Bit concerned about the pop-psychology here. The implication is that of you can't put all the stress aside then you won't finish or enjoy the process. I'm married to a therapist (lucky me) and the more common advice is to sit with bad feelings and work on them - ask why you're feeling that way, ask why the stress is there. Tell yourself it's ok to feel stressed and then find support. That's very different to "just think different" and putting that's text up like some famous quote is potentially damaging. If you push everything aside all the time to do your 100% each day then you will crash. Sitting with and working on negative feelings is hard but it's vital to keep going.

Firstly I wanna say I really enjoy this channel. I've been watching it since it was a lot smaller, and these videos help me get through my week as a gamedev. So much of how this channel talks about Mindset and self esteem has really given me my old drive back. I so agree with this video. Mindset is such a powerful thing. Story time, So yesterday I had nothing but freetime so I went to town and put 14 hours into my game after a long creative block. Towards the end of my run I forgot to save an hour and a half worth the work and the project crashed. I got so upset because it deleted an entirely new system with animations I had just added. It put me in a bad mood and I lied in bed for about 20 minutes ready to call it quits. But MINDSET dude, like, I told myself I had done it once, I could implement it again, this time without all the extra time it took to figure it out. Hit an energy drink, sat back at my computer, turned on some music and I reincorporated the system in 20 minutes, added a new dialogue system and ultimately ended yesterday with a MUCH more polished product than I woke up with. Was so happy.

"You can be vain when you're talking to yourself about yourself, it's totally fine." HA! Take that, guilt monsters! Man, I can relate to hating high school. I was very nearly suicidal during a fair portion of it. I came very close to ending my life. For me it wasn't school itself, it was the social environment. It seemed to me that the world didn't want me, and I didn't want the world, there was no way I was going to ever get anywhere worth getting in the world of people. At one point it became clear to me from how intense and inescapable-seeming my awful feelings were, that my life literally depended on forcing myself to think more positive thoughts: "If I can't climb out of this deep dark hole I've fallen down into.. I'm going to die." I had to say to myself, very definitely, sometimes out loud, concerning various thoughts that I kept having, "NO, that's NOT true. Here is the truth: [Something a bit more positive and hopeful.]" I didn't try to make myself think really positive thoughts that I couldn't believe, I just called out the more extreme of the really negative lies I was telling myself for the damnable lies they were, and forced myself to sort of "face" and recognize the positive and hopeful implications of the reality that those were in fact most assuredly false, or at least very misleading statements. Once I realized I actually was thinking lies.. a very dim, very distant light of hope appeared, that I could begin to sort of crawl toward. If you ever find yourself there, keep crawling - when the moment comes where you crawl out of the tube-like cave and rise to your feet in the light of day.. it feels like a miracle. Then you just have to work on putting distance between you and that dark, claustrophobic place. Which you Can do, and. Eventually.. while life always has it's ups and downs, even the worst times are nothing at all like the suffocating, locked, iron-coffin-with-a-mountain-on-top of deadly depression. I hadn't really thought about this, but.. I'm probably believing lesser negative lies about my game development effort in general, and those lies are probably holding me back. If I can identify them, and call them out.. speak positive truths to myself.. I can imagine that actually helping me quite a bit..

This just shows up when I'm starting to make a game. It's a relatively simple 2D "retro" style game and I have a few weeks working on it, but yeah, some times it's a bit overwhelming to think "what I'm doing this for?, will people even like it?". Originally I started it by experimenting with the html canvas, drawing circles and making them orbit each other, now it's taking form and looks like an actual game with a physics engine and everything; this last days I got busy with the job and some other stuff, and I had the thought that maybe I should just give up, that it's not worth it, but I rejected it and continued working on some tasks/bug fixes/features I left unfinished, even if right now I'm not as motivated and with the same energy as the first weeks when I started. I know that software projects generally are long-term, and in the end, only the ones that you invest time into are the ones that succeed... So, thank you for the video, I think this gave me a boost in that I should continue working on this project, even if it's a small one, maybe in the end I make some people have a bit of fun.

So true! I usually get discouraged by how slow progress can be. I like to step back and imagine how things will be 6 months, or a year or two down the road and try to hold onto that perspective. I know I'll be thanking myself later.

I've been saying "take one day at a time" to myself, back when I first started work on my game. I'm not rushing myself to get my project done because while I know that there's a lot of work that needs to get done, I believe in first impressions, and that you only get one chance at that. For me, I just don't want to screw mine up.

In terms of cultivating and actualizing mindset and discipline, I'd recommend listening to people Alex Hormozi, David Goggins, and Jocko Willink. Goggins' metaphor of your mind being like a garage you need to sort through and organize and you can't fit will or discipline in there if you've got so much other clutter is a really powerful reframe. It's about visualizing yourself literally creating a mental shelf space and throwing out anything that isn't useful to you.

Hey guys, I just heard about you from your podcast. This is my first time visiting your KZbin channel. I think you guys are awesome! You keep everything real. You think alot like I do and you're not alone. Try not to take on too much and just focus more on the stuff that's making money. It's OK to try everything, but you have to narrow down what's working and limit yourself to the stuff that's not working out as well. What about making a mobile game with short game sessions, or starting a course on teaching coding. Those channels are invaluable and people need them. I'll tell you a secret for youtube videos. You dont have to put so much into editing videos because people care more about the core content. It's like making a video game. People care more about the gameplay then anything else, not the graphics. That's my 2 cents for now 🙂

Hey, an aspiring game dev of 35 years old from Russia here. Thank you so much for this video and your entire channel! Since I found you somehow here, I've been following vigorously. I voted for you in Unity contest cause you do a very unique and important thing, you talk about not only tech side of game dev, but also about its emotional and psychological toll. You do it all in such a concise, quick to understand and applicable way. And you're really fun to watch and learn from. Thank you, and best of luck to you and your wife! If I may suggest a topic for a future video: could you tell us about some technicalities of making devlogs on YT? Like am I allowed to use soundtracks from games in my videos? Am I allowed to use some letsplayer footage to illustrate my point, etc.? Thank you!

I love how accurate everything is, it feels like my gamedev dad is giving me life advice. I can tell you have been through it But i can't stand that background music, it's so light hearted for something i don't feel is light hearted. Makes all the advice seem like stupid stuff instead of good advice from your own experience and you trying to help us the viewers. I looked at your channel and website and stuff and wish listed your game, i wanted to leave this comment here for feedback.

Awesome video as always dude. I think I have got that wall that’s made it hard to get back to my game. I started my very first game last year, worked on it for about 2 months, and then just got totally frustrated with the coding. I was using the Unity engine, so obviously also using C#. I know it’s not the best language to start on, but coz I’m in my 40’s I don’t have the years to learn lots of different ones. Is there anything you could advise for me to get back on the horse?

It can be difficult to stay motivated while looking at a pile of "to-do" items day after day. 😕
@buttonsoftware496
@buttonsoftware496 Жыл бұрын
When my to-do gets too out of hand, I remove the items that sound even vaguely like "ideas" instead of being core to the game. They go to the ideas list and I also keep a "rejected" list with a reason for rejecting an item so I won't resurrect it again some day. I also have a "this week" list that I use to work towards an update for my game. At the end of the week I reject some of those items if I didn't manage to implement them.

I recently started my switch to Godot from unity.. While some parts are simple and rather efficient, a lot of really simple tasks in 3D are extremely convoluted in this new engine. The documentation is so poor that I ended up downloading an older version of Godot just so I could do some simple things without pulling my hair out.. after a full week, I have realized that when it comes to game dev, it is nice to experiment with engines and languages, but if you are fighting with an engine every day, just use unreal
