I didn't know what a fortnight was until I started watching Premier League football coverage as a teenager. In general Americans just say "2 weeks." Fortnight sounds cool, but it's also complicated. Both terms have 2 syllables, so why not just say "2 weeks"?

No...that doesn't make sense. In your example you're describing different adjectives, which are applicable to different usage situations. Fortnight is a noun. Besides, who says Americans don't use adjectives more descriptive than "happy?" Pick up any novel or newspaper.

She is also married to an American and she was saying that her husband and in-laws frequently use expressions that she just thought were common things MOST Americans say, only to find out that they're things ONLY his family says. This is a promotional junket, where actors in a movie usually stay in this room for the better part of the day, while different press interviewers come and go to get these 5 minute interviews. This format, where the actor is in one shot while the interviewer is in the other and they're all sitting in director's chairs is almost always how it goes. If you look up something along the lines of "Emma Stone/Ryan Gosling La La Land Interview" on youtube, you'll find several videos with the same format.
