lived there were Massacred, Raped, Expelled, Tortured and forbidden from returning. If the Allies had not treated the Germans as responsible for WW1 and showed the Germans Respect than they could have avoided WW2 and Warsaw would still be fully Medieval.

Sad story of beautiful baltic city destroyed by the war but never properly rebuild like for example the historic center of warsaw (poland), also completely destroyed but rebuild as a historic city. Warsaw is an example that a destoyed historic city can be properly rebuild. The new city of Kaliningrad was rebuild with the ugly modern concrete blocks and completely denied it (urban) history. I think that the sovjets did not want to rebuild the former city because they had occopied the new city and want to build a new russian city. Of Course it had te be rebuild so that no german can return there. It is sad because Russia has also beautifull cities (think about Sint Peterburg). So they now what a beautiful city is. But never had the intention to make a new beautiful city. Now it is a very ugly city. Of course some buildings are restored like the former Dom, but the rest of the city is a ugly place. A sad story of stupid behaviour of mankind. And now Kalingrad is a strategic russian city.

It's not because they didn't want to build a beautiful city. It's because they couldn't even think about it at the time. My grandmother's whole family was brought there after the war. It was utter poverty, they just needed to build simple buildings for surviving. Now if we talk about modern times, russians really do have a problem with building not ugly buildings nowadays. But it's a global trend - ugly glass, concrete and plastic boxes. I really wish they would rebuild historically like Poland or Germany do
@erikbeumer4963
@erikbeumer4963 Жыл бұрын
@@lexiesanders929 Thank you for your contribution. The focus was on rebuilding the city like the rest of Europe. The poverty lacks the possibilities to rebuild it. But If it was say Moscow or Sint Petersburg I think there would more focus on rebuilding the devasted and ruined old historic city and old historic building. Like they did with the old city of Warsaw which was completely ruined after the War. It was completely rebuild with almost photographic resemblance of the old city. I think that they had no interest in rebuilding the old city not only because is was cheaper to build large blocks but also because they had absolutely no interest in rebuilding old German buildings because they want to build a new Russian city with the modern ideas of socialism and communism. I think the planners and politicans liked the idea that the old buildings and memories of the former German city were erased. Some buildings were saved but not much. The Germans could not live there anymore. They had to flee. The city was populated by new inhabitants of the USSR. The approach to rebuild a completely new city is not new. I am Dutch and the city of Rotterdam was also bombed (by the Germans) and rebuild in a modern way. After the war they rebuild it in a modern way and completely build a new city and not rebuild the old historic city. A lot of architect and urban planners had sympathies of the socialist architecture and urbanism. A think is sad because it was such a beautiful old city like Amsterdam, Leiden or Delft with old buildings at canals. Koningsberg was also a really beautiful city. Sad story of human culture.

Looking through the lens of the 21st century, it certain looked like a very beautiful and historic European metropolis, especially given its royal credentials. Unfortunately, one man who twisted a government and a people to his own demented ends caused its ultimate destruction and loss to Europe. Now it’s simply just a shell of its former self with no real historical identity save a few buildings that survived post 1945. It’s a modern city, yes, but one with no real soul or identity now. It’s just a military stronghold that happens to have a population calling it home. That’s my take on it. If it was in the hands of its former citizens, is there a chance it would have been rebuilt as it was to a point?? I’d suggest probably a good chance of that given what’s happened in similar cities to its south and west. Being an exclave city doesn’t help it either jammed as it is between EU states. It suffers because of this. If Putin had any brains, he would have ensured it was able to take advantage of its position, but, as usual, he has failed with this huge missed opportunity. Looking at these shots, I’m amazed with the architecture. This city must surely have ranked as one of the most beautiful, certainly rivalling Prague, Vienna and Paris. Now, that is all gone. The once Royal capital of Königsberg is dead, long dead.

It is time the Russians are expelled from East Prussia and the territory goes back to the former owners. They had 78 years to make something of it, but it is an ugly empty nothing right now.

So very sad. A beautiful city and place that is no more. What saddens me even more is people's ignorance of history. To blame the German-Prussians in particular is ridiculous. Were German-Prussians a factor or motivating force in the Nazi regime? Absolutely not. Nor was so-called Prussian militarism. This was and is nonsensical scapegoating used by the British, Americans and Russians when the facts clearly said otherwise. Propaganda wasn't just effectively used in Nazi Germany, it seems.
