I am a painter and use my D800 with a Nikon AF-S 50mm f-1.8 for shooting my paintings. The accuracy and sharpness of the image is of primary importance to me. I have received many comments from gallerists, buyers, magazines, etc. over the quality of the images and how close they are to the actual painting. Sometimes a print of a painting is used in on set by set designers in the film and TV industry and having 36 mpixels provides far greater flexibility for much larger and cleaner printed reproductions. The D800 has been a bomb proof tool for me. (I’d love to have one made with carbon fiber. It would be so much easier to take with me outside when I’m just shooting for painting subject material. When I do that I use my Nikkor 28 - 300 f-3.5 which is also heavy to lug around. Make both out of carbon fiber. LOL.)

First, I will say I still think the D800 had and still has one of the BEST image quality of any camera I have used - it is a benchmark camera for me. I LOVE new tech though and for birding because of the tech, I switched to Canon. New stuff is a little lighter due to newer material, and that makes it easier to hike or walk farther with your gear. But image quality and build.... the old pro stuff like the D800 is.... the bomb! 🙏😁💖

The D800 was a revolutionary camera with DR a couple stops better than anything else, close to the maximum theoretical limit for 35mm. Now every camera does about the same but none better. I put about 400,000 frames through my D800 that I got by luck when most were waiting 6 months for delivery from the big online stores. I lucked out and got one in 2 days from Best Buy on a short trip back to my home country USA, right after it started shipping. I was the only one in my adopted country for 6 months. It has been flawless, but a 3rd party grip failed and took out the bottom multipin connector. Replacing that, and complete service/adjustments, cleaning to new appearance was $70. a year ago. I have the D850 with 144,000 frames. Almost all my shooting is in M mode, for studio and drama, ballet, opera and actor portfolio and corporate headshots. Most of it is done with a Z6 but when location shooting where the Z6 is used on video the D850 and D800 get their turn. Going mirrorless opened a lot of options to shoot live performances without a soundproof box but the DSLRs were dress rehearsal cameras where the loud shutter was not an issue. The D800 files are deep and rich, and a portrait, wedding or fashion photographer on a budget would have all the rich color and detail that one could want in a rugged reliable bargain on the used market. If they can get the job done with the D800 is it unlikely any other camera would be the answer. Yes, the D850 is more advanced but you are not going to see the difference in results. For $800 and a prime or two, they would be serious competition to any camera made today. I have a lot of F mount fast primes and 2.8 zooms, 18 in all from 14mm to 200mm but the main difference in why I use the Z6 is S lenses. The 50 1.2, 85 1.8, 70-200 2.8, and 35 1.8 is all I use, on most jobs only two are used. It really does not matter what DSLR I pick up for a shot, either one will produce winning images. Spend your money on lighting and modifiers instead of the latest camera. If the image is not good, it is not the camera.

The D800 is my benchmark for cameras quality and depth of color. I agree with you about the noise!!! When out shooting BIF, I really like hearing the shutter. I have used many different Nikons but the D800 to me has always been the best. The Z9 as far a color and quality is there as well for me. The D850 was great but still lacked something for me that the D800 has. And if I ever decide to do an event or shoot portraits for someone as a favor, it would most likely be with the D800 - it still just has that magic!!! 🙏❤🤗

I have a D800 which was my first Nikon DSLR after my F3 and Nikkormat Ftn. You could say I have worked my way along Nikons for 40 years and others going back to early viewfinder cameras Nice to know I have picked the right one and with the 2.8 24-70 silent wave lens I can do all I want. It may be a big beast but a superb combination.

Smoe Jith!!!!! Thank YOU!!!! Man, I LOVE the old tech. I have the Nikon Z9 on order as a rental to try out my old OLD 300 F2.8 and my also old 500 F4 on that new body. I have been shoot new Canon stuff for a while with all the bells and whistles, so going back out where I had to REALLY think about each shot was such a treat - made me feel like a real photographer all over again. LOL The Canon 500 F4 I use on my new Canon bodies is also older - 1st version EF glass. Because I think most people buy a camera wanting to go out and take amazing photos - the new stuff does make that easier - some miss or don't learn the basics. The benefit.. is that the older stuff that is still in great shape, is more readily available and less expensive. A win win I think!!!! I can not thank you enough for letting me share with you!!!! 🤗🙏💖

Sorry for the delay in responce - this just came up in my comments. I have not shot in in a while, but for night - use a tripod, a timer and a longer shutter speed depending on how dark it is. A low ISO of say 400 or so and use the 300 guide. Focal length divided into 300 for the length of the shutter. 🙏💖🤗

Great video John and the D800 was my first full frame camera. I LOVED it! Truly a beautiful camera and it was from there I got the D750, D810 and then the might D850. They were/are all great. I like it when people can do great stuff with an old gear. Last year I have been shooting film B&W on 40+ year old cameras. That has both been fun and and a learning experience - makes me a better photographer I think. This video motivates me to get my gear out and shoot birds. That should not be so much challenge for me because I primarily shoot sports.

The two are very similar for sure but sports is sometimes more predicable. 😂 The really cool thing about going back to old tech is you have to think about every shot - especially with film. And I agree, it does make you a better photographer for sure. My daughter shoots clothing and events, old cameras, all film ..... and with flash. She gets a lot of work too. I bought a Nikon 200-500 a couple af years ago for my D800 that i still use. Spent a whole day at the zoo shooting tack sharp images handheld. Talk about old gear - go to the library and pick five random issues of Nat Geo magazine, one from each decade and look at the images in there....

D800 is awesome for megapixel count and color but now I have the d750 and love taking pics with it. Smaller files, faster shutter speeds, can handhold at longer shutter speeds with no blur issues and a little lighter.

Adrian, I have one as well. I keep meaning to go out with it and this amazing lens. I like the smaller file size and the D750 to my eye, has a brighter color that I love. For me, photography is about color and character as well as tech. I switched to Canon for tech (and color) and although I love Sony AF, the color to my eyes is flat. I will forever prefer Nikon color over all others in a DSLR (the D800 and D3200 are my favorites). The newer cameras have a cleaner image at a higher ISO and that is appealing I have to say. With this in low light, I have to get my shutter speed really low and I miss many shots. However...... even with the dead pixels .... this body will remain my all time favorite. It has a D ring and so I keep one clip on the lens, and one on the camera. I have a variety of configurations but the bottom line - always one on larger lenses and one on the camera. Thank you!! They each have their own advantages. I really like seeing all my settings and reviewing in the EVF and the live view part of it..... but I like the "real" photographer feel of the OVF. And, I do find it easier to find my subject with and OVF!! 🤗🙏❤

My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I just LOVE what I get out of that camera. My photography really began to progress very quickly after I bought it. I agree. It is the camera that I will measure everything else against afterward.

It seems that it was specifically designed to be manually operated very easily and intuitively. That's one reason I hate to change out to another camera. I don't want to have to relearn a different setup of controls when I've finally gotten very comfortable with this setup. It really works well.

Robert!!!! I am old school. I miss recording to a 2" 24 track, and listening to vinyl on a turn table - it just sounds richer and fuller. I can record it all myself here at home now, but it is not the same. I LOVE - LOVE this old DSLR and it is, and will always be my favorite. I can not tell you how much cleaning I have to do as this sensor has a couple of compromised spots..... and I still love it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I switched to Canon over Sony for the color, but this is still an amazing camera color science is ... amazing. My other all time favorite is the Nikon D3200! For me, and to my eyes, Sony is flat and lifeless. I LOVE their AF but it is useless without color. It baffles me when newer shooters can not see that. Again, I thank you for noticing and the comment. 🙏🤗💖

Anyway went all the way up to a D700 then started buying Canon up to the MarK iii. Something was missing, though. I figured out it was the Nikon color science thru looking at old pictures from my D3300. I pulled the trigger on a D800 a few days ago! I am excited to see what I can do with it. Loved it.I have a D800 and I really do like it,mostly for landscapes. Wouldn't it better to use the D800 in the DX mode? Less buffering, perhaps? If and when I do a bit of wild life shooting, I use my D7200 with the 300 F4 AF-S in 1.3 mode. It is quite rapid. Thank you.

Thank you!!! In all honesty, I am happy with the slower frame rate - less to go through. I do get one more or a few more when I have the grip on, but even that slow rate makes me happy. I will still say that of all the cameras I have owned and used, the D800 is still my favorite. As far as DX mode, I keep it in full and just crop in. There really is no difference in how sharp or how many pixels you are using - not like having a true crop sensor like the D7200. 🙏❤🤗

Mark!!!! Well, I think on some or most of the shots, I did show what my settings were. For the D800, since it is an older camera, I really try to keep my ISO no higher than 400 - that is what works for me. Any higher and what I get is not what I want - others may disagree. Aperture I try to keep low, although not fully as wide as each lens will go. Shutter speed...... I want it as high as I can get it depending on the light and the movement of the subject. I watch the meter down at the bottom in the view finder and try to keep it in the center using a combination of shutter speed and aperture - I try. The last thing is editing. Since I do it constantly and since Adobe Lightroom has gotten SOOOO much better, the tools in there make it super easy to clean and make the photos what you want them to be. I have to say that the newer cameras (my favorite brand is Canon but everyone has personal preferences). makes all of that so much easier. You can really push the ISO on the new camera bodies and the JPEGS right out of the camera are really awesome. I have used those on occasion, but I shoot everything in compressed RAW and JPEG so I can go through everything quickly. I would recommend renting a set up for a weekend or so to try something out. There are advantages and disadvantages to both the older and newer tech so the choice is up to you. Some things I prefer with the EVF on the new cameras and some on the old standard view finder. What ever you get - have fun - that is what it is all about!!! 🙏🤗💖

Peter - this is my all time favorite camera. ALL TIME FAVORITE. It was before and still is. I was just saying to Adrian that if I can find another that has not been shot to death, I may buy it. Mirrorless has some advantages - when you know how to take a photo, but this old gem is all manual with nothing more than autofocus. I have to think about each and every shot as you know. I shoot a D800 and have thought hard about a newer camera due to being able to get higher ISO. Has the D800 ever limited you in getting shots you wanted compared to what you get with the Z9?

Well, when I shoot the D800, I try to NOT let the ISO go over 400 but some of the newer software does clean up the noise really well. With the Z9, you can push the ISO to 12000+ and still get usable shots with no problem. They still need cleaning but they are amazing. With the D800 is I had a sitting subject, I would really keep the shutter speed down to keep the ISO low and on occasion, I would push the exposure compensation UP to get more light in and that worked. The other thing that is amazing about the Z9 over the D800 is the buffer. It makes me laugh when I get the buffer after seven shots on the D800 but hey, it was cutting edge at that time. Each has advantages and disadvantages. 🙏🤗💖

Hinton Stokes - Thank you!! I have always - always, really enjoyed shooting the D800. For me, for so long it was a go to. I had not picked it up in a while and when I got out with it, I fell in love with it all over again. So much so, that a went ahead and bought a new Nikon 200-500. I think in this video I was using my old 300 F2.8 - that little bit of reach makes a difference. My 500 F4 is also awesome on this. The reason I just bought the Nikon 200-500 is because when I rented the Z9 and adapted it to that, I was blown away. I was also really impressed on how if worked on this old gem. I have used my 70-200 F2.8 for many, many events (I gave it to my friend James when I switched to Canon), and although I have used it for wildlife with great results, the longer reach makes a difference. I keep my ISO low - 400 max but prefer 200, my shutter speed as high as I can for the light. With the correct exposure, the higher shutter speed makes photos sharper. I may have to do a video on how I set my old (and new) cameras up. It works for me With the older camera, i keep my aperture close to the base for the lens, and when adapting to mirrorless (my Canons are all adapted and the Z9 I rented I adapted my lenses to as well), no lower than F4. The longer focal length compresses the background really well I hope this helps a bit. 🙏🤗💖

Thank you, thank you TheWhipidhinio!! Everything in this video is hand held. I like a high shutter speed to keep the images sharp. With this lens and my 500s (Canon and Nikon), I keep the aperture also low - close to base or wide open. For me, that is one reason I am not a fan of something like the the Canon 800mm that is an F11 I think - light weight but too slow for my taste. For the most part, I prefer to hand hold but my Nikon 500 F4 is really heavy so that one is mostly on a gimbal. The Canon 500 F4 I can manage longer hand held. On all, I keep a fast shutter speed, low aperture and as low of an ISO as I can get away with for each camera body. But this amazing OLD OLD set up - all hand held!! Thank you TheWhipidhinio! 🙏💖🤗

For this, I plan to go to the new Canon R system because the AF is working super well and its color is not as digital as Sony. I loved this video because I was thinking of testing the shots with a 200mm 2.8. I think that something can be rescued and gain capacity in the buffer with the jpg

I have to say, I LOVE my Canon R5 - the eye AF tracking is AMAZING. The color is not the same as the Nikon color but is still so rich and vibrant - something I could not get with the Sony raw files. Color is super important to me. For sports, you can use a DSLR and get great results - that is where experience comes in, but with the new cameras, it is easier. Many are happy with Sony color so until you try it for yourself..... borrow or rent some gear if you can and see what works best for you!!! 🙏💖🤗

My go to is a d800e and d3. Don’t build cameras like this anymore. Both outputs allow super large prints. Feel more robust and likely to last longer than any mirrorless, I reckon. Plus colour rendition is amazing.

Mihai - I was hoping it was 7 😂 When I saw this, I had to go look and yes, only 4!! 4!!! Man, we were living in the stone age with only 4 FPS. LOL I had SOOOOO much fun shooting this and have been out with it again and again, I have been debating between a use one or more RAM for my computer at the moment. I really had forgotten how amazing this camera still is. It was the D850 that got a shopping 7 FPS in a burst. heck, i'm still using and LOVING my D700 and D750. i do not photograph BIF but use both for everything from street to landscape to portraits. i have several systems for different needs (Sony AND Canon) but i continue to be drawn to the Nikon dslrs. I have an important question. Actually my D800 has A 1.01/B1.02 firmware. I'm thinking about update the firmware and I've just read that the newest firmware (A1.11/B1.11) has some problems with sigma lens. Is that true? Should I update to A1.10/B1.10 than? Please help :)

Hi jacomir1234! I have the latest, or last firmware update that Nikon put our for this camera.... I did not use Sigma on this camera when I shot it all the time. I DID use the Tamron 150-600 so I can not say what the Sigma did. I do use a Sigma on my Canon cameras but that is different all together. I wish I had an answer for you. 🤗💖

You can put it in P mode that is similar, but the best thing is to learn the way aperture (F stop like the iris in your eye), ISO (gain that adds noise when up past 400), and shutter speed that needs more light as it gets faster to freeze the motion. It is a fantastic camera. There are new cameras for little more money that offer more. 🙏🤗💖

The 5D mk2 is another beast. So is the 5d classic. They rate up there with the D800's and the D810. The 5d classic is as much fun to shoot as the D800. But nikon colors rule.

I love the Nikon D800. So what, that is ten years old. EVF,s are not my thing.

Peter, this was a beast of a camera when it came out and it still is. It holds its own against all of todays cameras. I for got how much fun it was to shoot with a DSLR and going back and forth between this and Canon mirrorless, there are so many things I prefer with the old eyepiece. I actually find it easier to find my subject. Planning on, hoping to try the A9 to compare to this.... at some point. 🙏💖🤗

Sorry but thats obsolete to me I shoot a D810!!!!! Lets go out next week for a battle of the titans from 10 years ago. Amazing shots!!! No modern tech d810 vs d800 collab video let's go haha

I was laughing because I can shoot a whopping 7 FPS for a maximum of 8 or 9 and then it goes click..... click..................click................................click... it makes me laugh at what was top of the line tech. I do love shooting this amazing beast of a camera still and think it is the best camera ever made!! Listen to how it slows down and how loud it is. It is AWESOME!! 🙏🤗💖
