I am such a filthy commander player, I always forget how much MORE of an issue the one ring is in multi-card formats. 1 turn of protection and a few cards drawn is often enough to swing a commander game in the caster's favor, but being able to cast the one ring up to 4 times, getting the protection effect every time and resetting the only downside of the card... that's nuts.

I built a turbofog deck in Historic using it as the Fog effect. I have no problems getting it back repeatedly via Gaea's Blessing and/or Karn the Great Creator, and I keep one copy in the sideboard instead of the deck just in case. I win by looping Secret Rendezvous/Gaea's Blessing with at least one Smothering Tithe down. (It's an 80-card Yorion deck but I don't really have problems grinding my deck down to the point I can stack it every turn or two with Gaea's Blessing.) It wins by forcing the opponent to draw their deck out, or with Aetherflux Reservoir and Bolas' Citadel, or with a giant Druid Class land.

I’m crossing my fingers that WOTC won’t make another MH set. I think after three sets they absolutely have enough data to show that direct-to-modern cards are inherently bad for the format, it’s more of a question now of whether their hasbro overlords will let them cut off a potential moneymaker

The One Ring should've had the damage portion be an emblem. Then it would've been fine. Now you can just replace the effect and that's ridiculous. Having a Chandra style emblem ticking would be a pretty harsh drawback for most decks. Every time you tap the card, you'd get one +1 dmg emblem.

I think banning Amped Raptor (after The One Ring) was the sensible choice here, and leaves a chance that the Boros Energy deck will still be in the meta... possibly 1.5 tier? If they had banned Phlage, it may have completely destroyed the deck, obliterating it from the meta altogether

While I'm super happy that Modern (along with a few other formats) seem to be heading in a more healthy direction, I still can't shake the feeling that either something worse will come in MH4, or that a lot of the bans/unbans were motivated by greed/trying to spur up attention for Modern and other formats. I could totally be wrong, but given WotC's track record the last few years, I still am feeling a little iffy.

@@hpoz222 that's where I've been at. I've been on a break from MTG, saw the announcement for Foundations and a few of the cards in it, but that doesn't make up for the fact next year less than half of all MTG sets will be original, non-crossover sets.

The WOTC today is not the WOTC of ten years ago. They will harm the game for profit EVERY TIME. They are such a driving force in hasbro's bottom line that we will never return to a "healthy" game like we had since 1993. They are the embodiment of greed. I commend them for banning TOR but scheduled ban announcements are still absolutely senseless. If a card is a problem, throw it out the window instead of setting some arbitrary timeline for when it's allowed to do so.

I think it starts to make more sense once you realize that magic is controlled by accountants and not players. They're making all mtg decisions based on profits. It's immediately obvious to anyone who plays magic a card like the one ring is a problem, they let it fester in competitive play to push product. Now that the product has been sold, they made the calculated decision to ban it after just enough time in competitive play. They ban it immediately, they make no money. Ban it too soon, player backlash is too high, ban it a year and a half after release - now we're taking.

Terrible idea. If you ban on a schedule, then event seasons can be worked around those bannings. If bannings just fall out of the sky whenever, then you end up with card pools that change just before (or during) events. Be happy enough that the bannings happen more than once a year.

Not really, just basic supply/demand. Supply of one rings just got massively increased, and thus the market is readjusting. Frankly, I think you will see it go back to at least $80 when the dust settles, since MANY commander players can get their hands on them now and could not for a while.

FWIW, Prof is actually wrong about Green Sun's Zenith re: Yawgmoth combo; while it does not fetch you the eponymous card, it does fetch you the majority of the key creatures for the main engine (e.g. Dryad Arbor, Wall of Roots, Delighted Halfling, Young Wolf, and Strangleroot Geist), all of which serve to accelerate the deck and present a winning board state on T3 more consistently.

Honesty there is a card could deal with the powerful modern horizon sets but every deck would go from 60 to 56 because it bets counter is iteself. Mental Misstep is prolly the most powerful counter spell ever printed and if it was allowed off the banlist it wpuld make the one ring look like a fun build around. I doubt they will ever do it but it would be fun to see

Lantern Control is a very difficult deck to pilot tho, and despite being quite the broken card, Mox Opal dont fit every deck the same way The One Ring did. I think MO has the potential to break the format, but in a new, different deck thats not Affinity nor Lantern.

If/when Wizards decides to print an in-universe version of The One Ring as the selling point of a future set, they need to give it shroud so the life loss is actually a negative consequence and it can't be bounced, sacrificed, untapped multiple times, etc. Even the new version would need banned or restricted in all other formats beyond commander. On a positive note, the twins have finally been released from timeout! Hopefully they learned their lesson and will behave this time.

Two problems with giving the UW One Ring shroud: 1. Universes Within cards have to be mechanically identical to their UB counterparts 2. Shroud doesn't get around the Legendary rule.

@Bubben246 I understand that an exact in-universe version would have to be mechanically identical but with in-universe names. WoTC is all about power creep and printing expensive chase cards, so I would not be surprised if they made a similar card to The One Ring as the selling point for a future set. Having the card be banned or restricted in non-singleton formats eliminates the need for the legend rule since a maximum of one copy is allowed in a deck. Shroud would prevent the legend rule in nearly all circumstances since it would be incredibly difficult to make a token copy of.

Honestly, and this is just my thoughts, I think apart from Twin, probably having a new version of the deck. I could maybe see it as a 1-2x split between the main and side of some value or decks with some good enter and leave abilities. I'd include tap but that's probably not as important. Be glad Fury and Grief are banned as Scam would have probably included a copy.

Opal is the most likely card to see the ban hammer in the future. Nothing about modern has changed enough to cure the issues that caused Opal to be banned in the first place.

Yeah, it's the most likely to get banned. But I think it will be fine. More artifact hate has been added, and more zero mana cost hate has been added. The removal of the ring and the addition of opal has me thinking about adding chalice back to my sideboard. Works for zero and one drops, it might be chalice of the void time again.

I was so worried they would let this thing keep lingering because my friends would tell me "it's not that prevalent" right but it plays like shit, repetitive as shit, boring as shit, makes decks more homogeneous, and places burdens on your semi casual fnm opponents to constantly verify all cards meet the restrictions.

If The One Ring has taught me anything it's that we might benefit from a new super-type, Mythical, that acts as a format-agnostic way to symbolise that you can have only one copy of the card in your deck. It's not the only flaw in the design for that specific card but it would have stopped people from just freely removing the downside of their current ring simply by playing another. I don't really play Modern anymore, which sucks as it once was my favourite format, but I'm glad that if I do start playing it again that this egregious PoS card isn't legal in it.
