IMO she has the best horn of any of the active lakers

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a steam ship launched in 1942.

@@jacquespollet7999 - I grew up on the Lakes before all the lakers started getting scrapped and the elevators getting torn down in the 80's. The classic lakers were everywhere, but there were still a lot of the older boats working. They got ugly not long after this, like Michipicoten. Floating boxes with a straight hull and an angle to bring the bow and stern up. The old ships had style, the classic lakers had a solid and serious look to them, but in between and after was just industrial looking heavy equipment. I don't know of any commercial ships on the Lakes that are museums now. They're too big and most of them is not the least bit interesting. The forecastle of a laker might make a good display on its own.

@@jacquespollet7999 - The Beauties like Alpena gave way to the Classics during the fifties, and the Classics are rare now. Until the eighties, every little town around the Lakes had a grain elevator and a laker or two tied up alongside. We'd fish around them and you could walk up and touch them in winter if you cared to. The guys who worked on them were locals, either from your town or one exactly the same. Every town had retired sailors and current ones, and the boats were like talking about working in one factory or another. They were part of the landscape and so familiar that no one thought of them as anything romantic or especially pretty. I certainly never thought they were anything special until they got rare and the little ports got torn down. If you want to see the Lakes and lakers, come to Canada. We have the best lake, Huron and Georgian Bay, and we'll even attempt to speak French at you.

What's funny is I was tracking her on MarineTraffic over the past few weeks, and now this pops up in my recommendation section. What a wild coincidence.

My father, Captain Clement F. Morreau was master of the Wyandotte Chemical Ship the Alpena. Of their four ships this was the second largest and I think it was the first time I was able to sail on her back when I was a youngster. I believe this Alpena was built long before 1942. So I’m guessing it’s not the same as this Alpena in this video.

Just a little bit before the "classic" lakers with their straight hull lines. They were still thinking of style in 1942. If it doesn't cost more to make it look good, why not? Rake the funnel and give her some curves.
