Hassan was really stupid to openly and arrogantly admit to the murder. He should have kept quiet. Little did he know Colombo was setting him up as part of his trap to catch him out and get a signed confession out of him. What made it worse for Hassan, the King of Suari, was hiding and heard everything and warned Hassan if he backed out of his confession, he will be shipped back to Suwari to face the death penalty. Hassan couldn't wiggle out of this one. Diplomatic immunity was now out the window.

I come back to this clip so many times because it's one of the most fitting ends. The entire episode this character espouses that the old ways of his country are good, they shouldn't be changed, they need to be respected, in opposition to the king who wishes to change the system for the better. Yet when this man is faced with being on the receiving end of the system he so proudly supports, suddenly it isn't justice, it's barbarism. He was already caught, he was going to be punished either way, yet he chose the justice of a foreign land over his own and that speaks volumes.
@brachiator14 жыл бұрын
Wonderful scenes. You immediately get a sense that the young king is a man of character and it pays off in the end. The little details of courtesies and handshakes is fascinating. And then there is the acting. Columbo really carries off the ruse that he is smart but has been defeated even though he has everything under control. And Hector Elizondo is superb. He does not overplay the villainy or the crushing defeat. In the best episodes of the series, the villain is always a worthy adversary.

The "Embassy office" and desk was Harold Lloyd's. The estate mansion was left furnished and with most of his books and furnishings after his death in 1971. The executors couldn't get the money and Beverly Hills City's permission to preserve it all as a Museum of Film History as his will dictated. The Estate was sold for a low price afterward. In 2021, only the Mansion and a few acres are still there, and I believe the interior was modernized by subsequent owners. When Peter Falk is sitting at grand iron gates outside, those were Mr. Lloyd's gates, as was the sweeping long driveway (now gone).

Most Columbo villains tend to be charismatic charmers or just pompous arrogant snobs but Hector Elizondo's Hassan Salah is not your typical antagonist and is a performance you can truly appreciate after multiple viewings. At first he gives off a cold, stoic, calculating and emotionless vibe as well as a feeling of religious devotion to his country's customs. The accent's subtlety accentuates this perfectly. As the episode progresses and Columbo's antics start to get to him, his stoicism begins to fade but the final scene was the best. That's when Hector Elizondo drops the mask and you can actually see his genuine emotion and charisma take over the character as his perceived victory approaches. He is truly enjoying Columbo admitting defeat and begging for his job only to revert back to the default demeanor when he realizes he's been tricked. Great Stuff, truly great stuff.

It just shows how much of a genius that Columbo really is. He pretends to be a simpleton, meanwhile twisting and trapping the bad person in the episode. Like the one with the Commodore how he already had ballistics test the gun and put it back on display, or this one, talking with the King on the side and setting up his confession. Either way Sallah was going to be served justice. Boy he is amazing. He always takes his ideas and that are really simple like, "why is there no water in the fountain?" etc. He also has an intimate relationship with the boys down at the lab. haha. I continue to watch him over and over. Pure genius.

i feel like that compassion is what actually got him to face prison in eeuu instead. you see, the king was already there and was already up to date with everything, columbo entering the embassy was just a play, if columbo wasnt there, then he would have simply been arrested by the king with nobody to say anything for him. the fact that he allowed columbo to apologize saved him
