Thanks for the details describing the fitting trap adapter, and how deep the pipe goes into the fittings, as well as the explanation of the dry, measurement and glue fit sequence. This is so important in a glued up system. I have always used the compression fittings, but now I see that this is such a positive leak proof system I’m changing my approach, hey I’m 80 and never too late to change. I have watched several “professional” glue up videos and they don’t explain measuring, dry fit, and the glueing steps, everything is pre cut and they just stick it together. Then there’s the first time amateur that verbalizing everything using the wrong confusing terms, leaving out important details, and rambling about subjects that have nothing to do with the job at hand, as well as introducing their dog, or young child that is distracting them from the job at hand. Thanks again for focusing and going through the process is a logical and detailed manner, I really appreciate it.

Hello H H, You're welcome! I try and keep it as simple as possible so that anyone can follow. I am not a big fan of compression drain fittings. They are popular, but I know that I will have no problem with any pipes leaking do to expansion and contraction when glued. You have 20 years on me and I try and learn something new every day. Trying to keep the grey matter as fresh as I can. Thanks for the kind words and best of luck with any future projects! Al

Theoldkidd, I"ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out and you made it look very simple. I've replaced the counter tops and kitchen sink, but because this is an older home, the plumbing doesn't go into the back of the wall but rather straight down into the bottom of the cabinet. You've made it look simple and given me a great visual of how to move forward.
@TheOldkid88811 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave; I am glad it helped you out. The only issue that you may have is an s-trap which is not up to code, but will work. An automatic air vent should be placed on the system to allow air to enter and drain better. There are thousands of homes where the drain goes through the bottom of the cabinet and this is the case. It will still drain for you, but you may get a gurgling sound as it does. The air also helps the water flow better and scour the inside of the pipe. Thanks for commenting and I hope you get along well with the project! Al

I appreciate your videos. This is the first video I've seen which discusses how to align plastic pipe. I have to install a lot of short runs of CPVC pipe between two fixed points...between a supply header and a number of nearby drop elbows. I'm really concerned about alignment, since my pipe runs are short, they will be very rigid and any offsets (mistakes like pipes too long or elbows not plumb/level) will make the last piece impossible to fit. Are there any techniques for fitting short runs of rigid plastic pipe between two fixed points? Thank you. For example, at 6:45 in your video, when you are gluing the trap arm into the wall, it seems like if the pipe was a little long, or if the elbow wasn't perfectly plumb, the p-trap (the last piece), would not fit. I don't trust my ability to eyeball plumbness, so I've been using a torpedo level on fittings while I glue them, but it's cumbersome and I don't see anyone else doing it. Thank you again for any advice.
@TheOldkid8888 жыл бұрын
Hello Nicholas, Dry fitting the joints before hand and aligning them properly is generally what I do whenever I am making connections that have to be exact. With Abs you can get away with pencil marks to align the connections. With PVC and CPVC you can do the same only making sure the cleaner doesn't remove any marks that you make. I have done this on numerous occasions and it works great. I slide the pipe into the fitting and make a pencil on both the fitting and the pipe. If you are concerned that the pencil mark disappearing you can make a marks using a knife. This will not affect the fitting of the pipe. I have done this on occasion as well. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and good luck with the project! Al
@TheOldkid88813 жыл бұрын
@bookem1313 Hey book; You do glue both adaptors. One to the 90 and the other to the TY. All fittings must be glued for sure. I once saw a job where the homeowner did not glue them and they stayed together for a considerable long time before he had any leaks. Usually hot water will cause the fittings and pipe to expand and slowly pull apart if they are not glued. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with your project!!! Al

Hello B Charron; By your video I see you have a brass tailpiece that has to be changed. That is definitely a problem and where the water is coming from. That is the first thing to change. The plug in the back is there as a clean out I presume. You can unscrew that with a wrench as it should not be glued, but threaded in place. You can install an AAV and it will help to put air in your system. It also looks like the abs has dropped off of the brass tailpiece as well. Part 1 See below for 2.

@TheOldkid88812 жыл бұрын
Hello Monkeywrench864; I don't use 2 part wastes. I have never had a kitchen sink have only one side plugged and if I did run into that problem a plunger would take care of it easily. If you lose something down the drain such as a ring; it is just a matter of removing the clean out on the bottom of the trap and it will be there. I have been at this business for over 3 decades and have very few complaints. Thanks for your comments and enjoy the weekend! Al

Hello B Charron; You are talking about the nut on top of the adapter or is there a plastic tapered washer on your adapter? You should be able to replace the tapered nut or the plastic washer. After you have loosened your adapter nut,unscrew the tail piece nut off of the basket strainer and push the line down enough to slide the tail piece from the adapter. Hopefully it will move enough for you to take the tail piece out and install the new nut or washer. Tks for commenting and best of luck! Al

Good video. Thought I'd mention that perhaps using a P-trap that screws on might be a good idea, especially if you need to replace a Slip Joint Nut (and washer) on the Tail-piece. Also. Probably not too obvious, but it's probably a good idea to have a slope along the horizontal pipe (to the P-trap), by adjusting the Trap-adapters so that one end is slightly higher than the other. Thanks for posting.

Hi Al Thanks for responding. Your drain pipe system looks similar to mine. To answer your question, everything is black except the tail pieces which are grey. The joint between the trap adaptor and the p-drain is what gives way. I'll try re-glueing, as you suggest. I guess I have to take the whole p-drain off to reglue that joint. Also, is it ABS cement that I use? Thanks again. Your video is perfect.
@TheOldkid8888 жыл бұрын
+Helen Heffernan You are more than welcome! What is taking place with your situation is the glue you are using is probably for ABS pipe only which is black in color. In order to resolve the problem you either have to get a glue that is for both ABS and PVC. It can't be for just one. You can purchase this glue although it may be a little difficult to find. It is white in color. Or.... Buying new trap adaptors that are ABS. This way you will only need ABS cement and you will find that at every hardware store. That glue is generally yellow in color. This is probably the best way to correct the problem and you will have no further issues with it. If you can remove the p-trap as well you should get along fine. Take your time and plan it out. GL. Thanks for the kind words and let me know how you get along! Al

Great videos - I am plumbing a double sink in an island..how do I plumb in the AAV valve ?
@TheOldkid88810 жыл бұрын
Hello 4071DFCT; Thanks for the kind words! I would imagine your pipe is coming through the floor right now. I try and offset the drain line into the corner with 2 45's and then I install a TY or a drain Tee as some people call it and I face it towards one of the drains on the sink and pipe it as in the video that you watched. I place teflon tape on the threads of the AAV and screw it into a female adaptor. I crank them together hand tight. I hold the AAV to the bottom side of the of the countertop and take a measurement from the TY to the female adaptor. What ever the measurement is; I subtract an inch and then glue everything together. They recommend installing them as high as possible to the flood level rim of the fixture. I hope this helps you with your project! Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Al

Hello Monkeywrench864; Great comment! No harm in installing one if you wish. There would be no need for a cleanout as far as I am concerned as most kitchen sinks can be unplugged with a plunger. I would also install a cleanout if I was going into a slab, but almost all buildings in this area have basements and the cleanout is at the base of the stack as per code. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your weekend! Al

at 6:50 you propose to glue the nipple piece into the wall. Plumbing codes call for a trap adaptor to be used where you want to glue into the wall. The reason being you may what to take the drain apart to clean it or service it. You have it all glued tight and you would have to cut the drain out to snake the drain. Not having a trap adaptor is against code. Thanks

TheOldkid888 depends on where you live, those traps with the cleanout plug on bottom are not aloud to be used in ontario, i have never had a problem with the union traps, but it is code for bath traps(trap with out the union) to have a cleanout before the trap, in this case a 1 1/2 clean out before the trap so you have a place to put the snake if need be, but lets say they had a dishwasher, the dishwasher fitting would have to go before the trap as well, and the clean out, then it gets tight under there, so its better off just to use a union trap, code is different everywhere. thats why its not good to watch youtube for plumbing or electrical lol great video tho, very informative!

Just put in ABS fittings and you will see a list of them. www.lowes.com/pd/NIBCO-1-1-2-in-dia-ABS-Trap-Adapter-Fitting/3436942 Plumbing fittings used in Canada are identical to the U.S. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the project! Hello turbo; I never have used a p-trap with unions. I know it may sound hard to believe, but I look at it as 2 more places where there could be a leak. The cleanout plug in the bottom of the trap can be used if neccessary to unplug the sink, but it is my last resort. I try and stick to the plunger where ever possible. Most times the plunger will resolve my problem. The auger will go into where the plug is easily if not. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

@mustanggtm18 Hello; That is a good call on your part. Pipe 3 inch and under should grade a quarter of an inch per foot. Thanks for your comments and keep up the studies!!! Al

Hello pbr2424; This is the first I have heard of this! That is an interesting point! In Canada it is not required yet! I do like the reason for it though. I could actually get a snake in the clean out if necessary! I have done that before! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your day! Al

Quick question, is the pipe from the 90 supposed to protrude into the other pipe, as we are having issues with our sink and what I thought was a clog is actually the pipe extending into the other pipe a little over half way in
@TheOldkid8889 жыл бұрын
Douglas Klutts Are you talking about the tail piece coming into the top of the trap adaptor or the pipe coming from the elbow going to the TY? If it ABS pipe and fittings; the pipe will only go into the fittings 3/4 of an inch and no further. Have you tried plunging the sink yet? If you do this you must plug off the other side of the sink if it is a double kitchen sink. Use the plunger on one side and make certain you plug the other with the strainer and hold it down tightly. Thanks for commenting and get back to me when you get a chance! Al

The center pipe that connects the 90 and T, is that at a slight angle? Going to attempt fixing the plumbing under my kitchen sink (double sink). I’ve been told that the center pip needs to be at a slight angle for better drainage. Thank you!
@TheOldkid8887 жыл бұрын
Hello Rick, You're welcome! The pipe between the tee and 90 should be graded about 1/4 of an inch. A slight grade is correct. I have sen them grading the other way and work for years, but it should flow in the direction of the tee. Thanks for commenting and best of luck with the repair! Al

Hey Ken; I would say your house is an older style and having galvanized waterlines in a sure sign of that. If all the waterlines are galvanized or even a part of them are,then the only way to correct this problem is to replace them.I recommend pex,but it is up to yourself.I can almost guarantee that is your problem. Minerals in the water build up on the walls of the pipe and fittings and restrict the flow.I have seen this many times with galvanized. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your day! Al

What glue can I use to stop pipe leaks thanks
@TheOldkid8882 жыл бұрын
Hello Teddy boy, It depends on what type of pipe you are talking about. If you have joints that are made from both ABS and PVC you would need to remove the joint and install a new connection. If you have a tiny drip on an abs joint it is possible to apply a small amount of glue and let that dry and reapply a number of times, but really it is best to remove the joint and replace with a new one. Something to keep in mind is plastic expands and over time it is possible for that a joint if not properly made to crack and slide apart. Getting the proper amount of cleaner and glue on all plastics is crucial for no leaks in the future on PVC. I don't use cleaner when I make ABS connections, but the same thing applies to the glue with this type of pipe. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! Al

My fitting trap adapter's seal broke. Can I just replace the trap adapter or do I need to replace the whole T Y (or however you call it) along with the fitting trap adapter? Thanks!

Hello Anastasios Potamitis; Thanks very much! It is funny how different areas have different code regulations. After doing a fair amount of work over the years; the code has changed several times and I am sure it will swing back to some of the previous ways and they worked well for many decades. You are more then welcome! Thanks for commenting and enjoy the rest of the weekend! Al

Yes, the nut is completely stripped from the top of the adapter which I believe was cemented about an inch inside the T Y pipe. I am even wondering now how I can get the chewed up piece out of the pipe?

Hello andrey; I have been doing this work for quite a while and am intrigued by this comment. As far as the trap on backwards goes...have no idea where that came from. ABS is used on all residential buildings in this area unless it is a duplex or quad and then pvc is the code. I have used PVC many times and there is no difference in the installation except that a primer is needed with the glue where ABS can be joined with glue alone. Thanks for the comments and enjoy your day! Al

Hi, informative video, I did the same plumbing on a double kitchen sink, but the pipe after the 2nd sink goes straight then a p-trap. Im getting drain odour, is this because the pipe should go down after the 2nd sink drain? Thanks
@simonhenhoeffer89345 жыл бұрын
Yes it should dump vertically into the trap

Al, I know this is a kitchen sink but could you also do this for a double bathroom sink or would it be better to hid it behind the wall (2 p traps)?

@1winelover Hey winelover:I can relate to the name.If you are adding a dishwasher tailpiece to the basket strainer;it should be connected above the trap.It doesn't matter what side the dishwahser is on for that style of connection.If you are adding a plastic connection between the 2 strainers;it should be facing towards the trap.I will inbox you a video Imade for it.The pipe should grade towards the trap to allow all the water and food particles to drain and prevent an odour.Tks 4 commenting! Hello keninpeoria; You have good pressure to your meter!The first place I would check would be the outside faucet. If your pressure is low there then it is more then likely your shut-off coming into the house. I wish I could help you more on this. what are your water lines made of? Is there any galvanized material above the meter?Get back to me when you get a chance It is something simple;we just have to eliminate a few things first. Tks for commenting and looking forward to hearing from you.Al

Part 2. You should loosen both trap adapters and try and lift all of the ABS. By the look of the tailpiece it has definitely dropped somewhat. Step 1 is to replace the brass tailpiece.Pick up a basket strainer.This should have the tailpiece with it. Double check to make sure.You will need the basket strainer in the future. Measure the tailpiece you have to make sure the new one is the same length. Step 2 is lift the drainage system. Step 3 install AAV. Let me know how you get along! G.L. Al

Does the P trap need to be how low from the wall T? That horizontal pipe from the left sink keeps standing water in it. Is there something wrong?
@TheOldkid8885 жыл бұрын
Hello teaglet, Kitchen sinks are generally roughed in at 18 1/2 inches form the floor. This allows you to install the drain with no issues. You don't want to go any higher with it. A little lower will work fine as well. It sounds like there is not enough grade on it. I would simply loosen the nut on the trap adapter and slide the left side up the sink tailpiece. This should give it more grade and allow the water to drain properly. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and enjoy your day! Al

TheOldkid888 thanks for the reply, my cabinets are new, new quartz top, raising the sink, also on the right sink there is a disposal, lowering the “p” trap. Can’t seem to figure why this will not drain. I am feeling the wall drain is to high?

I have metal pipes but I don't think there is a trap adapter. They just put the Trap right on to the tail and that is where I have a leak. Before there was a pipe putty but it has disintegrated and now the pipe is leaking again at the connection. So I am trying to figure out two to fix it correctly.
