The One Piece Ban List Went Too Far In A Few Places

justin talks about the new one piece ban list. Whitebeard, Zoro, and Trafalgar law are all now unpayable. As are every other rogue red deck. oddly enough the 4 banned cards are receiving future reprints. A good ban list is now more mixed than it has to be.

4 days after the ban list was announced, Bandai announced that the ban list would be revoked December 8th. Bandai has done the correct thing and listened to the players. Especially when compared to other TCG companies this has been an astonishingly amazing move. We will see if red needs more hits after set 5, but this gives them time to plan out a better course of action.

Way too far indeed... The core consistency cards are too much to ban. dadan and buggy for example are just extra searcher without an entire archetype revolving around them, yet dadan could be splashed in and exploited other searches even; The actual problem. Nami is just good/popular because she is in one of the only worthwhile archetypes for red. Like really what else would they play? izo? They are all more costly worse versions of straw hats and their main big cards with unique personality are limited now... Yellow has similar issues with big mom pirates being the only worthwhile archetype to play... Wano for example it seems the effects are all just not nearly as good... Actually give us good alternatives if you want more variety, don't remove essentials just because it is played often... It is because of your failure to give solid alternatives and ones that don't just get nerfed into the ground...

I was already debating a purple leaning deck with RP Luffy, either going Impel Down route or Baroque Works. It was clear that Straw Hat was the best support for Luffy, but I think there are...passable alternatives. Really poor timing since the other deck I was considering was Enel...which would have liked those 8c Katakuri, if not for the $20+ dollar price jump :(

you do have some options, even if they're rough. RG Law can go back to running a modified version of set 1 cards or use the film package or use nerfed Izo momo RP Law has really good support coming in OP5 so just wait untill then Zoro just instead runs other generic red goodstuff and a bunch of one off's. maybe some of the promo stuff as well. RP Luffy is the only one that really can't pivot as it was propped up by generic red cards. Overall these definitely aren't meta, but should still be somewhat playable.

I don’t know if the the bans were justified as I’m quite new to the whole one piece thing, but as a Pokémon player, looking on limitless tcg and seeing the big 3 red decks with 60% of the tournament points, whitebeard having 1/2 of that 60%, that’s just insane. A banlist was needed, but obviously it’s just not possible to make everyone happy with what cards were banned/weren’t. I do agree that I don’t like them banning leaders, and they royally fucked up in the marketing department for releasing prebuilt decks with banned cards, and marketing cards like nami whitebeard to all hell, but at least we’ll see how things go after the banlist repeals and maybe we can keep Nami and leader

I cannot agree with many of your points. Rob Lucci comparison with Ace isn't fair as Lucci costs one less and rush is supposed to be red's specialty. This is how it was with Duel Masters too. Certain colors specialize and are better at certain things and if another color will have the same effect it will somehow have more of a drawback. This isn't always the case but it's something to consider. Black has other things like being immune to destruction by effects. It's easy to say give Whitebeard an errata but there is no easy way to give an errata to that card without making it either broken or useless. They should have never printed it like that in the first place but I understand they wanted to do the 6000 thing because it's Whitebeard. It's the only ban I fully agree with. Nami should not have been banned. She is a searcher like other colors have searchers. The reason Red is so good is because the Leaders are broken and their aggressive style is favored by the don mechanic, a core gameplay mechanic which I'm not too fond of. Truth is One Piece has been unbalanced from the start and I fear they will have no choice but to fix it with power creep, eventually more red searchers will come that do the same as the cards banned and they will match that giving the other colors broken stuff as well. If the game becomes like BT10 Digimon and up I will be sad but I do think it could happen.

Disagree. Whitebeard is insanely unfair. No matter what cards you ban, you can’t restrict his ability to apply pressure and draw 1 extra card every turn. It’s either they errata and nerf him or ban him which is much cheaper anyways. He gatekeeps and punishes other leaders and newcomers too hard.

Eh idk i think whitebeard being 6k with access to extra cards in hand made him functionally broken rather than just having a really good ability. As well nami was the best searcher in the game for by far the best archetype which is about to get even more support. Nami isn’t color locked let’s you pick up characters stages or events and let’s you look at five cards and let’s you bottom deck rather than trash

@@XxD1nklebergxX Proper alternatives is the issue. Nami wasn't the issue, their are others like her. The issue is that she is part of one of the only worthwhile archetypes in red, and dadan exploited her making her much better... They have an issue of making anything but the first archetype worthwhile. One of the only ones that brakes this is white beards and they were so broken that they got limited... Only other things that come close were archetypes that are far far more niche that fit in far fewer decks viably. Yellow is in a similar issue. The wanno cards are all just no where near as worthwhile to play... They need to be giving us alternatives rather than banning core consistency cards just because they nearly only made 1 archetypes in each color worthwhile...

Great points with Marco and Dadan, however I have some things to add that might be a little unpopular. 1. Edward Newgate (leader) being banned does in no way in and of itself mean people have wasted money. Ace is still a leader that meets ALL restrictions for the Whitebeard Pirate Archetype with the sole exception of Moby Dick's buff to the leader. Moby Dick being banned, however, somewhat makes this negative point moot. Comparing Newgate being banned to Vivi is in no way a fair comparison because there is an alternate leader that players can use in regards to Newgate. 2. Nami is in fact the best searcher in the game, and has been for some time. The fact of the matter is most of Red's best cards (albeit mainly forward pressure) comes from the Strawhat archetype. The two singularly best rush cards in the game are both Strawhats being Zoro and Luffy, the only counter event card that was strong enough to limit so far is Strawhats, Red's 1 cost blocker (which plays extremely well into their game plan) is Strawhats, and the list goes on (though with less meta-defining cards). If Nami wasn't as good as players made her out to be, then she would not be used in nearly 100% of top red decks. It does suck that these cards are getting reprinted in upcoming sets and premium products, but it is funny you compared One Piece to Yu-gi-oh without mentioning that Konami more often than not puts one or more banned cards in their structure decks they release. Overall, it is a real shame Law got caught up in the bans, but, honestly, Red has deserved a significant nerf since OP-01. It's honestly crazy how it has been the only color that has been here since day one that has not been subject to power creep. (Edited for Grammar)

Konami does definitely not put banned cards "more often than not" in structure decks. I'm not saying it's never happened but it's so few and far between I'm struggling to come up with an example of the top of my head

Looking at it now, you're right. Sorry. To be honest I have not played Yu-gi-oh since back when they put Monster Reborn and Pot of Greed in every single structure deck, around 2005-2010. Only took Konami 10+ years to start getting it right. Good thing this card game is only going on its, what, 1st or 2nd year? But yea, I do give it to you. Apparently, they have gotten better about it.

Just because nami is good doesn't mean she should be banned... Should not obliterate the consistency cards of an archetype. Should only focus bans and limitations on actual problem cards, not cards that see much play just because they are solid. Jeopardizes that engine/toolkit and removes fun playstyle options within it. Instead make alternative engines with their own playstyles that are actually worth using in place of the prominent ones and give other colors their own. They did well in that regard with yellow, but they fail nearly always to horizontally progress in adding alternatives worth playing. For example with izo & whitebeard pirates, it is the closest fix to the loss of nami. They are in many cases just worse versions of already established straw hat cards, boring/worse strats in general, and/or limited to ONLY whitebeard archtype type leaders. The only worth while cards were too good and thus limited or vanillas... Even land of wano is kinda trash compared to the big mom pirates so yellow faces the same issue... Dadan was the big issue. Because of it's pure versatility, and made every other searcher and counter that much better. Consistency cards are fine, we need them to help mitigate just feeling like the game is luck of draw. The cards exploiting them, their card pools, and lack of reasonable alternatives are the issue.

It isn't even that bad. Yugioh just made too many additional things they could do that made it broken... No cost to play so you can potentially just keep playing over and over if you setup your special summons right, also things like links helped further the comboing nightmare to go more wild, and so on. I mean, if you got the right start to spark the link summoning, they could self containably chain off for you practically... The game mechanically power creeped itself into a problem state. Love the consistency yugioh has, but it started REALLY going out of hand around 2015-2017 range. I forget the exact date, but I do know it was around the approach and entrance of links. It had a nice comboing and board setup/break down balance up to that point for the most part at least. This doesn't have nearly any of that. Those searchers are mostly just consistency cards. Which is good for a competitive match. Unless all your other systems can lead to what yugioh can do. Yugioh, you may only need 1 card to achieve everything you need...

I don't think it's that bad but it's certainly not good either. Bandai has a fair bit of goodwill with the community they just need to make sure the next events go smoothly and not to pull anything scummy. Those premium products effected by the ban list should offer refunds if the buyer wants them. Honestly though if nami came off the list and was replaced with a limited big mom it would be fine.

Nami was too much, and the alternatives are trash... Should never touch the core consistency card(s) of entire archetypes. Searcher dadan and buggy for example are more just extra searchers. One of which went too far. The main alternative is an whitebeard pirates and izo. Basically an archtype that is heavily nerfed in its big cards and all the other cards are basically worse straw hats. Like the 2 cost blocker vs 1 cost, the 2 cost don attacher vs the 1 cost nami don attacher, the gain 2k one turn character vs the sanji that did that with life to become even stronger than that and can be a 2k counter if needed...

No... it is not a feels bad, it is the risk of playing a tcg, if you play the strongest most broken deck, you can kinda expect some cards getting banned. It is the risk. Been playing mtg for ages and that happens ALL the time. It is the nature of tcgs.
