Why you should STILL Choose the GH6

It's because the new phase detect ruins image quality. It's why Lumix kept saying they never wanted to add it... but of course they caved to the pressure and added it to the G9II and S5II. The G9II has noticably worse image quality and color than the GH6. The GH6 has the best color science out of any hybrid mirrorless camera on the market today.

The GH6 is slept on for sure. People get mad when I say the GH6 looks better than the original G9 for both photo and video. It's a nice camera. I'd be more likey to get a second GH6 over the G9 II. Thanks for the video Rhett!

I thought I was the only one who noticed that the GH6 exhibits superior color science, especially in Vlog, with that rich, creamy quality. In my opinion, it surpasses even the S5iix, which I also happen to use.

Same! Ive also heard the G9ii color is very similar to the S5ii series more than the GH6. They're all great but if I was able to do a blind test I think most of the time I would prefer the GH6. Even the natural profile just pops!

I almost made a decision to get the s5ii/s1h then found out about the gh6 actually did not pay much attention to it the first video I saw blew my mind because of the rich colors especially paired with prime leica lenses I changed my mind about the s1h so fast am going to get two gh6s for my film making. I have seen pros shoot outstanding work with it aswell the colors are the best on this camera well done panasonic plus the fact that I will be able to record propres 422 internally is amazing :)

For pictures, when you add dehazing to the pictures, every time some really nice tones pop up.

Spot on Rhett. The IQ in my opinion is so much better than the S5II. I’m a little surprised on how much KZbinrs fawn over the new S-series cameras without acknowledging the step-down in image quality.

It could be personal preference but the GH6 is so smooth and organic with detail, noise, and color to me! Its not the cleanest but it really doesnt bother me.

Thanks for sharing such a useful video. I’ve been using the GH series since 2012 and love MFT. I’ve had a GH6 for around 20 months and although I love it in many scenarios, I have a love/hate relationship with the colour science when compared to my GH5S. I use a natural profile on the GH6 but often find it quite ‘cold’ in comparison and so I find I’m often increasing the white balance by 1000-1500 kelvin to compensate to create a warmer image but it’s still not desirable. I’ve researched intensively but not read anyone having this cooler feel, apart from your suggestion in your video. Do you have any advice, or would you mind sharing your settings for your natural profile?

Thanks for this video. I definitely wont be getting a G9ii now. Its those yellow/magenta skin tones that caused me to sell my panasonic gear in the first place....What constitutes good colour is subjective but for me Panasonic still hasn't fixed that yellowy brown cast its always had...

Totally agree! I recently bought a second hand s5 as a b-cam and I'm very disappointed with the colors .... especially with cineD, the Gh6 is so pleasing as you say, for me it is still a beast camera, the only real complain that I have is battery life ....

This was quite nice to see and hear - I agree the GH6 has an awesome image quality - Although I feel its VLOG is not as good as the GH5S VLOGL, I think the CINELIKE D2 and CINELIKE V2 are excellent on GH6.

They have their strenghts and weaknesses. Sometimes the GH6 image does feel like you cant push it quite as far but looks good right out of the gate and has more DR with boost on.

Looks like -4 contrast, -1 highlight, 0 shadows, -1 saturation, +.5 hue, -1 sharpness, -2 NR. Change it up every once in a while though.

I used the G9II, GH6, S5II, S5 etc ... Outside of the weird details rendering (visible when cropping) because of their digital intelligent detail filter, GH6's colors are the best I've ever seen from a Panasonic camera. Skin tones are just perfect, yellows are deep and greens are not oversaturated unlike the G9II. The G9II has very meh skintones, reddish/mangeta, a bit like on the GH5, and some colors are oversaturated, it's hard to get the excact same result than the GH6. Seriously, I'm a bit disappointed by the colors of the G9II, they look like a mix of the GH5, S5II and GH6, they're not bad, slightly better than on the SII but certainly not as good as the GH6. This is a shame because the AF is much better on this new camera, no more out of focus bug, no more pulsing ... Each time Panasonic never manages to make the best camera, and yet they are quite able to do it. This is why I also kept my S5 when I want the best details compared to my S5II which use weird edge sharpening even in V-log.

@@RhettThompsonFilm The S5II is sharper and keeps much better details in low light (of course) than the G9II. But both the first gen S5 and the S1 have finer details than the S5II, the S5II uses more edge sharpening. You need to crop to see the difference though.

I agree! I loved the GH3 for the same reason, it had a pleasing warm look and I think the GH6 has that same feeling. I skipped GH4 and GH5 so not experienced with those but there’s something about the GH6 footage that just looks creamy and nice.

There’s actually a bit of GH5ii footage in this video and yes that’s still a great camera! Super slept on from day one! Of course another GH5ii would match better but you can certainly get a similar look with small changes

I had trouble matching the GH5ii and GH6 when I had both. The VLOG-L on the GH5II was nice, but the contrast and greens were pretty different than the GH6. I ended up selling it on for a second GH6.

@@murph6547gh5ii is tremendous and produces terrific colors. You might have trouble matching to the S5 but it’s certainly doable with some work. I wanted to streamline my footage so I swapped my gh5ii for another gh6 which matches great with the S5II

these are some nice colors indeed! i am very interested in the whole Lumix MFT Series though i am not convinced by the lens lineup (panasonic and third parties alike!). coming from sony i am just very spoiled with a wide selection of incredible zoom- and prime lenses! and i am not even talking about the G Master lenses, no no no... i am having a hard time finding a good ranking of the most versatile / best bang for the buck lenses for MFT. does anyone have some suggestions? which ones have smooth and reliable manual focus control? i am specifically looking for good all around zoom (like the sigma 18-35 but wider!) and bright wideangle lenses (10-14mm). would be happy to learn about some lenses that would pair well with this beautiful camera! *btw i am mostly shooting small productions for dancers and musicians. i am looking for a versatile handheld rig.

@@RhettThompsonFilm s5ii - go to menu - the gear icon - pg1 - awb lock settings. you can set an awb lock to an fn button. its super helpful as far as using awb goes because obviously you can lock it from changing while recording. just wondering if thats on the g9ii - not sure if you own one or not.

Gh5 had green? I own a gh5 never noticed any green. I always thought it had too much red. Actually i put down the red curve in edit to make it MORE green and less red. Your video here to memlooks too yellow and too red at the same time😅

I have all 3 cameras and the image quality is exactly the same if you use the same settings and lenses. I also tested all 3 cameras with the Blackmagic video assist and here again everything is the same. So what exactly are you referring to? The GH5 and GH5s? The newer camera is better than its predecessors, what a surprise. And why even compare a Full Frame S5 with a Sony Sensor.
