I bought this watch 2 years ago. It was my first mechanical watch purchase. I bought it as a gift to myself on my most special day (my marriage). After almost 2 years now, having come across many luxurious watches, i am pretty sure there is no other watch that I would prefer over this one. It is just perfect in each and every way.

I purchased my Omega Speedmaster (861) in 1971 at the US Navy Exchange in Yokosuka, Japan. At the time, everyone was enamored with the moon landing and wanted to get a "piece of the action". I've recently had it overhauled by Omega. It had to go back to Switzerland, due to it's age. I was also advised to keep the dial and hands original to preserve the traditional look. The lume no longer works, but even after almost 54 years it still turns heads and starts conversations.

It is the best watch around. There are more well-finished watches, watches with better price-benefit ratios, and even more desired watches but this is a classic watch, elegant and sporty, very little changed in 60+ years and it is and will always be the first watch worn on the Moon.

Thanks for this enlightening history lesson. Gotta love me a Speedy, but I have to settle for the MoonSwatch Mission to Mars on a white tropical strap (Which runs +2 seconds per month). That white dial is stunning mind, wish they’d do that in a 39mm, then I’d think about it.

Winding it every day (3861)! Not every few. Yup, it's 50hr power reserve, but you want to wind that baby daily for best performance. Part of the morning ritual. 😘 I don't think there's a watch with a better story. And adopting Mr Daniels escapement on the more recent models is just the icing on the cake. For the watch buffs, some of GD's 'works of art' can be found in the Science Museum in London😉

I’ve owned this watch. I can be rightly accused of being fussy, but I didn’t enjoy the winding experience. The crown guards made it difficult and even a little uncomfortable for me. Given that is a manual wind, it eventually became a deal killer for me. I wish there was a non-vintage version without crown guards. Otherwise it’s perfect. I don’t see many other folks barking about this, so probably just bothers me more than most. 😊

2:52 After the tests NASA received the first batch of Speedmaster chronographs on April 23, 1965. The Gemini III mission was March 23, 1965 during which the crew Virgil Grissom and John Young each wore a battery-powered Accutron Astronaut GMT pilot watch and a manual winding Omega Speedmaster chronograph. Officially the Omega Speedmaster was flight-qualified on June 1, 1965 so Gemini IV was the first mission to officially use the Omega Speedmaster chronographs with James McDivitt and Edward White each wearing two Omega Speedmaster chronographs. Why, check video: " Ed White Gemini 4 Omega Speedmaster Spacewalk. 4 Speedmasters on Gemini 4 " Just check #AskOmega and find a dozen questions none of the KZbinrs can answer about the Speedmaster !

Is it harmful to the mechanism to let the larger second hand run continuously when wearing every few days?
@Rodolfoguerra129 күн бұрын
No. You can leave it running.

You can but why would you subject your mechanical watch to unnecessary wear?

Guess I’m used to seeing a larger moving second hand. All the watch videos show a moving second hand.
@Paul-tk2my10 күн бұрын
I’d want the 321 movement but I expect they’re rare. Whether a column wheel is better is debatable but you don’t get that jump when you start the chrono. It’s also got a bimetallic balance
