My daughter and I met Charles Martinet at a comicon. He was signing autographs. Depending on which character portrait you bought, he would sign it as the character while doing their voices. My daughter got a portrait with Martinet at the center surrounded by Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi; and he did them all (signatures and voices). He called my daughter Princess (insert name here) while talking like Mario. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. He seemed like a down to Earth kind of guy.

Definitely agree with the first sentence of your comment. Heck, even AntDude pointed out in his Mario Sports video that Mario's voice from "Mario Tennis Aces" sounds like a clip from ten years ago, so it's not like this is a foreign concept to Nintendo fans. Honestly, this supposed "new voice" didn't even register to me. Sounds like they've decided to finally have Martinet record some new material as the portly Italian plumber, instead of just reusing clips from two decades ago. I personally think Arlo is making a big deal over nothing. Just because the voice sounds slightly different, so slight that it's not really noticeable, doesn't mean it's not Martinet. People's voices change with age. Hell, take a listen to Julie Kavner, voice of Marge Simpson, as an example! Simpsons fans have been bitching for several years that Marge's voice has been getting deeper and raspier and that it "sounds horrible" or "sounds like shit". But, like Martinet, Kavner has been voicing the same four characters the majority of her career and eventually that takes a total on your vocal chords. Perhaps Martinet has lucked out, and Nintendo found a way to artificially pitch up his voice a big so he can keep voicing Mario and Luigi, whereas The Simpsons Crew hasn't done that for Kavner. _Their_ solution being "Oh just don't write as many episodes with more than one or two of the Bouvier ladies in it at most."

I think that it's an artistic choice, and they had Charles deliver the lines in a different way than normal. I think it really adds a lot to the feel of the new game, it's new it's bold it's weird and it's a new direction in the series, and the different voice really fits in nicely. I don't think Nintendo would go through the whole audition process just for that though, and surely we would hear about an audition, so I think Nintendo just had Charles say the line a bit different.

Everything about this game implies that it's taking place within a dream, like Super Mario Bros. 2 did. So having the lines delivered differently or processed with heavy effects absolutely makes sense with that in mind.

People often forget that when it comes to Mario, they hardly ever record new vocals and dialogue for the characters. Often what we hear is audio that was reused from late 2000’s games. You can tell when it comes to Peach, they more often than not reuse Jen Taylor’s vocals for her “MARIO!” and “HELP ME!”. It’s even the same with Bowser, for a while they just reused the same stock roar he had in the N64 era, particularly in DS games. So getting to hear new vocals for Mario certainly is a breath of fresh air.

@@sanachanto i kind of wondered this possibility after what happened with the last Sonic game released. the 2nd Sonic movie had come out featuring Knuckles voiced by Idris Elba. Sonic Frontiers was still coming up and they had a special animated short that took place before the game that featured Knuckles. Knuckles suddenly had a VERY different voice from then on after being voiced by Travis Willingham for a rather long time by this point. and to put THAT in to perspective, when the full recast was done for all the Sonic characters back in the day, they have all been the same VAs since then. and to my knowledge they are the same now. EXCEPT for just Knuckles suddenly.🤔 the new VA sounds like he is doing an offshoot of Idris' performance. Knuckles also suddenly feels like how his character used to be, which happens to be how he was portrayed in the movie as well. its only a theory, but i wouldnt be surprised if this was all influenced by the movie. it could also all just be coincidence, but thats a LOT of coincidences.

I think he's still around and if he wasn't then I'm sure they'd have some sort of send off of like "thank you so much Charles for the work you've done in creating such memorable voice over decades." I think the finitude of Charles Martinet voicing Mario and the subtle reminder that all good comes to an end, is what makes this so sad. Even the things we grew up with, the things that bring us so much joy and happiness and distract us from our mortality have an expiry date too. Even when we bury our heads deep into our interests and hobbies we are reminded of our temporary existence. @@LordLemmysLabs Now that you mention it, Wario's voice IS different in the Japanese Direct and sounds even LESS like Wario, so I'm thinking it IS just the narrator. Either that, or they're removing Martinet in favour of giving each language their own voice actors, thereby allowing them to have more voice acting down the road (something Wonder seems to be leaning into) though I'm going to assume it's the Narrator thing. Mario doesn't sound AS off to me as the Wario voice did, so you've moved me to "unconvinced" on this rumour.

I've seen some say (and thought myself, on first viewing) that that Wario "Excellent!" was the narrator for the direct doing a Wario impression, not how Wario sounds in Move It.

I honestly think it was the narrator, there was a pause in-between sentences

Apparently the Japanese direct didn’t have the “excellent!”.

I never considered this, but yeah, that sounds exactly like the narrator.

@@SquirrelMario It does, but it's seemingly done by Wario's Japanese voice actor (Wario got a dedicated Japanese voice for WarioWare Gold since it had full voice acting and it stuck around for Get it Together)

I’d like to think that this is another chapter of Charles’ voice cues for Mario. I remember when Mario Galaxy 2 came out and his voice lines sounded pretty different in pitch initially and I thought the same thing. I could also see the possibility of it being a combination of Charles and AI Generated voice. That’d be a cheap move but possible.

If they did use A.I. then that might imply that Martinet may have other obligations or that something is wrong with his health. Also, It isn't very common for Japanese devs or tv show makers to just up and replace voice actors from their series from what I've seen, and it is more of a "Western" thing, only ones I can think of are Metal Gear under Kojima Productions (and even before Kojima Productions was formed) and Sonic under Sega, and also Resident Evil. I posted another comment that goes into more detail on those voice actor replacements.

@@chocov1233to be fair. The Sonic voice changes are all SEGA of America. The Japanese cast is the same as Adventure 1 besides Eggman because his Va passed away

I think it might sound different because it is different lines then normal. If it is a new person and Charles is retiring, I wish him a happy retirement. You help bring happiness to so many people. Myself included.
