In this video, we dive deep into the one force that's constantly working against your game development goals - YOU!
...or more specifically, your resistance.
From the subtle procrastination to the obvious whiny inner voice, resistance takes many forms.
Join us as we explore how perfectionism, marketing, and even starting game development can be manifestations of this relentless foe.
Discover why resistance is a universal struggle and how our brains are wired to resist change.
The good news? While resistance never truly disappears, understanding and recognizing it is the key to overcoming it.
Learn how to silence that inner resistance and make real progress towards your game development dreams. Don't let resistance be the reason your game remains unfinished.
If you're new to our channel, we're Brandon & Nikki from Sasquatch B Studios. We sold our house to start our game studio, and work full time on building our business and making our games, Veil of Maia & Samurado.

I really got memories of Proko and Marshall talking about the war of art, really an inspiring podcast. I think its also valuable to evaluate the difference between resistance and burnout. Sometimes, well I've got the feeling of: "Don't want to work right now" but not because I'm procrastinating but because idk, week has been hard, or I've burned all my brain into working previous week, and really making progress in that sense is jut disconnecting you brain, take a break and care about yourself.

I agree. Bottom line as you mentioned and I've found out myself numerous times, fear never goes away. Inner demons are a constant, it never gets easier, but it's choice that dictates that the inner demons win or you do.

For me it got easier, knowing that it's always there, why it's there, and what to do to overcome it. I just DO IT.

@@TricoliciSerghei Agreed. I used to be obese with a bad way of mindlessly eating and consuming content. Now I force myself to stick with my better habits of working out on the treadmill each day with my tablet, eating cooked meals on most days that I premake and freeze for future, and work on my goals of game dev and learning Spanish each day with consistency of some kind, using the weekend to do the most for my hobbies when I have free time, but not limiting the weekend as the "only time I have free time".

True, perfectionism is one of the most limiting behaviors I've encountered in myself in general. Depending on the context - It's just another form of procrastination.

I know this feeling all too well at the moment. Working on my first game, both code and assets, and I'm stuck in a rut of getting myself to complete some pixel art. I think I should play this video on the weekend again to help get myself in gear.

Keep going forward. You're doing awesome. It's hard with inner demons, but as long as you're consistent; every time you work on it it's one inch closer to being done. Working on it a little each day will help with completing it if you aren't limited to just the weekend.

This doesn't just apply to game development, procrastination just pops it's nasty ass up everywhere in life where we need to be productive. I've been personally affected by this resistance when it came to my schoolwork and am still working my way out of it and just trying to build better habits.

This is a great reminder - the worst resistances are the ones against doing things that remind you of your own perceived inadequacies. Looking at them as just zaps from your primitive fight or flight system rather than imbuing them with all sorts of meaning 'defangs' them to a. large degree. So they may not be FUN (though possibly you can try to inject them with that) but they are at least not debilitatingly depressing or terrifying...

75% of games released on Steam make less than 1k. Only top 3% make over 1 million. So, if I make 1 game every 6 months and release it on Steam, I'll make $1+ million in roughly 45 years on average.

One of those things that stops me from working on my game is watching wise videos all day. Several years ago it was easier to handle that, but now YT is flooded with all kind of helpful videos about everything, but very time-consuming as well. So, will need to stop or heavily limit watching videos, otherwise I'll never finish my game. 🤔

What you could do that I do sometimes is download the videos as audio files and have them as a backlog podcast list so you can listen to them on background while doing your tasks, chores, ECT instead of eyes glued to screen. I download the videos as MP3 sometimes with free sites that you can feed the link to.

@@personalgamedevyt9830 Yes, but I watch/listen videos only when I'm at home and just put the videos on the 2nd monitor. This works well when I am doing routine work, but when the work requires more concentration, such as calculations, doing new things or learning from videos, then even music can distract me and affect the accuracy and speed of the work/learning.

I think my resistance is more like "i dont want to make a game" like yeah i love games but the thing im trying to make probably shouldn't be a game in the first place... everything that i want to make gets shoved away by things that need to be made in order for the game to be a game in the first place. I'm just so lost on what it is that i should be doing.

The thing I like to do in order to do the things I don't want to do is think about how I will FEEL after doing the thing. For example, if I think about how easy it will be to cook in a clean kitchen and how relieved I will FEEL about that, then I am able to do the dishes with less resistance. This thought pattern used to take a bit of effort, but now it's automatic since I re-frame everything like this in my mind all the time. Also, I do tasks in pockets of time where I actually have the energy. If I have the time to do something, but my brain and body wouldn't even be willing to play a game or watch TV or do something else enjoyable right now, then I rest. If I have the time but notice that I would rather do something more fun than the thing I have to do, then I start thinking about how good it will feel to have fun after I get the thing I have to do done. One more trap I try not to fall into is not rewarding myself after I accomplish the things I didn't want to do. If I go too long promising myself I'll get to play a game or go out after I finish X Y and Z, and I never make time to get the reward, then I stop trusting myself that doing things I don't want to do will be worth it. Side note: the answer to which branch of math should I start with is always Algebra 😂 That's literally what everything else is built upon in math.

Some advice I would give anyone who wants to rework their art or add new features or add new levels, etc. If it's absolutely needed? Ok do it. Otherwise write it down and say "this will be good for the sequel" and leave it there.

Actually, keeping my project and code structured, organized, maintainable and generic is the hardest part... Got that problem with my systems for the game. I don't want to re-invent the wheel and try to do things like "in real games", i.e. how my character movement connects to the camera and weapon system and what type of Character Controller (Kinematic, RB) I want to use. I'm also trying to come up with a state machine that fits my needs but nothing worked so far. Trying hierarchical FSM next, to keep everything a bit more organized.
