Hamilton is one of the major reasons the Ravens defense is so stout this year. He is already considered one of the best defenders, let alone DBs, in the NFL. He is a student of the game , while giving out lessons. His versatility gives McDonald looks from his defense that other teams just can't mimic and at times comprehend. Being a Notre Dame fan and a resident of Baltimore City , I can say , his presence on this Ravens team along with the acquisition of Roquan Smith has changed this defense into something really special. Kyle is a unicorn. He reminds me of another big DB from Notre Dame. Bobby Taylor. Who I had the pleasure of watching play while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, before the Ravens came to town I was an Eagles fan. During those years , tickets to Eagles games were pretty cheap. I mean who wants to pay to watch Ty Detmer quarterback your team? Cool video. @@VinegarAndSaltedFries That’s valid. But it’s just now becoming more common. Just like every position it’s evolving but it’s definitely not something that has always occurred. It’s still far and few in between but more often than those guys generation.
@VinegarAndSaltedFries2 жыл бұрын
@@TrillVilla5 I mean I agree and disagree with you. I’m a Steelers fan so trust me when I say I’m not underselling Ed or Troys talent at all. They are awesome players. But the fact is The Safety position needing to become more versatile is a direct result of how the league has changed it’s offensive concepts…And if you look at the Seahawks defense over the past 5 years you’ll see how the older style of defense isn’t able to keep up from a roster construction standpoint. Combine that with Players and Coaches reevaluating what makes a good safety at both the college and NFL level and it’s honestly a wonderful mess of things all having to do with that position. I honestly Think while innovation can be fast from a coaching standpoint the adaptation to those innovations can be quite a slow process especially when it comes to a talent evaluation standpoint. How many years after Michael Vick did it take for many more teams to look for a dual threat QB. It’s not a simple instance. Even look at Cam Newton for a more recent example. For a while he was in the league with a bunch of traditional pocket passers because the stigma was Michael Vick and Cam Newton are just freaky talents that are outliers….but if you look at the league today and the amount of QB’s that rush quite a bit. It’s a slow process to get coaches at high school and college levels to understand hey yeah this kid might be a decent QB and give them the shot…and then the scouts have to also evaluate for that and teams have to draft them. And all of this for the person to just get a shot at playing/practicing. This is actually are really interesting conversations so thanks for having it with me. Typically especially for the Safety position kid’s don’t grow up practicing and wanting to be a safety. Usually they play another position and get put in the position of Safety at the college level so it’s one of those weird positions where a large variety of sizes and speeds occur. I love the position and am excited to see players like Derwin James develop even further.

its because NFL coaches still work off the defined roles from how they understand the game in a conservative way. Meaning it is VERY easy to miscast guys on defense and have them not produce properly. Or have the right talents to support their versatility.

The last player that had almost universal praise as a prospect that Alex and I agreed was a tad overrated was Isaiah Simmons. Similar players. Huge "safeties". Simmons is a better athlete. Hamilton has better instincts but both might not have a true position in the NFL. Simmons is a off ball LB with some versatility. I like Hamilton but people saying he's the best player in the draft and a top 5 pick I completely disagree with. I lean more pick 16-32. He's a good athlete but not a freak like everyone is saying. Much slower then Derwin and Jeremy Chinn and Dugger. Not as explosive either ( still good explosive numbers tho ). He's also not as physical as any of those guys. He has really good length and changes direction well for a big DB. I think he'll be really good against the TE's. But you can find guys like Eric Rowe and Jayron Kearse and others for cheap.

Its the Simmons/JOK thing for him. I think the issue for Hamilton he's not nearly as fast. His 3 cone and explosiveness are all there. I think the reason for concern is him trying to cover anyone like a Calvin Austin in the slot, or getting lost and allowing guys to beat him deep. If he can't cover, then he's just a linebacker hybrid and selecting someone that high isn't winning football. Personally I think he's more linebacker than safety. A 4.7 pro day 40 isn't good enough. Its fine for college but in the pros, those guys are too crafty.

Alex! Great video as always, I think that in terms of his usage I would love to see him in a way that Derwin James was/is used. I think he can play in 2hi, 1hi (sometimes), but I also would l love to see him in a defense that uses him in the slot, box, and against tight ends and RB’s, but I don’t wanna see him with some non-creative defensive coordinator. I think he can do a lot of different things and will he just fine in the NFL

Thanks brother, good to hear from you! Yes, his DC will have to utilize primarily his versatility to get the most out of him. I'd hate to see him get slotted into just one position

Thank you Alex! I knew Hamilton wasn’t a slam dunk player. He’s a generational athlete but not a generational player. He has tackling and coverage issues. If a team knows how to use him, he can dominate. However, you have to be sure.

y’all criticize everything lmao. i’ve never heard someone say that they have “concerns” about someone having amazing versatility until now. “ i don’t know where he will play in the nfl” doesn’t matter. because he plays well everywhere. and saying he doesn’t have good range is crazy. his range is unbelievable. and you can just look at one play and say “he doesn’t take good take good angles in the run game” when you literally showed plays of him taking good angles in the run game. and same thing for saying “he doesn’t square up to tackle well” even though you previously showed clips of him squaring up players and making good tackles. he’s arguably the best safety prospect i’ve ever seen, and easily the best player in this entire draft and it isn’t close. he has no weaknesses. you can’t just look at a player have one bot great play, and then proceed to say, “it’s one of his weaknesses.” im sorry but horrible breakdown

Good video but I definitely feel like you either needed more games to study or more time with the film. He has little issues squaring up and making hits especially in the open field and I can absolutely see him being more than capable or making plays in the box and at the los. But I agree with you, He would have major issues covering any speed slots in the league. Big slots and TEs He can do very well against though. I also don't think it's on him to define a position for himself. The best coaches define roles around guys skill sets and with all his tools I think it comes down to the system and the DC. 110% a boom or bust.
@AlexRollinsNFL2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dru! I mentioned in the video that he has trouble squaring up tackles, it seemed like way too often he wasn't getting his hips through and punishing dudes straight backwards. I liked the way he closed from depth more than I liked the way he played in the box, but yeah, only had a limited couple of games to watch. Any others you recommend?

He's exactly like Isaiah Simmons. Can do a lot of different things but not one thing really well. Doesn't really have good run stopping skills. Needs to go to a team/system like the Patriots where he'll be used to his potential. If the Jets or Giants take him they'll use him as a one high safety and he'll struggle.

Been saying it for a while. If someone takes Hamilton in the top-ten, they are going to regret it. The guy is FAR from being the "unicorn" player he is made out to be. The guy ran a 4.59 forty. The media and KZbinrs have been hyping him up for months. They like to play that clip where he runs from way across the field to intercept a pass against Michigan but the pass had nothing on it. It was lofted and QB telegraphed what he were he was going with the ball because he not only pump-faked a pass to THE ONLY RECEIVER on that side of the field but also ROLLED OUT to that same side of the field.. My mother could have seen that pass coming. He's a decent player but, I would be willing to bet, he'll probably end up being the 3rd best safety in the draft. Watch and see.
@faceofabeatenupbum-p4ppedc352 жыл бұрын
I have questions about his speed for sure. And despite his size he's a finesse player. I don't see him flying around and making tackles like you'd want to see from a top safety prospect.
