What we honestly have in this country at this point is collective idiocracy. People have lost the ability to examine data and think critically. It blows my mind how absolutely stupid this country has become. Yep. The fact that "people can have very different answers" to a question on abortion asked in different ways doesn't really matter. Each person seems to have exactly one view on things like fascism, racism, and misogyny: either for, or against. Those are inherently divisive modes of thought, and being friends with people of the opposing view doesn't seem to change anyone's mind, it just paints a target on half the people's backs.
@s.davidcox7523Ай бұрын
Agreed. Tens of millions of people just voted for someone who is openly hate-mongering and openly wishes to have dictatorial power. Those voters want a "strong man." They are not being duped or hoodwinked or manipulated. As an aside, this video was clearly made before the election. She talks a lot about abortion as an example, and abortion was a non-issue in who people voted for. Missourians passed an amendment protecting abortion while overwhelmingly re-electing Josh Hawley and Donald Trump. Finally, I'd like to ask Ms. Ripley in this video--who seems like a perfectly nice person--what were good people in Germany supposed to feel in the late 1930s? There comes a time when moral condemnation is the only righteous response. Human beings tend to wait too late.
@dvvineverАй бұрын
I think the concerns of authoritarianism based on the rhetoric, behavior, and purposefully lying of a factionalist candidate in order to intimidate, threaten, or incite the worst reactions and binary thinking of the electorate is strikingly similar to movements to shutdown thinking in 1930s fascist movements. This is not just a normal election with a normal candidate. This is a person who lied, tried to force his way into power after the 2020 election, was indicted for multiple crimes and convicted in another set of crimes. He also said exactly what he intends to do including going after the press, political opponents, and even legal documented immigrants, and on his recent speeches he doubled down by stating that he made promises that he intends to keep. Those might also include being a dictator on day one. So this isn't some simplistic political divide of parties, this is existential to all Americans and democracy itself if this individual runs with the power he believes he can use against political opponents, to consolidate powers of the executive by gutting experts and departments that provide critical protections from run away greed and short term profit seeking, or weakening intelligence and law enforcement agencies that defend America which should never be used as political weapons or weakened to such a degree that they can no longer perform their very necessary critical roles in the 21st century. When a person openly plans to abuse power and demands more than the constitution would allow, and they do it for their own purposes and benefits than helping uphold rights and protect the constitution, it could easily be described in some ways as evil or selfish intent that intends to cause harm to others by design.

But that doesn't change the fact that slavery IS evil. The racism it's founded on IS evil. And I'm willing to engage with anyone who's willing to change their mind. But there ARE some people who equate those kinds of philosophies and their identities. They don't just BELIEVE in racism, they ARE racist, and have no intent to change. Those people aren't just doing something evil. Those people ARE something evil. And if I have something in common with them, I'm doing something very, very wrong.
@kukoistava.Ай бұрын
I don't disagree with this mindset; it's a healthy way to be, and I aspire to it. But I'm also at conflict with it: There's no common ground I can find with those who are abusive, or who tolerate and dismiss abuse. It may well be true that they are just protecting what and who they love, but if their doing so denies another person's safety, we will never be on common grounds. Any victim of abuse knows well that the abuser will require you to meet their perspective; and never yours. We must unequivocally reject any tolerance of abuse. Yet, so many in this country let a person known to abuse power into a position of power. I don't wish to hear that they did so for economic policies, or whatever their reasons. This is not just a political season: We will be extraordinarily lucky to see another American president in 2028, or ever.

Ripley shows only a glimmering of understanding of the true source of the problem, which extends far beyond the example of the "good or evil" labels. In general, adjectives and adverbs and labels that semantically act like adjectives are actually vague abbreviations for relative comparisons to unstated alternatives. For example, consider the adjective "big." The statement "X is big" really means "X is bigger than some Y that I haven't specified." The threshold between "big" and "not big" is undefined, and many things could be compared to X using the "bigger than" relation, so the use of the adjective "big" creates a misleading false dichotomy. When playing the game Twenty Questions, only a loser would ask "is it big," but the comparitive question "is it bigger than a breadbox" elicits a helpful answer. Ripley's example, the abortion issue, has more than two possible policies. So it's a vague & misleading false dichotomy to say "I support the right to abortion" or to say "I oppose abortion." A statement such as "I support X" means a relative preference for X over some unspecified Y. An example is the Obamacare health insurance proposal in 2009/2010. Polls asked voters if they "supported" it. Although a majority said they opposed it, the majority was comprised of two groups who had opposite preferences: those who thought it didn't go far enough (toward single-payer Medicare For All), plus those who thought it went too far (away from private health insurance). Pundits treated the majority "opposition" as if they all sided with the nascent Tea Party, abetting their false claim that a majority favored private health insurance. False dichotomies with political implications are the most insidious. Good or evil, support or oppose, right or wrong, approve or disapprove, etc. They can be used manipulatively to lump together people who have opposite reasons for describing something the same way. For another example, two people who say they "disapprove" of Joe Biden might be abbreviating opposite preferences: one of them might mean s/he prefers Trump over Biden, and the other might mean s/he prefers Bernie Sanders over Biden. Or suppose 75% say "we're on the wrong track" and 25% say "right track." That makes the current track appear very unpopular, but the 75% might be comprised of 35% who prefer a track that's further to the "left" and 40% who prefer a track that's further to the "right." In this case, the current track is preferred by a 60% majority (35%+25%) over a track further right and by a 65% majority (40%+25%) over a track further left, so the current track is actually the most popular. Ripley claims without evidence that the best solution is for individuals to get to know people with whom they disagree. But an alternative solution is for polls to ask people to rank alternative policies in order of preference, then use that data to count all the head-to-head majorities. This would identify the alternative(s) at the medians. (Loosely speaking, the most popular compromises.) For example, a voter's order of preference "Sanders Harris Trump" should be counted as a preference for Sanders over Harris and a preference for Sanders over Trump and a preference for Harris over Trump, in the three head-to-head comparisons. It's possible that an alternative that's the favorite of very few people is actually preferred head-to-head over the other alternatives by majorities (like the current track in the previous example). Ripley claimed without evidence that the reason why people use the false dichotomy "good or evil" is because that makes them feel good. But the ubiquity of false dichotomy adjectives in human languages strongly suggests a different reason: the convenience of abbreviations for relative comparisons to unstated alternatives. It's much easier & quicker to not specify an alternative(s) being compared. Also, many people presumably have trouble thinking clearly enough to figure out and describe to themselves an alternative to compare.

My fundamentalist Christian siblings are so fundamental in their Biblical beliefs that there can be no core or flexible discussion: I consider this understandable but intractable. This is a wall that cannot be breached as to political voting or political understanding is concerned. Two things prior Trump just being elected were, for me, that democracy and The Constitution have been my key issues as an American and now even those appear to have been breached.

I don’t think it’s just a loss of *intellectual* standards, though they’ve definitely fallen by quite a bit. A bigger issue is the complete absence of morality. Simple things like commitment to telling the truth even when it doesn’t help your side win, commitment to equality of worth, not lying, cheating, stealing, harming or wishing harm on other people. These things are critical. You can’t have Trust without first being trustworthy. You can’t make peace if the other side doesn’t have the right to exist and disagree. You can’t create a culture willing to share when everyone is cheating to get ahead.

The GOP could disavow Trump, put forward *any* other candidate, denounce Jan 6, and distance the party from the MAGA cult. They could do that. And then I could take their worldview seriously. Until that happens, as far as I'm able to be concerned, the American political system has one legitimate party. It's the Democratic party, and Republicans since 2016 have made it this way.

Oh, how silly of us! We could’ve just put our petty differences about kids in cages aside and REASONED with the fascists this whole time? Has anyone tried this life hack??? What were the results?
@themeangeneАй бұрын
Kids weren't put in cages. They were separated starting with the Bush and Obama administrations because adults were trafficking kids with them. The Trump administration was separating kids so they could make sure they were actually with family. You don't keep kids with their abusers. Since that policy was abolished in 2021 over 360,000 kids have been victims of human trafficking. That's just KNOWN CASES. Is that more moral? This is why I voted for Trump despite being a Democrat. I actually looked into this topic. Please do the same.

The rise of social media, which was supposed to usher in more freedom, but instead sorted misinformation and conspiracy into vast asymmetrical pockets of the psychological landscape. This environment fosters a preference for populist leaders who offer simple solutions to complex issues, appealing to emotions rather than reason. Many Americans lack the capacity to engage meaningfully with democratic practices, leading to a potential erosion of democratic values. It's stone age hardware operating in a technological shitscape where it's not about hunting for food and surviving in a world with the constant threat of being eaten by dire wolves, cave bear, tigers, or 'other bipedal hominids'... Instead it's a new world where the struggles are internal and the emotional distractions are constant. The decline and eventual failure of democracy will be in large part attributed to the cognitive and emotional limitations of the populace. We're essentially all to blame because, even if you know that your reasoning is sharp and critical thinking is finely tuned, you still failed at helping your fellow Americans to understand the trap they are sliding into. You may believe that you're more skilled at regulating your emotional response, but the internal dialogue in your head is making you dizzy. It's not them, it's all of us. Well, except for the iterations of vainglorious oligarchy waiting to take command, & over the next 20 years demonstrate a new measure of dysfunctional American governance.

Nah, it's team Sports MORALS. That's the problem with this Cult. It's not about politics to them - it's about imposing their flawed morals (by any simple standards of decent morals) on the country. It definitely changed Roe vs. Wade and the woman's life who just died in TX trying to get pre-natal help. It also changed my life when the decent Party instituted the Affordable Care Act. Don't both sides it and reduce it to "politicians will be politicians". This is much worse now. Nobody would say the Naz*s were "just another political party".

I think it is a high bar to convince someone who is a believer and if that belief is based on both deep seated biases supported by decades of confirmation. Good example is trying to convince someone that there is no god or there is a god. It is easy to say that all I need is to give you the facts, but for abstract qualities, there may not be any facts.

Simplistic view that a country has to fire all nukes if they gonna fire one. I don't have the words to explain, but there are situations where tactical nukes could be used by Russia and allies have plans for how to retaliate - many many plans that dont involve responding with nukes. I've read that the US is positioned to hit where it really hurts if Russia uses a tactical nuke, that in theory would convince them to back down. Just not sure they would back down but by not responding with nukes, its not a good idea for Russia to keep using nukes.

@ please explain. Most of us Europeans don’t give a shit about the Ukraine, we had a great relation with Russia and we Dutch even voted against Ukraine joining us in the first place. The Ukraine holds absolutely no strategic or economic value to us. Furthermore, we’re also running to the right. Migration is a very big problem and our housing and economic situation isn’t in the great shape either. We don’t need woke or environmental bullshit, we need action. Damn, the UK is even becoming the first Islamic nuclear power in the world. Civil war is around the corner only because the left let it all happen with their good intentions politics. Well newsflash, the world doesn’t work that way. I’m glad you guys voted Trump so our leaders will finally wake up and realize they need to act in the peoples interest and not their own. And be honest, Kamala would’ve been an absolute disaster. They’re lying about the 2020 elections (20 million votes just don’t go up in smoke). You’d be stuck with Pelosi and the rest of the democratic establishment who’re only filling their own pockets. (There’re plenty of examples). They didn’t open the border because they felt sorry for those people, they only wanted cheap labor. Trump on the other hand runs the country as a business. And he speaks will all leaders around the world. Communication is important, something the democrats don’t know a fucking thing about. (Just look how they lost the election 🤣).
