I got one of these ( Seabeast AF90) due to your recommendation, and I absolutely love it. It fit's well....5 people have borrowed it, and it fits without leaking. It never mist or fogs. I have read about not using these masks for extended periods, and I suppose I can see how people could feel so relaxed snorkelling in it, they may spend very long times snorkelling, hence the problems.

I’m on holiday in Mexico and, having snorkeled in the sea for the first time and talked to another vacationer who raves about a full face mask he bought cheaply on eBay, I had to do my own research. I’m now appropriately cautious and leaning more towards a good traditional snorkel set for now at least. I’ve learned so much from watching your channel Mr GivesAMinute, but having learned what I needed to I’ve watched so many of your other videos not only because they are informative but because you have such an entertaining style and the videos themselves are very well produced. Moisture evaporating from your eyes will always cause fogging on the mask, even if you eliminate the primary source of moisture which causes fog (from mouth and nose). Even with an anti-fog coating on the lens (probably similar to that used in my motorcycle helmet), there may always be some small amount of fogging in any diving mask. I still use and old barrel shaped mask and spit in the mask lens which has been working fairly well for over 30 years now. Old School. It's not foolproof against fog but it diminished it enough to be practical. Thanks for the Great video!
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Darivs :) I appreciate you jumping in here with this advice! And cheers for the nice words!
@DARIVSARCHITECTVS6 жыл бұрын
Your video got me interested in these new snorkeling masks, and I am not looking to buy one that works well. One with both a rubber nose for equalization AND an anti-fog coating would be ideal. The old round, barrel shaped mask from the days of Cousteau served me well. Because it encompassed my nose, I would leave a small amount of water in the bottom of it. When my mask fogged, I could tip my head forward and let that water wash the lens free of fog. You can't do that with a sport mask that has a nose piece, and I didn't miss the lack of peripheral vision.
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
I really love how the tech has constantly evolved and new products are coming to market. Of course there are teething issues with everything, but if you can adapt and make things work for your needs and everything moves forward we are heading in the right direction I feel :)
@DARIVSARCHITECTVS6 жыл бұрын
I'm shopping for a mask, but the reviews never rarely compare features between masks: Anti-fog coating on lens, use of silicone instead of plastic/rubber for comfort/longevity, seal leaks potential, vision distortion, lens quality of material (polycarbonate vs plastic), does the snorkel float get stuck or leak by, range of peripheral vision, range of vision up/down, ability to expel water out the chin valve, etc. I plan on working this mask hard with dives up to 7m down, and though I never have an issue with ear equalization using jaw muscles, a rubber nose piece for forced equalization may be a desirable option if the rest of the mask actually works well. It would be nice to see chart comparing all these features. Price is low priority. It has to WORK.

what these face masks need is to separate the mouth and nose, and allow the nose area to vent to water. This way you can avoid co2 buildup by breathing in with mouth, out with nose

I've had zero fog for two seasons with my Decthlon/Subea mask, then last September, fog almost constantly. Why? Bad weather, air humidity was 90+% most days. When the air going in is saturated the fog can not go away.

Interesting, I wonder how that affects those people using and living in places with maximum humidity.

There is a thin chemical layer on the glass from the manufacturing process. If it is tempered glass you can take a lighter and hold it just above the glass on the side of the glass pressed against your face (ensuring not to burn the skirt, so go in short bursts) you will immediately see the layer come off, take a microfiber cloth and scrub hard to get excess residue off from edge of skirt, let the glass cool down and blow into it, if there is fog repeat process. If you have a polycarbon mask or anything other than tempered glass you need to use toothpaste (small amount) and scrub it on the inside of the mask the toothpaste acts as a tiny micro abrasion and then rinse and blow in mask and repeat, note you will have to repeat this process many times the tempered glass is usually once or twice but the toothpaste may take a while.
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
This is the method I've been told to use also. I encourage everyone to try it. Thanks Rob.

Hi mate i purchased one of these so when fully submerged underwater am i ment to breath out or breath in i tested it at home in the spa and i fully submerged and breathed in and it instantly felt like i was chocking so thoughy id send u msg and ask u how u use it diving down under water or what i was doing wrong. Hope u can answer my question please
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, when you are submerged underwater you are not meant to breathe in or out. A lot of people are confused by this, but none of the full faced snorkel masks on the market are designed to enable you to breathe underwater. You need SCUBA gear to do that. These masks simply provide a better viewing experience under water.
@Grimreapervlogs6 жыл бұрын
@@GivesAMinute thanks for the super fast reply mate. Ohh got u so basically like in your videos if u go underwater u are ment to just hold your breath and say only be dive under for maybe a really quick amount of time i seen in your video that u dive under with it on and swim. So u just are holding your breath while underwater and not breathing in or out is that correct mate. Ive watched afew videos and ppl are diving under with full face masks on and u see bubbles coming out of the bit that the air comes through is that because they are breathing out while under with it on. Sorry for the silly question
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's correct man, you just hold your breath as you dive. I actually exhale as I dive (to reduce buoyancy) and as I am only going under a few meters at max there are no issues. The air bubbles you see are most likely the trapped air inside the mask escaping. :)
@Grimreapervlogs6 жыл бұрын
@@GivesAMinute yeah i dont want to dive very deep at all with it just maybe go under a meter or 2 at most for a real short time period so was very curious to know how u do that. I havent had a chance to test it properly yet and when i did test it on the spa and went under and breathed in that feeling of chocking soon made me come back up so quick hahah. Im going to thailand next month and i am planing on taking it with me to try out on some island tours. So if i do dive under are u saying i should take a big breath before diving under then once im fully sumberged i should exhale out a little bit sorry for the confusion so this wouldnt causd that ball that seals it to prevent any water getting in exhaling wont cause that to break that seal im such a noob with this so all the help u give me is very appreciated mate
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Thats somewhat correct: the only time the ball will seal in the top is when you go underwater. It's to even you breathing in that will cause it, it's the floating of the ball to the top of the snorkel which cause it to lock. If you breathe in at that point the mask will contract onto your face. You do not want to breathe in while underwater wearing these masks for that exact reason. Have fun in Thailand man!!

with masks in general they all come with a coating from the manufacture to prevent damage to the lens, this is what causes the fogging, you must remove this by either scrubbing with tooth paste or burning it of with a mini blow torch. this then should not fog up as long as you spit in it before swimming.

That anti-fog coating can wash off.. But they don't come off easily. Just make sure nothing touches the inside of the glass especially when wet and it won't come off.. I had to learn this the hard way before. I didn't know those anti-fog coating could come off nor did I ever use anti-fog coated goggles, so I touched the inside of the goggles. It was like when you're removing sticker residue. You can try buffing toothpaste on a mask without anti-fog coating..

I saw on other videos some people are complaining from the CO2 build up and they think it could be dangerous if you stayed longer periods in the water?

One question, when you remove the mask can you instantly wear it again after you let the c02 exit for 30 minutes? (I assume after the co2 escapes by removing the mask you can wear it again) thanks!!
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Sure thing mate, you don't need to wait 30 minutes for CO2 to "exit". If you lift the mask up your face you can just as quickly and easily slide it back down again and continue snorkelling :)

I have a full face snorkel mask but had trouble going under the water & breathing. Is there a trick to it or is it not possible
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich. You cannot breathe underwater with these full face snorkel masks, it's not possible.
@nygchamps076 жыл бұрын
GivesAMinute thank you, so when u go under with the tip of the mask underwater you're just holding your breath
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is correct :) The snorkel will "lock" the water out - the ball floats to the top and stops any water entering :)

There's a video on KZbin about that this mask only has two channels that the air exits through and it is therefor dangerous to breathe underwater with. Do you feel that way or not?

The link to the US amazon product isn't working currently... Would the carbon dioxide issue be solved simply by taking a break every 15 minutes or so (easier when snorkeling off-shore obviously)? Or is it that you are breathing the expelled air the entire time and taking a break and removing the mask really wouldn't help...?
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
I'm looking into the Amazon link Trixie... thanks for bringing it to my attention. And yes, absolutely!! Taking a break even 15 minutes is highly recommended to relieve any of the carbon dioxide build up issues! Great thinking!! :)

Hi Benon. I have been looking into snorkeling gear after my wife draggged me into the water on our Fiji trip this year. This was a big step for me because Im disabled "quadriplegic" who cant swing to save my life. But hell I loved it and want to do it again. Even if I almost drank the ocean and float head down and legs up. Other than that issue I find it hard to get a mask to fit because I have a big nose. Do you have any recommendations for a mask for people with big noses? Or a way to keep upright? Thanks for taking the time and love the vids. Cheers Jas
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jas. That's an interesting question. I feel like most of the full face masks are suitable for people with larger noses. I for one have a massive head and all the masks I have reviewed have fit quite well (not saying a large head equals a large nose, but you follow what I'm getting at!) As for keeping upright I guess being a quadriplegic you would have someone with you while snorkelling? If so, I would suggest some floatation device that you can wear while they watch. You can move the angle and position of the devices depending on how much "rotation" you are getting in the water? I feel like with a mate supervising you should be good to go? Incidentally, it's rad to see someone like yourself who has extra struggles in life making the most of it and getting into the water mate!! I'm truly appreciative of you stopping by the channel and I hope others who may be thinking of trying snorkelling for the first time can be inspired by you. Thank you!!

Hi GivesAMinute, thanks for uploading these videos. They are helpful. I am getting into snorkeling and I wanted to ask your expert opinion. Do you prefer the powerbreather over a face mask? Or is there another product that you would recommend? I have also read that face snorkel masks are dangerous, and might be best to use for 30min max. I love snorkeling and I think 30min just seems so short. Look forward to your reply, T

GivesAMinute you’re welcome my friend! I understand the effort & it’s a job well done. Yeah that is a crazy situation. Literally the last few months I’ve been on a extreme caving kick on KZbin. I’m really claustrophobic in those kind of situations so it draws me to those kind of videos even more for some weird reason haha. So seeing this happen, I have some knowledge of at least how narrow in tight some of those passages can be because of watching so many people online and do it for sport! So I can only imagine how tight & sketchy a lot of the passes are. I’m sure alot of those channels that I follow are getting a big push right now of viewers & subs! I just s subbed & I’ll check out what else you review too!

@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Thanks again :) The thing is, all these masks suffer from co2 build up - it's inherit in their design - the key thing to remember when using them is to always have someone supervise you. I did have a bad experience with lose of breath and fatigue while using the Seaview 180: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIarp3mAbN-LpM0 but I wouldn't say this is specific to that particular mask, rather a failure of all these designs...

Great to find you and your wonderful reviews! Living in Hawaii now, and have been looking at the full face masks (at my local Costco, not this brand), but haven't tried them yet. The "Fog Free" subject caught me, and its good to know about the issues with these masks. Wondering if the clarity has continued with use, if you've had time to find out yet. Not being able to pressurize is a likely show stopper for me, with the carbon dioxide issue close on its heels. I just love to dive down frequently and far, and stay out a long time when I finally make it to the water. Will be watching the rest of your videos as soon as time permits. Thanks SO much!

Good review from a serious man! I'm interested in the airflow. The mask I have is like breathing through a tiny straw. That is OK unless I exert myself, then I suffocate. How big is fifty percent bigger? Diameter or cross-sectional area? What is your subjective opinion on the ability to breath freely on this model as compared to the other ones?
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Norman :) Which mask do you have? I have found there to be no real issues with airflow on this one, no more or less than the other masks I have tried. To me, they all suffer the same in that regard - as soon as you start to exert yourself you run the real risk of hyper ventilating (as you pointed out).
@normanwitzler96656 жыл бұрын
I have a NuAge Easy Breathe model. It isn't easy to breathe if you are a large person who decides to swim much faster than a jellyfish. I mostly use it to repair wet lights in swimming pools. It does a good job of not fogging which is important for that kind of work.
@GivesAMinute6 жыл бұрын
