Earthworks icon is my favorite for sure

I use my Diety Vo-7U which in all honesty I prefer to the sm7b. Its usb-c, for 160 instead of 400 its a steal I'd say. They also have sales alot of the time which is how I got mine for 80 bucks at the quality of one around quadruple the price.

I use Elgato wave XLR and a shire sm7b but I don’t use a cloud lifter

Yup! It's 100% not necessary

If either of these great mics are just outside your price range, consider the earthworks SR117 for 200 dollars. You’ll be amazed

It is, it's just so flat and focused on the high end that most would need to know how to use vst's to get the right sound for their voice.

Isn't the RE20 the alternative to the SM7B?
@StreamGearTalk5 ай бұрын
The re20 can be an alternative but it's more expensive. Not by much. I know it's kind of a semantic take, but for the video I took the position of someone wanting to only spend $400
@TheSixthSLoT5 ай бұрын
@@StreamGearTalk Oh. From your experience, would you say that the RE20's extra cost is justifiable when compared to he SM7B? Like, do you think it's a better mic?
@StreamGearTalk5 ай бұрын
The RE20 is an amazing mic. The way it's designed (variable d technology) allows you to get the proximity effect (warmth in tone) without having to eat the mic. I love it's look. It's great. But. There's just something about the sm7b's tone that keeps calling me back to it. If money is not an issue, you can't go wrong either way.

Just get an SM-57 and a A81WS windscreen. It sounds almost identical to an SM7B, for a fraction of the price.

I think the Sm7b is iconic, yes, but we should stop promoting it to other creators. Not because it isn't good, but because it isn't 300 Dollars "better" than some other sub-500 microphone. There are diminishing returns in this price range. The capsule also can be found in much cheaper Shure mics. You are basically paying for the body, the chassis, that gives it that magical warm tone and holds the preset filters for presence boost and bass cut. The SM7B tone however is not something you couldn't emulate with an EQ. The most important job of a microphone is capturing audio as detailed as possible and not to color your voice to "sound beautiful". First and foremost it is about audio replication. The "brush up" happens in the mix, using plugins. So i would argue that any microphone with a high quality capsule, fit to capture your voice details to the fullest, is a good enough base for coloration via plugins. If the source material is good (voice recorded in), then you have all the options you need to make it sit perfectly in your mix. You can compare voice recording with taking a photograph. If you use a good lens, you have a better chance to turn it into a good picture using photo editing software, than you'd have with a picture taken with your tiny smartphone. Zooming in, applying effects, you will notice the lack of detail. SM7B is a good "preset" out of the box, but that shouldn't be what you are after.. seek for quality in sound replication, which can be found in much less expensive microphones, and then find a good software to enhance your voice. You gonna need such software plugins anyway, for simple tasks like limiting and compression. Most likely you will have a EQ on your microphone anyway, even if it is only to remove the lower frequencies to avoid bass rumble on your viewers speakers when you talk... Now imagine how silly you will feel, buying a expensive SM7B for "that sound" only to then later change it with a custom EQ. Half the reason for buying that specific mic goes out the window like that. ;) I had the SM7B multiple times and returned it every time, because that expense is just is very hard to justify when you compare it to other mics. There are of course trash mics to avoid, but midrange is good enough.

He has the Elgato Wave XLR - you don't need a cloudlifter with that.
