THEORY CORRECTION: The "I" Chord is really a C7, and not a C minor, even though the riff has the minor 3rd. For this reason, it's a C Mixolydian mode progression and not a C Dorian mode progression....However, both C Dorian and Mixolyidan will work well for improv....the only difference between these two modes is the major 3rd vs. minor 3rd. The minor 3rd will sound more bluesy like the main riff is.....The F and Bb major chords are both in these modes.

Good lord, little fret marker-dots that light up in time with the music. When we were kids, it was "tape it off the radio and try and figure it out". Yep. I'm that old ("Stranger Things" seems contemporary to me) - and only just learned of this song a while back. I play it in B, coz I get to use the open D.

why would you play the minor third of a pentatonic scale over the E natural that's in the C7 chord? It's a wrong note. at least throw in the major third

This is incorrect. the key is C major and the scale your playing over the top is the C mixolydian! you can play the minor pentatonic because there's only one note outside of the scale and that note (the minor 3rd) is blue note.

The three chords in this song are C7, Bb and F - so it's actually a C mixoldian tonality - definitely not at all C major. But being it's a blues vibe of course the minor 3rd is gonna work and it's part of the melody - so for improv, dorian or mixolydian are good choices - both have a b7 and a major 6, but one has a minor 3rd and the other has a major 3rd. What exactly is incorrect?
