This was really confusing to me as well, but for anyone else who may have been confused, I think I may have figured it out. Look at the overhead shot at the 2:57 mark. The INSIDE of the filter ring is 58mm so that it will fit over ALL the lenses. (Something smaller may not fit and/or could partially obscure any one of these lenses.) But notice the *INSIDE* of this 58mm circle is also slightly *TOO LARGE* and extends beyond the OUTER EDGES of the PHONE. Notice how you can see through the ring, past the phone, and onto the table underneath - slightly in the upper left, and more so on the top edges. (Another example is the sky poking through the top of the phone during the demonstration of the filter ring at the 2:54 mark.) This means that if you're holding the phone up, and there's any light shining from BEHIND you, that non-filtered light may possibly 'leak in' from behind you, REFLECT off the back of the ND filter, and then 'leak' - or bounce-back - onto the front-facing lenses. So you may need to 'square-up' or somehow black out those 'holes' where the 58mm ring goes beyond the edges of the phone to cut any light leaking in from around or behind you. Maybe cut out a round piece of black poster board or felt or something to fit the 82mm ring and then cut out a hole that exactly matches the rounded-square casing of the lenses and then tape that to the back of the ring. I don't know. Sounds kind of janky and I'm not even sure how big a problem this may be. I suppose I may have to spend several hundred dollars to find out! :) Hope this helps. It wasn't obvious to me. But it was a pinned "IMPORTANT NOTE" and I found myself asking questions like... "light leaks?" ... "tape what?" Really hoping we get some feedback if this was a fairly accurate description, if it's really much of a problem, or if any elegant solution has arisen. I might even subscribe. :) But granted... this was a big wall of words. Until then, I've moved everything out of my cart and into a wish list while I consider if I'd rather just use other, more expensive, proprietary solutions as mentioned in the introduction. Thank you for all your hard work. There was a ton of useful information in this video!

I’ve been using my iPhone professionally for over a year on a daily basis with customers. Two tips: - A cage protects your phone better. And there’s always a step up ring set that goes from 35mm to 82mm. - Your filter adapter has openings on the back because it sticks outside your phone. That leads to reflection. Light will fall in from behind and reflect against the back of your filter. This is also solved with step up rings. I use Beastgrip products and I’m very happy with it. Price is good.
@THEDPJOURNEY8 ай бұрын
I Did answer in the pinned comment about that gap. I just forgot to mention it in my video, check it out Keep in mind this DIY solution is mainly for people who don’t want to invest in cages with proprietary filters that cost a lot, it’s just an easy and affordable way to use your existing filters and iPhone cover.

I have found the Powrig Magfilter system to be a good alternative as a lens filter mount. It's basically just a plate that magnetically mounts onto the phone and the receiver is just a standard filter screw-on. You would need a case, though. It uses its own magnet to mount, and you wouldn't wanna tape another magnet onto the back of your phone.

For the storage, you might wanna look into (one of these days) using one of those very simple $10 USB-C external m.2 NVME adapter dongles they sell on Amazon. You can even do what I did and open up the housing for the nvme adapter and all you really use/need out of it is the PCB board that has the m.2 connector pins and stuff on it, that's attached to a USBC female port at the end of the board. It'll reduce the size by 50% or more, and you can then get yourself a couple of high-quality thermal heat dissipation pads to overlay on the nvme drive and you could get away with basically sticking the whole thing to the back of a battery bank or some other attachment you're using. This way, I was able to go from using a Samsung T5 or T9 external SSD (not a huge drive or anything) which is like the size of a pack of playing cards, down to something that's barely bigger than the size of a pack of Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

Great explanation and I made already good use of it. I do have one point of attention: one Crucial died on me during a recording after only three days of use. The BM app gave an error message and that was it. I finished the day using internal storage only. Couldn't repair it, despite using professional tools. In the end I was able to recover apx 520Gb of data (using EaseUS and Diskwarrior, both on Mac). My other Crucial worked fine. I have no idea why the SSD stopped working. I used the short flat-cable you described, and also taped the connectors to the iPhone and to the SSD as I use the setup in a dynamic situation involving unicycles (see my shorts). I didn't drop the hardware, didn't hit anything. Crucial didn't have an explanation, but they offered a replacement disk straight away. I will use that, but will also look into a setup using fast SD-cards.

Great DIY solution, despite the possibility of backlight. Sadly, I've not been lucky with the magsafe adapters I've found on Amazon UK. Their magnets are too weak, even using my phone without a case. I'll keep looking, but I've already bought (and returned) two that were not strong enough.
@THEDPJOURNEY Жыл бұрын
Yeah I forgot to mention about the potential backlight actually, but that's easily fixed with tape. Sorry to hear about not finding a strong magnet.

@@THEDPJOURNEY I finally found one that works on Amazon UK. It's called "Encased Magnetic iPhone Mount Compatible with MagSafe" and it was £14 with a Black Friday discount. Super strong magnet. I stuck it with super glue to a 58mm to 72mm step-up ring. I am using it now with the Haida CPL-VND 2-in-1 and it is amazing. Thanks so much!

Is there a next step to adding in a lens maybe like moment anamorphic or something but in a cheap rig way ? Plus the filters ?
@THEDPJOURNEY2 ай бұрын
These lenses are usually proprietary to the manufacturer, they would have proprietary amounts. So I don't think you'll find any DIY solution to add Lenses.

Great video! I'd watched this when it first dropped as I had just bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but was not shooting enough video to worry about filters and external storage. Now, however, I find myself looking for a solution wherein I can mount a VND and a black pro mist filter and the Small Rig cage I was eyeing requires, as you note, proprietary magnetic filters. I was even hoping to use the Moment case I had picked up, but it seems there may not be a solution with Moment wherein I can use the Moment case, then mount only the BPM and VND.

Really enjoyed this video, I’m just getting into this world, and for the moment I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, I know the 15 has a lot more upgrades with regards to photography. But can the same be applied to the 14 with regards to the products? I know the photos and quality won’t be as impressive as the 15. Just wondering if I could apply it to my phone until I upgrade to the next model, most likely a 16. Keep up the awesome content and info, 👍🏼

Great content, really clever stuff! Quick question for everyone - I usually shoot with my Nikon and tether it to my Mac using Lightroom. How can I do something similar but by using my iPhone as my camera? I want to snap photos and see them right away on my Mac. Any tips or tricks? Thanks!

I would say only ssd and some better software and you are good to go. If you want more you use mirrorless. Don’t need to make phone any more bulkier

This was really great. Would love to see a rig that uses a cage and goes all out :) I want to use the DJI Mic Rx, as well as an SSD, Battery and external monitor (I have seen videos where the Atomos Ninja V works, but I also wanted to see if i could use an ipad using the Orion Video app). Trying to see if there is a way to put all that onto the Osmo Mobile 6. This would of course be less of a handheld system. More of a tripod system I think. I am looking for the right USB-C hub right now. USB-C really opens up everything as far as rigging this camera out from stealth to full blown tripod. I wonder if it is possible to 3d print a case that kind of is built for a certain rig, and makes it really easy to connect everything. Glad I found this channel, subscribed and liked!
@THEDPJOURNEY Жыл бұрын
Thank a lot for subscribing! Glad I can help As for the more advanced rigging, I was thinking about it actually after I realized it's hard to shoot low angles without having to lay flat on the ground, I'm still trying to explore options. The Orion thing is good, but yo need an iPad for that, I wish they have a version for iPheon, so you can monitor with another older iPhone for those tricky low angles.

@@THEDPJOURNEY would you have a cage? Most of my ideas start with a cage. I wanted to set up like 4 different rigs, for different scenarios. 1. Minimal 2. Run and Gun 3. Single Operator Tripod 4. Full Set Production

I honestly didnt find a cage that works for my needs yet, since they all have that short clamp. That's why I found the Battery Bank clamp, it's not ideal, but it works pretty well. I might just get a Cage and break off the clamp part or something

82mm is too big a size for a phone. smallrig and Neweer have cages for the Apple Pixel and Samsung phones and use any kind of lens(standard for Apple and Samsung 67mm. if you have bigger or smaller, use adapters. Freewell filters and lenses don't fit with other manufacturers, but smallrig and Neweer cages work with other filters and lenses.
@THEDPJOURNEY9 ай бұрын
You can use whichever adapter you want, 58-67 would potentially work. The question is, do you have 67mm filters already? The reason why I used 82mm, as explained, is to prevent you from buying new filters since 82mm is what most filmmakers own and use for their existing lenses.
@dandobi Жыл бұрын
Amazing. Thanks for this. Question. Will there be any crazy vignetting on the widest lens?
@THEDPJOURNEY Жыл бұрын
Not at all, since that’s an 82mm filter there’s no way to see any of its edges. Not sure about other brands though with 67mm filters.
@dandobi Жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY amazing to hear! I just made the mistake of buying a rig for 49mm threads (I wanted to keep it super small). With 49mm, the widest lens is unusable, way too much vignette from one of the corners. GREAT to hear this system works. Thanks for making this, SUPER helpful! 🙌🏼
