Fascinating to see this perspective. I had a whinge at the state of the canals and towpaths last year, but I didn't realise how much was just done by volunteers rather than paid for. Really needs a younger crowd of volunteers too!

Fantastic! The volunteering looks so much fun and a great way to give back. Its such a pity my local canal the Welland Navigation has long gone. I remember standing on the bridge over the river nene at orton staunch (orton mere) in Peterborough as a kid and watching the lock gate open and close 😁

Good on you Heidi. Hell I’m not even on the canals, I’m not even in the UK and still I comment on the condition of some of the canals. I have had holidays on them so understand some the problems, but really you shouldn’t complain if you don’t do your bit to keep them clean and clear. Gutsy leaving a pirate in charge of a CRT boat, you may have stolen it. LOL. Those weeds are what I comment on most often, having to get into those hatches in that cold water to get the weeds out. There are 2 gentleman volunteers who are putting in perennial flower beds on the bike trail I ride. They work year around. Use hand tools. The beds are beautiful. I carry limb cutters for branches on the trail.We all need to make our environments better for all.😊

Well done chopping down trees, bet you feel so satisfied that you've helped. That rum sounds yummy, have you tried Sheepdog Peanut Whiskey? I found it last year, and it's delicious and smooth. The canals are only 5 foot deep 😂😂 i only wore it as it was a requirement to volunteer ..I never wear mine except in rivers as I single hand and they get caught on everything … they inflate when you hit the water
